That`s exactly why I love hockey, and being a lifelong NY Rangers fan I can tell you this always happens when they play either the NJ Devils or NY Islanders

This is disgusting. The only reason they waited for the puck to drop was so no one would be arrested for assault. Fighting is only allowed in professional level hockey, so no one starts fighting until they get there. I say take it out of the game.

(DISCLAIMER: The only sport I remotely follow is Hockey, and I have been a NY Rangers fan since I was 6 or 7 years old.)

These tilts at game start were the follow-up to the two head coaches exchanging (read-yelling at each other w/foul language) words just before the game started. If these teams meet in the playoffs (it`s possible in round 2) it will be a beauty !!

I agree with Rick S really, fighting is loosing it`s place in hockey. They wouldn`t dare do it outside a game because it is illegal. on another note, i loved tortorella`s (NY coach) response to the other coach haha.

This kind of stuff is rare these days. You never see big all out brawls like you used to. Honestly, I`m ok with fighting in the game. Hockey is a rough, full contact sport where play doesn`t stop every five seconds. Tempers flair, sticks fly, and goalies are staunchly protected because unlike a player who can usually walk away, they`re always the center of a rush, and there are usually only 2 of them at a game per team. So the one guy started bleeding, big deal. He may be a little dazed but he`s not crying because of it. Duncan Keith of the Chicago Blackhawks took a puck to the face in the playoffs in 2010 and lost seven teeth; he got a shot of Novocaine in the locker room and was back out on the ice. Case and point, hockey players are some of the toughest athletes on the planet, and many of them are also very smart. Not every player fights, and most players have a scrap and then drop whatever it was they were arguing about.

can some one explain to me why fighting is allowed in hockey, but no other sport? not that i can if they fight or not, but its just always bugged me as to why it is ok there and no other sport? and why is it not allowed in football? i mean, attack a guy who is suited up to be protected from 350 pound guys tackling him doesnt make much sense in the first place, but still...

TL:DR why is fighting ok in hockey?

the big difference in these exchanges compared to fights in other sports, is the amount of damage that can be inflicted by a punch while standing on ice is considerably less. These punches will hurt and cut, but its very rare for a damaging knock out punch on ice due to a punch getting its force from the legs, which is difficult while skating. More damage can be done during normal contact in a hockey match.

@skypirate fighting in hockey is not allowed, you get the harshest penalty possible (5min). Fighting is allowed in many sports.. like MMA, boxing ext..

Ive heard some arguments that the fighting is a "formatted" way for players to settle disputes.

I can *almost* see the logic.

But in this case I dont see a damned thing but a good old fashioned bar fight.

For anyone who doesn`t understand why fighting is (mostly) tolerated in hockey please read this book: The Code: The Unwritten Rules of Fighting and Retaliation in the NHL by Ross Bernstein it`s a great read and really explains it all.

I like how the commentators` big concern about this outbreak of violence is that they may not have enough cameras to get closeups of every fight.

I love in hockey how refs don`t even pretend to care. Once retired players start suing the NHL like they sue the NFL fights will all of a sudden become a real issue.

This is probably more of a publicity stunt than anything. But in hockey fights are allowed because injuring players is an encouraged and viable tactic. Certain members of a hockey team (usually the biggest) are labled `enforces` and have the job of protecting their - and injuring enemy - key players.

Why do they keep doing this in hockey? How is it allowed? Any other sport with consistent fighting like this, the players would get disqualified!

Looked like a scene from Slap Shot. For those that can`t understand why fighting is allowed, it`s because they play a high speed full contact sport while CARRYING WEAPONS. It`s much better to have two guys square off face to face than have them use their sticks.

@madman: there is no way that this is a publicity stunt. As a life-long Devils fan, I can say with certainty that these two teams HATE each other. This was the Devils reaction to the Rangers starting their goon line when they played at the prudential center a month or so ago. In hockey, the away team (Devils) present the host team (Rangers) with their starting line-ups prior to the game. The Rangers responded with their goon squad. Playoff atmosphere hockey at its finest. GO DEVILS!

As a Canadian, you should do better.
