They should add the word "life" to the ban list, reason being it may cause those who are spearheading this campaign to feel badly about their lack of one.

@NNoamfer: Nope, March 26, and it`s For Reals. AND it`s not just New York City, it`s ALL ACROSS America! NYC just has more words (ideas) banned than most other places.

Fact Check before you say it`s fake.

this is the problem with free speech and opinion, because now whenever some idiot claims something is bad or wrong we all have to accept it and adjust and we soon start censoring everything that some nut job doesn`t like because EVERYONE`S opinion matters... I`m not saying it`s not great to have such freedom, i just think there should be some sort of IQ test before you earn it

We keep trying to shelter our kids and protect them from things like competition and failure all we are doing is weakening our future and teaching intolerance for differences.

Who cares! The tests are pointless anyways! except for the times when they are not.

What the hell is this world coming to? These words aren`t offensive... Just because some people choose not to believe in dinosaurs, or don`t celebrate birthdays doesn`t mean that they should/would be offended at the sight of the subject. When are people going to realize that you can`t please everyone all the time? If people get offended at something as stupid as this, there is something wrong with them..

This is what you get when you vote Democrat.

"The word `dinosaur` made the hit list because dinosaurs suggest evolution which creationists might not like"

Christians are at it again, undermining science because it disproves their delusion.

Each student will be placed inside a plastic bubble upon entering school property. All teachers will dress as fairy tale tale characters (good ones only) and teach only love, happiness, and good times. All academic subjects will be discontinued as actual learning is stressful to some students...

No `Bieber` allowed @greggas! He still counts as a `celebrity`! lolz!

What you say is true enough @LillianDulci, and I don`t know exactly what sort of test these `guidelines` apply to. I just object to pencil-pushing beurocrats who strive to make the world a dumber place so they can feel smart!

Also: when I SEE a `wolf` (censorship) I bloody well start yelling! Wolf! Wolf! It`s disguised as `guidelines` (sheeps clothing) but look at the teeth, it`s a woooolf!

And if it does affect AP tests or other tests that are supposed to test specific knowledge then there`s no way in hell I support this. But if it`s just for NY`s equivalent of FCAT then I`m fine with it. FCAT was a joke anyway when I took it, but I can understand why they`d want to "ban" some things from being mentioned, because they could make people uncomfortable (giving them a disadvantage) but the tests aren`t supposed to test knowledge on those subjects anyway.

For example, there`s no real reason for why "evolution" has to be mentioned in a test that tests your reading comprehension or your ability to add numbers together, so I`m okay if it`s banned for that.

5Cats, that`s not true at all o_O I took calculus in high school, there`s no calculus on Florida`s standardized test. I don`t recall having any standardized test that tested my history knowledge. I know people who take programming classes in high school, there`s no standardized tests to test those. I was taught tons that had nothing to do with our statewide standardized test.

leesah, I`m under the impression that AP tests don`t fall into this category. I`m thinking it only counts for things like FCAT (I can`t remember the NY equivalent but that`s the Florida version) where it`s testing your general knowledge (basic English reading/writing and basic math for example), not specific knowledge.

@LillianDulci:
The only thing being affected is standardized tests.
Fine, except that if it`s NOT ON the standardizes test, it likely will NOT be taught! Why? Because many district rate their teachers on how well their kids do in those tests. Why waste time discussing `poverty` if you know it won`t be on the test?

It`s not even subtle, it`s outright censorship.

"The only thing being affected is standardized tests. In which case, I`m fine with it."

.....every AP student in the world who now has to take a standardized AP Brit Hist exam without questions concerning "disease, death, plague, violence, weapons, etc etc etc" would like to have a word with you.

My generation are the worst most overprotective parents ever. I don`t understand it. People blaming this on political leanings are just stupid. Both sides of the aisle have their share of incredibly bad hilocopter parents. It`s so bad they had to create a word for it. If you have to call and wake your college student up for classes, guess what, you fail at being a parent. If you think you have to sit in your kids class more than once a year you fail as a parent.

Yeah, it`s just for tests that aren`t issued by individual teachers. So no, science classes and history classes and etc will NOT be affected. The only thing being affected is standardized tests.

"officials are requesting 50 or so words be removed from city-issued tests."

From what I understand, the banned word list is for statewide tests, not like, average classroom tests. In which case, I`m fine with it. Standardized tests need to be fair to everyone. If it does extend to a normal test in a normal classroom, then the list is ridiculous because it prevents teaching certain, very important, topics.

Flashback to "Nineteen Eighty-Four". Winston Smith`s friend worked on the newspeak dictionary, removing words. Without the words, the people cannot form the ideas.

This is why I get outraged by "political correctness". It ALWAYS escalates, every dratting time! It never stops!

"Computers in the home"
"Homes with swimming pools"
"Expensive gifts"
"Hunting"
"Religious Holidays"

"Traumatic Matrial" wtf does that even mean?

It`s really not 50 "words" but 50 broad areas containing hundreds of forbidden words, and ideas.

"Only guidelines" LOLZ! My boss used to give us "guidelines" and if they weren`t followed to the letter? Fired!

While the intentions, might be good, some of these are ridiculous. Rap and "rock and roll"? Dinosaurs will upset creationists? What do they think those big bones in museums are? "bodily functions"? How are they going to teach health? "War"? No history tests either?

They should ban the word math because that indicates science and religious types might find that offensive.

And I was wondering why the school systems were failing.... here`s my sign! LOLOLOLOL
