hagane: "It probably just means that being a Canadian resident, you don`t have to answer the question of your own free will."

Isn`t that what the `I wish to not disclose` option is for?

If gender is used to ask for whether you are male or female, it is less offensive than the question asking for your sex.

The "Gender" question asks which do you recognize yourself as/want to be recognized as.

The "Sex" one strictly asks : Dick or Pussy?

@patch: yes, oxford defines gender as such, but also includes the grammatical reference for noun classes in languages such latin (span, ital., french), german, and greek, among others. That being said, both can refer to "the state of being male or female," but as you say, sex tends to refer to biology, while gender tends to refer to cultural roles/differences Source: The Oxford Essential Dictionary of Difficult Words, American Ed.

This is not a difficult question. "Gender"
It`s asking if you have an outie or an innie.
It`s not asking if you have some rare birth defect of the genitals.

Overcomplicating is over complicated.

@Gerry: Sex is the biological definition, gender is more of a social construct i.e. gender roles attributed to men and women. Although the lines are getting a little more blurry with gender introduced into the common vernacular.

@almightybob1 Actually people are born that are neither male nor female biologically (equally both). There is a chart of variables to define gender including blood tests, but these can be bang in the middle, and obviously it is as much emotional as anything. There is only an existence of either/or because society has made it that way. Also worth noting is that there are, for example, people totally female in appearance and in terms of genitalia, but totally male in every other test, (so actually mostly male but not apparent)
Also, it is incredibly appauling that you still only see Male or Female as if thats the only two sexes on earth. They are the majority, but not the only. There should be a Male, Female, OTHER option to be honest. Those that fall under the OTHER catagory should also not feel ashamed or alienated.
Depends how you`re defining sex. Under the biological definition, i.e. what gametes does an organism produce, human sex pretty much does fall into those two categories - male if you produce male gametes (sperm) and female if you produce female gametes (ova).

To the best of my knowledge no human has ever produced both male and female gametes (the biological definition of hermaphroditism). I suppose it may be possible to produce neither, in which case you could add asexual as a third category, but I see no reason to write "other" rather than "asexual".

I-is-bored, they mean the same thing, idiot! In Canada you can`t ask that question on an application. If you want answer it, guess you can, but if you are canuck, you can click that and they can`t hold it against you. I hope this settles the conflict, kids.

Hate to be the buzz-kill but there is a law that prohibits the collection of personal information. Its part of our Privacy Act.

^This^

But I guess Im just hoping for too much out of society, what with being something other than Male or Female being completely against the religious nutjobs.

When I applied for a job with BP many moons ago, I had to fill in one of those HR forms to keep track of the ethnic diversity of their workforce... so on a sheet you had to tick if you were African, Afro-Carribbean, Native American, Latin American, Far-East Asian, Middle Eastern etc. Two separate options were "White" and another one was "Irish". What the yellow rubbery f*ck was going on there then?
