kinky_afr0: There`s a recorded message of a conversation with the coastguard where Schettino admits he abandoned ship before the evacuation is complete. The CG are shouting at him to get back on board and continue overseeing the evacuation of other passengers, and he refuses.

The captain went close to the shore to please one of the staff member that came from the island...

The experience of a lifetime they said!

In any case kinky_afr0 lifeboats are still on ship cause when the captain gave the evacuation order the ship was allready to much tilted. So you can see that the decision to give the evacuation order so late was not a great idea at the end.

kinky_afr0 i don`t know what to say, obviously you are free to belive in who you want, i give only a suggestion, if your friends know something different from what "Guardia Costiera" know is better they start to talk immediatly with police cause the situation for your beloved captain Schettino is not so good now.

The damned crew lied to the passengers for too long; first an "electrical problem" then a "fire" were the cause, even though they knew that wasn`t the case.

By the time the order to abandon ship came, it was too late to drop most of the lifeboats. The ship was tilted too much.

They should`ve told the passengers to go immediately to their cabins and get their vests, then head IMMEDIATELY to their lifeboat stations.

Unfortunately, Costa can only be sued in Italian courts. We`ll see how that works out.

@Zuriel You really think there`s `just` enough lifeboats for those onboard?? the lifeboats on any cruise ship far exceed the capacity of the ship itself, for this very reason (capsize)

and I`m sure the media are more trustworthy than a number of unbiased crew members, as for saying it was an electrical failure, this is the smartest thing he could have done, you never tell people what is really wrong, people panic, and a mass panic of near 4000 people is the last thing needed when an evacuation of this scale takes place, this is sheer common sense, I hope I`m never in an emergency situation with you. You are welcome to believe what the media tells you, as for me, I`ll believe my friends first, the people who were actually there.

In any case the real problem is that there are still 20 or more people missing, so before to try any ship rescue they are searching for this people.

Cartunze Actualy seem possible to recover this ship, they allready are discussing the way on how to do so,they say that the best thing to do is to use enormous inflatable cushions, the other problem is the fuel inside but there is allready a dutch company specialized on this kind of things working on it.

HERE is an article which discusses what happened.

160 foot gash? Ouch!

It seems that when the ship hit the rock, the Captain tried to `beach it` to avoid sinking, which is a good idea. But the ship rolled on it`s side once it hit the sand, that is why the gash is out of the water, eh?

kinky_afr0 i`ve found an article that talk about the fact the captain was allready on ground after few minutes but is in Italian, i don`t know if you can understand it. The sorce is "Guardia Costiera", the police of the sea, not some biased media . Italian article about the escape of captain Schettino

kinky_afr0 well i live in Italy, is 4 days that this is the principal news here, i think that i know what i`m sayng. Captain Schettino is arrested for many reson and 1 of that is exactly the fact he was one of the first to abandon the ship. When the first rescue team arrive at the place they found him on the coast while the ship was still full of passengers. In any case he have done to much mistakes.
1 he was sailing to near to the coast, like just 300 meters away from island.
2 After the crash he have lied to all passengers sayng that they had just an electrical failure, he ordered to abandon the ship when was to late, luckily there was a sort of mutiny inside the ship and some memebers of the ship crew started the procedure for the evacuation before the captain gave the order to do so.
3 He abandon the ship for first and also when he was ordered to come back to the ship he stay on the island.
4 Police have arrested him cause they think he was planning to escape from

how in the F*CK can a ship that big sink if it "runs aground"? tip over, maybe, but sink and kill people? to "run aground" i assume it would be in no more than 100 feet deep water.

captain did not abandon the ship, I worked for Carnival cruise lines (owners of Costa) for years and have many friends who were onboard, one of these friends was on the last lifeboat containing passengers and could still see Captain Schettino along with several other senior officers attached to the railing of deck 3 coordinating the evacuation while the ship was sinking. This is just another example of why we shouldn`t believe everything we hear and read in mainstream media

Yes Ant0n, the captain pass to near the coast and hit a massive rock, he managed to aproach the island and this is a good thing, the bad thing is that he was one of the first to abbandon the ship while almost all people was still inside the boat.

Who the hell writes the comments on this goddamn site?!?!?

It did NOT strike a reef. It ran aground, on sand and rocks. That does not constitute a reef!!
