A Weight Scale With A Message [Pic]

Submitted by: hole_rocks89 5 years ago Misc

Is the message positive or negative? Interesting in light of the post from this week of that girl who lost 73 pounds.

Once while out shopping I saw my wife step on a scale in some department store, I quickly snuck up behind her and put my toe on the back edge of the scale and pushed down. She damn near had a heart attack. She practically didn`t eat for like two days until I told her what I had done.

News flash: fat people aren`t the only people who worry about their weight. This is a good message.

Fat people who don`t care about their weight and health don`t leave motivational messages on a scale...they leave them on mirrors or on the fridge.

@I-IS-BORED: I did say that the scale itself would only work on one planet. What I was saying is that the number you get in kg here on earth is correct in every planet, whereas you can`t say the same thing of the number you would get in pounds

@GasMaskKid- That`s absolutely true. But a lot of people who ARE at a healthy weight still continue to obsess over it.

This is just silly. Overweight people do not need comforting, they need a salad and a treadmill. It`s not just a cosmetic condition; being overweight is very detrimental to your health and obesity increases your chances of cancer just a little bit less than smoking.

It`s people like you who allow fatties to pretend that being overweight isn`t a bad thing. "It`s just who I am." is an excuse used too often these days.

@insanmonster

while the doctors` office does indeed use a counterweight balance type scale to determine your weight/mass, in the end the mass of the weights is based on gravity at a specific location. unless the mass of the weights being used were measured at the doctors` office you are in, it will still be an approximation of mass calculated by your weight at that specific altitude.

if you need an inanimate object to tell you this on a minutely basis then you have issues other than your weight that you need to concern yourself with...

A lever does not balance masses or forces, it balances moments. A doctor`s scale works by sliding small masses along a lever arm, away from the pivot, increasing the moment they generate. It balances (Fr)_1 = (Fr)_2 or cancel g`s for (mr)_1 = (mr)_2.

F=dp/dt ya scrubs

@jendrian
you got it backwards
A scale is a spring where you push down the spring to the point where Fspring = -kx is equal to Fgravity = w = mg. In higher gravity you would generate a greater displacement and would register a higher weight, displaying mass instead of weight would require scaling by `g` which could only be done for a single value of g (unless you used an electronic scale that could use the weight reading of a known mass to derive g and then scale yours). So the scale, without modification, would only work on one planet.

@Angilion:
It is F=m*acceleration due to gravity (approx 9.8 m/s^2) as weight is the force in the equation, because weight is defined as the effect of the acceleration down a gravity gradient upon a mass.
However when you look at a balance type scale you are comparing masses. We can all agree that in any lever to balance out either side the FORCES need to equal out. So [F(1)=F(2)] and [F=m*a] correct....therefore [F(1)=m(1)*gravity] and [F(2)=m(2)*gravity] (do you follow me this far?)so you can cocnlude that [m(1)*gravity=m(2)*gravity] and lastly gravity can be cancelled out on either side leaving m(1)=m(2)...therefore showing that with a balance type scale masses are being compared.
I think you`re wrong in your use of F=m*gravity, as gravity is the force, but I think you`re right in your overall argument and I was wrong before. You`ve convinced me that a balance scale does indeed measure mass by comparison with a known mass (as long as there is some gravity and it`s the same over the length of the scale`s arms).

@ all those people who think a scale will only give you the force applied to it, you need to know that there`s a direct (as in 1-to-1) relation between weight and mass, aka: w = mg

therefore, if the scale is in kilograms, the force applied to it is converted by the actual lines in the scale to the mass, which is independent of gravitational attraction. So it works in every planet.

It`s a matter of choice what to display, weight or mass, and scales in kilograms display mass.

I`m not saying the scale works in every planet, I`m saying the measure you get from it, tells you how massive you are regardless of gravitational attraction.

The difference between a doctor`s scale and a regular household scale is that a doctors scale uses a counterweight and a household scale uses springs.

With springs the Force (F) used to move the spring a distance of x is dependent on the spring constant unique to that spring. (F=kx) This shows that indeed a spring scale measures a persons weight (as opposed to mass).

However when you look at a balance type scale you are comparing masses. We can all agree that in any lever to balance out either side the FORCES need to equal out. So [F(1)=F(2)] and [F=m*a] correct....therefore [F(1)=m(1)*gravity] and [F(2)=m(2)*gravity] (do you follow me this far?)so you can cocnlude that [m(1)*gravity=m(2)*gravity] and lastly gravity can be cancelled out on either side leaving m(1)=m(2)...therefore showing that with a balance type scale masses are being compared.
a doctor`s scale would measure mass regardless of planet
How?

A scale measures either the force applied to it or (in the case of a balance-type scale) the ratio of the forces on each arm. Either way, it`s measuring force. You can verify that yourself with simple experiments. Rest your hand or foot on a scale. Now, without moving your body, use your muscles to exert force on the scale. If you are right and it measures mass, you`ll see no change in the reading. If I am right and it measures force, you`ll see the reading increase.

Scales, regardless of who owns them, measure force. The scale can be marked in pounds, kg, degrees celsius, pints, leprechauns...the labelling is just labelling. The scales are measuring force, regardless of the labelling.

No it wouldn`t, because a scale measures your weight (with some degree of inaccuracy). You can mark the scale in units of mass. You can mark the scale in units of anything you like. But it will still be measuring your weight.

"but it will tell you how fat you are"

Nope. The scale can`t tell the difference between fat and muscle. Weight can change depending on what you had for dinner the night before, or breakfast. The scale can`t tell if the extra weight is simply water weight which can go away quickly, or fat. The scale will read differently depending on if it`s your scale, or the scale at the doctor`s office, or the scale at your friend`s house. The scale will also read differently depending on how you stand on it (feet close together or far apart, for example).

It`s not a good way to determine "how fat you are" at all.
