Not a bean bag type gun, is it? If those are bullets, that dude has to be dead. Shouldn`t they knee cap him or something? I get that he made a very aggressive move with a crowbar and I would call that justified, but I would like to think that a highly trained professional would shoot to wound. Also, it`s sad that those kids laugh after watching someone get shot, even if they think he deserved it.

10 bullets seems a bit much... But then again... You can clearly see him pulling back for a swing at the guy holding the dog.. He was protecting his partner.. Looks like he wasn`t to happy about killing the guy either.. It`s sad, but if he hadn`t reacted right away, his partners brains would likely be on the ground..

Interesting. Definitely a conduit bender and not a crowbar, meaning he was probably an electrician also.

The description of the video says he was pronounced dead at the hospital. It`s a shame they had to shoot him, but given the circumstances... I understand the necessity to open fire.

Completely Justified.. By the way those guys were saying "call an ambulance for that kid" they were obviously in shock of the situation and didnt accept that the guy was dead without chance of being revived. Ive seen people laughing with their leg twisted completely around because they were in shock that it happened.

mocrules-"Shouldn`t they knee cap him or something?"

No. He was threatening an officer with a pipe-bender (not a crowbar). You stop him, which means center of mass.

    He was an idiot.

    mocrules-"professional would shoot to wound"

You do not `shoot to wound`. You shoot to stop. Dead is the best stop. He had already shrugged off a tazer. A leg wound could very well have left him capable of attacking.

    Kain1-"10 bullets seems a bit much... "

If the situation has escalated to the point of firing your pistol, you do not stop firing until the attacker is Down and immobile (or if you lose line of sight).

@MeGrendel: Well, yeah, i guess.. I agree with you that it was completely justified to shoot him. But i can`t help but think that 10 rounds was a bit much.. Of course i wasn`t there, but as far as i can see, he staggered away after the first 2 shots. It looked like the immediate threat was averted.. Then they shot him 8 more times.. He might have survived 2 shots.. That`s sort of the point i`m trying to make; he didn`t necessarily have to die.. Not that i`m especially sad he died, but it didn`t have to go that far..

    What a shame.

    Justified? Maybe.

I just think a "less than lethal" solution could have been applied in this instance. And yeah, I know, they tried the tazer. Maybe the cops need one of those launchers that shoots a net at him, like Spiderman. I mean, he had a freakin` crowbar (or pipe-bender or whatever). If he`d had a gun, then yes, take him down.

justified.. end of story. Please keep your wacky theories for yourself without knowing the rules or only watching the video with 1 eye.. he didn`t turn his back on the cops, he turned around to swing. he was clearly not going to be stopped any other way. It`s simple.. everybody knows that if you attack an officer with a weapon you get shot.. about the amount of rounds used.. well as someone said earlier, officer`s call.. nobody should blame him for being better safe than sorry.. it`s still their job to protect, even, or especially their partners. Credit to the cop for doing the right thing and for the guy.. who knows how many lifes he did or would have ruined in his (possibly drugged) life.

No loss to the world with him being dead, but it was excessive. You let them get away with killing by choice in this instance and they will start trying in even less necessary instances. Needs some of punshiment (like a temp suspension) so him and his police friends is less quick to shoot off 10 shots at someone close range in the chest.

They tried a less than lethal response with a better option (lethal) as backup. Exactly how much equipment do you expect the cops to carry? This isn`t Grand Theft Auto where all you have to do is hit the `Y` button to change guns.

greenbasterd-"there nobody on this fine earth i couldn`t control"

    Yeah. Right. You`re delusional.

Evil_Eye-"You let them get away with killing by choice "

You`re an idiot. He could easily have killed the cop with the pipe-bender. This was a clear case of `suicide by cop`. They is not question that it will be found to be a justifiable shooting.

They tried a less than lethal option "the tazer to the face". He was obviously on drugs, the tazer had no effect. He was getting ready to swing that pipe bender at the cop that tazed him and was rightfully and justifiably shot. End of story all the cops went home to their wives and kids.....bad guy goes to the morgue. Moral of the story: Don`t bring a pipe bender to a gun fight!!!

I think it could have been handled better, for example by letting the dog go, but at the same time one swing into someones head with that thing could kill. The guy most definitely turned and made to swing it on an officer and the cop made a flash decision to protect the other officer. I`m absolutely against abusive cops and I think these guys could do with some extra training but I don`t think it qualifies as a wrongful death. It`s sad when anyone has to die no matter the circumstances. Just my two cents.

crackyhoss-"couple times in the leg and he`d go down, no?"

Hit his with a taser and he`d go down, no? Oh wait, they TRIED THAT.

Let`s make this simple for simpletons. You shot to STOP. Most foolproof way to STOP is to KILL.

Shoting the bender out of his hand, or nicking his leg, or richocheting off three walls into his left testicle is crap for movies, which bear no resemblance to real life.

mykunter-"keep it in the trunk of the car"

Have you evern seen what`s already in the trunk of an officer`s car? Amoung other things: First aid kit, riot gear, extra ammo/shotgun, Emergency kit, flares, oxygen tank, fire extinguisher, scene tape, tool box, spare tire, jack etc.

Face it, no matter how dangerous the situation, YOU`RE only going to be happy when the cop dies. Anything else and he was `overreacting`.

    1. Aiming for the knee is terribly inaccurate and against protocol, even at close range, considering...

    2. Adrenaline- anyone criticizing them for shooting him 10 times must not have A. been in a fight and B. watched the video. It`s not hard to see they got off 10 rounds in less than 4 seconds. If someone on PCP is about to bash your skull in, you`re going to shoot until he`s down. There`s no way you can sit in your comfy chair and say "oh, well, I would have limited myself to 2 rounds blah blah blah."

Excessive? Sure. Understandable? I`d say so.

I agree that the guy had a death wish, and he certainly looked like he was threatening to swing at the cops, but the thing that bothers me is that the REPORT (if you click the link below the video) claims that he SWUNG TWICE AT THE COPS before they shot him. Looks like the cops didn`t know the whole thing was caught on tape. Why lie if you don`t have anything to hide??

"Why lie if you don`t have anything to hide??"

That`s an easy question to answer. Fact is, very few cops have actually dealt with life and death issues if you exclude military vets. When you`re not fully prepared for these situation, tunnel vision is VERY easy to succumb to. The reality is, these cops probably weren`t even sure they had nothing to hide. It`s not difficult to blank out on the specifics when you just shot someone. "Was he really swinging the conduit bender at Joe, or was he offering his hands to be cuffed?" Best just go with "I had a reason to shoot."

You never hear of a cop shooting once or twice, do you? I think part of the explanation is that modern automatics shoot so fast, so easily, that by the time the officer is over the first impulse to shoot, he`s capped off half a dozen shots or more. Granted, guns are to be used only if deadly force is merited, but the odds or a perp surviving would go way up were he hit with one or two bullets, and I wish they`d look at a way to accomplish that.

cops are taught to shoot to kill. not top shoot and wound someone potentially making them even more dangerous.

any time a cop fires his weapon he is shooting for center mass and they will likely put multiple bullets in the person to ensure they are dead. a gun is a DEADLY weapon, not a less than lethal weapon and its only purpose once used is TO KILL the person.

if you attack a cop with a weapon and that cop has a gun pointed at you, you will get shot.

though I am wondering why a tazer wasn`t used or why the dog wasn`t set lose on him?

They already tried the less than lethal way which didn`t work and judging by how the cop freaked out it looked like he was scared for his life.

Once you pop out a few bullets its kinda hard to stop with all the adrenaline and action happening, you also have to remember that cops don`t shoot their guns to "stop" people they use it to put them down for a looooong time, looks like it was totally justified to me

I get so tired of non-trained non-law enforcement giving idiotic opinions about what should be done during a life threatening situation. I got in a shooting with a man armed with a rifle. Do you know how many times I shot? As many as it took to stop the threat. Until you put down your Doritos and put on a badge, don`t judge others. Those officers did a perfect job.

I have to agree with ccpd here. I work closely with officers at my job and see first hand more restraint than most would believe. Being a LEO does not make you a bad person and you ultimately have to live with the decisions that you make. He made the right decision at the time but he`s likely to relive it 100 times a day and think `what if`. In case you haven`t picked up a pipe bender, it`s almost like swinging an axe. Had he connected to the head of the cop the cop would most likely have been the one lying on the ground.

It looks justified. Does anyone think that by letting the dog handle it things would have gone better?

Judging by the guy getting tazed in the face and barley flinching, then trying to attack the officers, he was probably fu cked up on PCP. The dog wouldn`t have stopped him, and he might have killed the dog. This is why you don`t do PCP, because you get your ass shot.

Why do you guys even have a legal system? Why not just let a officer shoot every criminal over there, think of all money you could save.

I`m just amazed how close the police were to the guy in the first place, ain`t distance to a potential dangerous suspect a must?

"Judging by the guy getting tazed in the face and barley flinching" -- I think anyone that managed to remain upright after a Tazing would be rather pissed off about it. It`s called cause and effect; something police know nothing about. Is that a reason to empty your magazine into him? These idiots (the Police) should not be allowed to possess a firearm or tazer.

Maybe you should watch the video more closely buddy. They did taze him, in the neck, and he barely flinched so I doubt mace would have been of much use.

I`m guessing they were rubber bullets. If the intention was to severely injure him I imagine they would have set the dog on him instead.

MeGrendel - I guess if you`re someone that just needs to call people names, you can`t even stop to think something through.

There are so many examples (and those are only the ones that are made public), where once a single shot is fired, everyone just empties their guns.

After the first one or two shots, this guy was knocked down and no longer the same threat. Instead of pausing, the cop kept firing after he was down.

That`s what we see in the video and I can`t believe you think that`s ok.

nettech98-" if you`re someone that just needs to call people names, you can`t even stop to think something through"

Nope, it`s just a sign that your statement was so damn stupid it didn`t merit a rational response.

    But if you insist:

This video shows a CLEAR example of a justified use of deadly force. They tried non-lethal methods. A taser was deployed, which uses up to 200,000 volts, and had absolutely no effect.

The perp turns and attacks the officer. His intentions were not in question. The weapon he had was deadly.

At that point, lethal force is not only authorized, but mandated.

He was not knocked down after the first one or two shot. (not to mention, once lethal force is mandated, you shoot until they stop moving).

I know what you `saw in the video`, and it bears no resemlbance to reality. But it does demonstrate your bias. The only satisfactory outcome for you would be for the cop to die.

And to all the people saying "awe the poor crazy man only had a pipe bender, the cops shouldn`t have shot him!" newsflash: having your head caved in by a heavy piece of metal makes you just as dead as getting shot. Cope protected his partner. done

spanerbulb-"seems a bit excessive, surely one bullet would be sufficient."

The Taser was not sufficient, one bullet may not have been sufficient. The rest of the clip is just insurance.

Sure, let`s just have new procedure: "If deadly force is require, fire one (1) round at the assailant. Stop, reassess the situation, procede in accordance to SOP. Example: Assailant is swinging blunt object at officer. Fire off one shot, stop and assess. Is the assailant down? Stop. Has the assailant buried the hatchet in your head? Proceed to fire one (1) round and reassess the situation."

Anyone who thinks this is excessive needs to stay in their nice, comfortable, delusional little world.

Why didn`t they use the dog? A dog bite is worth 10x what a taser is. Once that sucker starts shaking you, you`d wish you were dead.

siding with the cops on this one. he didn`t follow commands from cops, when taser failed he started to charge an officer with a weapon? i would have fired too. it was the best course of action at the time.

Idk man. why couldnt they just let the dog go? He would not have been able to attack them with that crowbar.

Still, I guess 5 shots when standing, then another 5 while on the ground is not excessive.

    For the record:

The man who was shot was named Steve Rodriguez.

He was tasered, but it apparently didn`t affect him and he ripped the tasers out.

They have withheld the autopsy report so far, so there is no information on whether the tasers hit him or simply didn`t penetrate his clothes, nor how many of the shots hit him.

He was shot at five times by one officer, and five more times by a second officer.

He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

An investigation into the incident is taking place:
