The hole created is many times larger than what would be required for escape.

That`s more than just wanting out.

That`s boredom combined with separation anxiety issues.

That`s not escape. That`s boredom, separation anxiety, teething, or even hunger, but it`s definitely not escape.

Poor dog. It just needs a friend. Or some food. One of those.

Our beagle did pretty much the same thing when she was about 2. I was leaving on Air Force travel for a few months so my dad and I built this "run" in our garage out of 1x4`s and 4x4 posts...thing was huge, about 10 feet long, almost 6 feet high, 3 feet wide. My wife called about 2 weeks after I left telling me the our beagle had basically eating out of it, ridiculous. Now our dog has just turned 5 (yesterday) and she`s happy in a 3x3x5 wire kennel during the day when we`re at work. She had SERIOUS separation anxiety when she was a puppy.

A guy who lived in our (crappy) extra house had the same thing happen when he left his chihuahua rat terrier mix in the bathroom. There was basically no door left. The jerk never replaced the door when he moved out. At least the house was already crap.
