I`m all for a huge space program, but crossing your arms and blinking a wish will not make a tourist market or provide industrial use.

And he obviously doesn`t understand international treaty. No one nation can claim the moon as territory...not even the US. "when they have 13,000 colonists they can apply for statehood" What a maroon.

I actually agree that we ought to have a moon base, but it should be internationally shared and should serve as a launch point for other missions.

I don`t want Newt to be the one to implement it though.

And auburnjunky, you guys constantly complain about Obama being a big spender. Sorry, you don`t get the right to be annoyed when he cuts anything.

We could do it, and cheaply, too. Prizes.

    To paraphrase Jerry Pournelle;
"The sum of $XX billion to be paid for construction and maintenance of a Lunar base in which no fewer than 31 Americans have continuously resided for a period of not less than four years and one day.

The payments made shall be exempt from all US taxes."

OTOH, if you wait for government to actually execute this, it. will. never. happen.

We probably come in contact with 100 + items every day that were invented or made better thanks to NASA and the Space Race.

    Including

    Memory Foam
    Scratch-resistant Lenses
    Ear Thermometers
    Shoe Insoles
    Long-distance Telecommunications
    Adjustable Smoke Detectors
    Cordless Tools
    Water Filters

    To name a very few.

I totally agree with Newt on this.

Well, not to be that guy, but, finders keepers. If you Europeans want to send some people up there to claim it, go ahead, but America is still the only country to set foot on the moon. Anyways, it would belong to whoever could establish the first working base and defend it, regardless of what treaties we`ve signed. If you want the moon, you`ll have to pry it from our cold, dead, chubby hands. It will probably be owned by a mining company or something like that anyways.

Newt isn`t thinking about the geopolitical ramifications if the USA tries to establish a moon colony and then add it as a US state. Fortunately, the US doesn`t have that kind of willpower or power left to accomplish such an ambition project, let alone the fiscal power.

Obama directly cut the Shuttle program. Guess how much it saved?

Find 1 million pennies. Take one of those pennies. Cut it into 16ths. Take one of the 16 pieces of that penny that was in the pile of 1 million pennies.

That, in a nutshell, is how much cutting the Shuttle program saved the US.

@TheShgn: There`s a treaty between all space fairing countries (except China) that says outer space is international and cannot be claimed. Kinda like the ocean, or Antarctica to be more precise. We can have bases, and the bases would be ours, but the land directly around those bases would not be ours.

Private capital will not pursue such a venture without understanding the risks or without a huge financial incentive. The closest American private enterprise will come to a moon landing is a Hollywood fantasy like Salvage 1.

Newt is a space cadet. He doesn`t understand the free market, he doesn`t understand international law, he doesn`t have his priorities right, he just wants to sound presidential and declare some lofty goals.

He is quite simply unfit for high office.

Anyone who thinks a base can be set up on the moon in the next 8 years is a moron. Moon Treaty, difficulties transporting water, costs of many shuttle flights to bring construction materials, not to mention the lack of people qualified to travel, build and then live on the moon. patchgrabber: He`s not delusional and we already have the technology. Water is recycled on the international space station, water (ice) does exist on the moon, we`ve already built and tested a moon rover, we`ve built sections of the space station that, with modifications, could be used on the moon, and we have many astronauts in training and are looking for more.

Also, we`ll be transporting foreign astronauts to the moon, as well, thus no treaty will be broken.

The space program is a brilliant idea and research always pays off....eventually. But Newts attempt to stir "American Pride" like Kennedy did is a failed attempt. Remember when Bush tried this with "Manned Mission to Mars" and a "Moon Base".

Cajun: It is politically feasible. America needs a vision, a goal, something to look forward to, something to inspire our kids again.

Right now the public is being fed platefuls of doom and gloom, that`s not healthy for any society. You liberals whine about getting more middle-class jobs, but when a republican devises a plan to create them you sneer and say it can`t be done.

Well if that plan is another government project than yes of course I would complain. As for doom and gloom are you suggesting that it`s unhealthy for people to be worried about how we citizens are paying out the nose fund welfare and defense? We`re in a huge hole right now and now Newt is asking America to make what is possibly a hundred-trillion dollar investment without knowing what the return on investment would be if any. That is why it is politically unfeasible. So I CrakrJak as a fiscal conservative emplore Newt and you to wait until the private sector has a business case for a moon base before we Americans are forced to make yet another likely unsustainable investment.

    "hundred-trillion dollar investment"

More like tens of billions. Moving on.

    @AuburnJunky

My point is it`s a huge investment both short and long term and we don`t know what the return on investment will be.

Also, we`ll be transporting foreign astronauts to the moon, as well, thus no treaty will be broken.

Well if it`s to become the "51st state" then yes, treaty will be broken.

Water is recycled on the international space station, water (ice) does exist on the moon, we`ve already built and tested a moon rover, we`ve built sections of the space station that, with modifications, could be used on the moon, and we have many astronauts in training and are looking for more.

How exactly would they get to this ice? Is there an abundance of it on the surface? Yes, they recycle water, but you can only recycle so much, it`s not infinite. Using a moon rover is hardly proof that a moon base could be sustained. I`m not saying it`s technologically impossible, I`m saying that its ridiculous cost is the biggest impetus, especially for a country with a shaky economy and no current space program.

    CrakrJak strikes again...
    *facepalm.

the fact this is even being talked about during a presidential campaign only speaks to how out of touch people like the newt are with society... and to how easily influenced weak minds like CrakrJak`s are.

    unbelievable.
