He always was a whiny so-and-so.
I guess he was respected because he`d worked a long time in a high profile job and never(As far as I know) got caught leaving his cancer ridden wife for his long time mistress, or dinking little boys-so:
Kudos to you sir, rest in peace.

Hate to say it but he makes some good points. The line between beauty and drivel is thin. To often is the latter masqueraded as "modernism" and praised as genius.

Most of this "art" is garbage and the artists are likely laughing all the way to the bank, while calling critics "uneducated" or "uncultured".

AGREED. It just bugs be that no skill is being used! With old sculptures and art, it was incredibly intricate and took a ton of experience and skill to achieve. This? Be an art major grad and find a sheet of metal. Boom.

Apparently all it takes to be an artist is way too much money. There`s a guy out there who sold a sculpture of an a naked anime character using his sperm as a lasso. It`s like somebody decided it makes sense to give some one with the artistic talent of a high school drop out $100,000 to make whatever the hell looks stupid.

Everyone get too hung up on the aesthetic appeal of art. Art IS art. Bad art is -STILL- art. The artists` intentions are not so important as to overlook how a certain work impacts yourself. It is all in what you take away with you. In Andy Rooney`s case it seems he took away a healthy does of pretentious bullpoo.

"What is a human face? Who sees it correctly-the photographer, the mirror or the painter? Are we to paint what`s on the face, what`s inside the face, or what`s behind it?" -Pablo Picasso,
On shedding the ideals of classical art styles for his own.

Andy also is not taking the full scope of the projects like CowParade into account and evaluating individual pieces of a large scale installment on their aesthetic appeal to him.

Colloquially, Yeah, well...y`know that`s just like uh...your opinion man.

"Picasso has earned the right to do whatever he wants." Quote from the video. And yet, at 33 seconds, he uses a Picasso painting on a sculpture as a reason art these days is terrible! Fail. Generally, I support Andy Rooney. He`s cute in an "Old guy`s got an old fashioned rant" kind of way. But just because he can`t understand something doesn`t make it wrong and whoever cut this video together cleary doesn`t know art either.

The foo-foo types with art degrees will think us layment just don`t "get it". But I say, if you need a degree to even tell it`s art, then it`s not art at all. Art is self evident and visable for anyone to see that it`s ART.

It seems to me you are claiming that 5 year olds can not create art Gerry. If so at what age does an inspired creation from a human mind expressed to others constitute "art" for you? 13? 18? 21?

"Art is self evident and visable for anyone to see that it`s ART."
That`s is exactly what i think Gerry.
Art don`t need to be explained, cause art must be something universal that evryone understand at first look, when an artist start to tell you..."look man in this paint you can clearly see how my mood was sad cause that day i found a piece of parsley on my teeth, you can clearly notice that by the materical extrusion of the blue periwinkle that absorb the lines on the paint in a dot of pain" well, in that case you are for sure in front of an idiot.

Rooney seem very focused on esthetics in art, constantly talking about how it did not "look good". If that is your primary perspective on art, and indicates whether it is good art or not, you are simply ignorant. Art is there to make us feel and think, not just be pretty and comforting. How ever if there is no real skill or craft involved it´s not for me. A lot of what he shows here seems void of talent of any sort, except landing the deal to do the piece for the city.

@piperfawn Just because the artist can explain to you why they made a certain choice or another does not devalue the work. (Or possibly bullshít you because you`re asking them for their opinion instead of forming your own)

Monty Python is accepted performing silliness for silliness` sake, but if you do the same thing in a physical medium and it is deemed less relevant than art created with a specific agenda or message.

wolladude nope art is not in the eye of the beholder, art is something that have an universal spirit that evryone can feel. If i put my feces in a can and i call it ART i`m just doing a provocation, i`m not doing art. Art is born as an universal language, from the paints of the cavemans to the statues on temples, if you vomit some color on a piece of papaer sayng this represent the time you hit your finger with an hammer that is not art is just you "personal" and "intimistic" way of doing crap that don`t have nothing to share with an "universal" message.

When I was ~10 yrs. old, I visited a large art museum with my family. They were short a tour guide, so our group was conducted by the curator.

We came to a modern painting -- a 10` x 10` square with a few blocks of bright colors and a diagonal line across it -- and the curator dutifully told us all about the painting and the artist. While everyone was "oohing" and "ahhing," I walked to the front of the group and said to the curator, "I don`t get it."

He replied in a hushed tone, "Neither do I."

I didn`t realize how widespread the paint-a-fiberglass-animal trend is. If you haven`t had it your city, it`s a charitable program where white molded animals are painted by various artists (and sometimes amateurs), displayed all over the place, and then auctioned off. They range from inspired to "you must be kidding."
In my city, we`ve had orcas, bears, and eagles so far.

Public art has always attracted public vitriol. Rooney talks about modern art being created, although that movement had its peak when he was a very young man. I suspect that is when he stopped caring about fine art. I for one enjoy crop circles the most as public art or land art. Makes me lol that folks think aliens made it.

The second one is flat, no emotions just a mess that someone buy for the name putted on it and that most probably after few years will finish in some basement covered in dust.

From your lack of knowledge on the subject I am guessing your job is sitting in a chair guarding the pieces. According to you art is only what you appreciate. Anything else is just done for money even if someone else appreciates it. That is very closed minded. It`s not the worst thing I have heard on the subject. That was from a first year college student that told me you can`t be an artist unless you have an art degree.

Piperfawn, I don`t get the second piece you posted. It doesn`t speak to me at all. It looks like a crumpled up piece of paper. If it is twenty feet tall then I would say it is art. Or if it is made from metal. I would have to look at it. But if it is just a crumpled up piece of paper I say it is garbage - literally.
