Most of my family have disabilities of one kind or other. I worked with a guy who had downs and to me he was a lovely bloke who was an Elvis fan, enjoyed old war movies and was into the big bands such as Glenn Miller. I`m partially deaf in both ears but I love music and put together some tracks for a church disco a while back. Never stereotype people with disabilities. Get to know us and you will meet some wonderful people.

I echo Kalimata`s sentiments.

As a father of a Downs child I know 1st hand the qualities they have and in my experience they are more loving, caring & accepting than most normal people I meet.
Years ago I also had a couple working for me, and they are harder, more concientious and generally all round better workers than the majority of teenagers around today.

Despite the challenges that face them, they work hard to achieve their potential which is more than can be said for todays youth. The real "retards" are those who despite having access to the best education, healthcare, opportunities & not having to contend with serious health issues, learning difficulities, visual & hearing problems STILL manage to make nothing of their lives.

To parallel a frequently used quote by Black G.I.`s during the Vietnam war; "No Downs Syndrome person ever called me a retard."

It`s unfortunate that most people will never have any experience interacting with Downs persons.

They may be what some call "retarded", but on the whole they lack almost every negative emotion and personality fault that plague "regular" folk. They are generally happy, optimistic, generous, kind, loving, and always find the beauty and wonder in things that I don`t give a second thought to.

I am better for sharing my life with my Downs friends.

Grace has the special ability of not being able to use "an".

Eye-opening? Not really, unless you actually don`t consider disabled people to be people.

Damn, seven posts in... you will do well here BlueBelle77, tell `em.

Girls with love for family will always be prettier in my eyes.

faaaag, I don`t suppose I made any sort of claim that my statement was FLAWLESSLY logical. May I beg your pardon for my rhetoric. Just a personal thought that I shared, which I rarely do on such forums because people like you who just enjoy arguing anything regardless. The point I was attempting make is that I believe most of those who make fun of handicapped people don`t hate them as you imply, but just need to learn something about compassion and the human condition. I would dare to surmise, please excuse me you highness if I am not 100% correct however, that most of the people who say these things have probably never really gotten to know someone with a mental disability. Therefore, having some first hand experience would help to alleviate some of their ignorance and malice. I am very certain you will have some snide remark back, and posting this is an endless circle of internet arguments that no one will ever win. Alas though, I have said my peace. Enjoy your grumpy life!

I seriously wish that everyone who makes idiotic comments about handicapped people will one day have a child with such a condition. I can only hope karma catches up to you all and your ignorance bites you in the ass. No one chooses to be born with handicap like down syndrome, so why taunt someone for something so out of their own control?

I worked with a man who had Down Syndrome and he was absolutely lovely. He just couldn`t understand the concept of being mean and that`s what made it such a pleasure to work with him. He didn`t understand why sending me creepy letters about how much he loved me was so wrong though.

Orchideous, he was making a joke about the mongoloid features of most Downs sufferers. Meaning they tend to have thinner eyes. Much closer to Asians than Caucasians. He used an Asian stereotype joke.

Dude. Pringle. Is a kiss on the cheek. Chill out. It`s called sibling affection. When you get older, you will understand. Until then, stop thinking cooties are gross.

Haha! I believe in a more spartan philosophy, thank you. Those born with disabilities ought to be removed. Morality be damned.

Okay, now that pmarren has lowered the bar so dramatically, let me say that Down is a very strange disorder. Some people are pleasant, high functioners who work very hard to gain an education and fit in with society. At the other end of the spectrum are seriously impacted individuals with considerable physical handicaps and an inability to speak. Let`s give people a chance before we decide where they rate compared to our own wonderful selves.

I once again find it sad that looking through 9gag comments for this story brings back my faith in humanity while reading the comments on a website i`ve been visiting for 5+ years takes it away.

Get well, IAB. You`re sick right now.

Mmm- some of you should be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves. Not very self confident if you feel the need to knock other people. Lucky young man to get on well with his sister, not everyone is so blessed.

This came to mind...

Pat Healy: My real passion is my hobby.
Mary: Really, what`s that?
Pat Healy: I work with retards.
Mary: Isn`t that a little, uhm, politically incorrect?
Pat Healy: Well, heh, to hell with that... no one`s going to tell me who I can and can`t work with, right?
Mary: No, I mean...
Pat Healy: We got this one kid, Mongo... He`s got a forehead like a drive-in movie theatre, but he`s a good ship. So we don`t bust his chops too much. So, one day Mongo gets out of his cage...
Mary: They keep him in a cage?
Pat Healy: Well, it`s just an enclosure...
Mary: No, but they keep him confined?
Pat Healy: Right, yeah.
Mary: That`s bullpoo!
Pat Healy: Well, that`s what I said! So, I went out and I got him, uh, I got him a leash.
Mary: A leash?
Pat Healy: Yeah, one of those ones you can hook on the clothesline, and he can run back and forth and, uh, there`s plenty of room for him to dig and play. That kid

I thought this was actually really sweet, though I anticipated the jerk comments tbh.
A lot of people with or without disabilities would be lucky to have this sort of family support. So er, yeah. Good for Josh.

I have an aunt with Down`s Syndrome. She lives by herself in her own apartment. She held a job for 30 years as a hotel cleaning lady until she was forced into retirement by a new manager who didn`t want to "deal" with her. She`s 63 and comes over for every birthday and every holiday. I compare others to her to make them feel insignificant and stupid.
