The Day Gandhi Sent A Letter To Hitler [Pic]

No, really--this isn"t a set-up to a joke. The Mahatma really did sent a letter to Hitler, asking him to end the war.

i call fake. it is rather odd that an indian is writing to hitler in english. it would be odd if it was in german too. maybe hitler ignored it because he couldn`t read english.

Bet he ignored this because of all the spelling and punctuation mistakes. Hitler was such a f-ucking Granmar Nazi.

Is this real? Why would an Indian write in English to a German?

"At least here we see an example of someone trying to stop bloodshed before it even happens."

That`s all fine and dandy, but once you`re in a war you are IN A WAR. So why don`t you try writing letters to Iran, while we deal with the big boy stuff?

Never start a sentence with `But`. That`s why this didn`t work.

You gun ho Americans (not all Americans I might add but a significant number of you) talk of a war against islamic terrorists, it was American actions which caused this war or terror in the first place you ignorant lot. At least here we see an example of someone trying to stop bloodshed before it even happens. As futile as the gesture might seem now, we should at least respect the fact that the man tried.
Gandhi`s method relies on the people you`re opposing being at least quite nice about it.
Yeah, did he really think this pacifist bull$#!+ would have worked with the Nazis the same as it worked with the British?

So, how`d that work out for ya, Ghandi?

BTW, this is also Ron Paul`s foreign policy.

Gandhi was a socialist, racist...and supported Hitler. That`s enough for me to hate the man.

if we just peacefully resisted the islamic terrorists, we would finally end these wars on foreign soil.
I mean, they would still kill us, but at least we wouldnt be at war with them. THanks Ghandi!

@Johanvb: Quite true! And accurate as well.

I was picking at the OP saying "end the war" as opposed to what Gandhi acutally said: Don`t Start a war.
It`s probably a real letter, people actually wrote them back in the day, eh?

If the Nazis had conquered India (which, of course, they wanted to do), Gandhi might well have stuck to his principles of nonviolent resistance and led thousands of followers to do the same.

And the Nazis would have slaughtered them all, dumped the bodies in a ditch and not given a damn. End of resistance.

Gandhi`s method relies on the people you`re opposing being at least quite nice about it.

True that the invasion of Poland hadn`t begun yet.
But in `33 Hitler had already come to power and started the Gleichschaltung (a kind of process to establish a dictatorship).
In February that same year Hitler spoke with several high placed military leaders to rearm Germany (something that was forbidden after Germany lost WWI).
Also earlier that year the Reichstag (parliament building in Berlin) was set on fire which started the hunt on communists and concentration-camp Dachau was opened to house political prisoners.

In `38 Nazi Germany annexed Austria which was part of the reinstatement of the `Heimat` (homeland) that Hitler had envisioned.

Therefore, because the war wasn`t actually in effect it was quite clear a war was in the making.
So the fact that Ghandi wrote Hitler a letter to urge him to reconsider his decisions and thus preventing a war could be true.

Gandhi was not so dumb thinking Hitler might have listened to him. They shared some pretty strong views, about the Jews for example.

THis letter is real and shows a glimpse of how messed up Ghandi`s view was. It was critiqued as “a desperate, naive mix of humility and ego” He also told Britain to let the Nazi`s "take possession of your beautiful island, with your many beautiful buildings. You will give all these but neither your souls, nor your minds. If these gentlemen choose to occupy your homes, you will vacate them. If they do not give you free passage out, you will allow yourself man, woman and child, to be slaughtered …"

i call fugazi. Gandhi was smart enough to spell "deliberately" correctly and edit his typos.

Since this is before the war started, and mentions "preventing" a war, CAPTION FAIL!

Otherwise it`s good to see that Gandhi had some balls.
