I-A-B Reader Email Of The Day #9: A Line Crossed?

Hey Anon (he/she didn"t use a name),

This is one of the few times I"m gonna shut my big yapper--shocking, I know. I didn"t submit or approve this video that you speak of--it was one of the Internet-famous I-A-B Mods. I don"t know who because the clip in question was submitted by a vetern reader--Bjarki--and one of the Mods approved it. So I"m going to let the Mods field this question--either the Mod that approved it or any of the other Mods that might want to share their method and philosophy on submitting and approving content.

[My take after finally watching the video (I"m finally watching it right now for the very first time) is yeah, the video is interesting. Sorta reminds of something Quentin Tarantinomight have written into a film of his--you know: morbid, dark humor. You"re right--it"s not a jewel is the crown of feminism, but again--out of context. Would I have approved it? I don"t know--I can"t say. I"ve approved some pretty dumb shitover the years. You"re also right about some of the comments--immature and insensitive, but you have to remember, the readers that left those comments (OK, let"s be honest, they were probably all guys) have probably never gotten laid and haven"t figured out the basics of how to treat the ladies.]

So Mods, if you have something to add, please do so...

So much for shutting my yapper, Fancy

PS: I do appreciate your well-written letter, Anon. It was clear, concise and thought out. I wish every email was like this--most read like English is the person"s third language.

An I-A-B regular writes in about a post that was recently approved that might have crossed the line. The Mods respond.

CrakrJak: "Why not? The Japanese do it quite well with anime."

Actually, the Japanese don`t do the dubbing at all into English. The companies that license the anime do the dubbing, and often it`s quite awful.

One of my favorite anime had the lead actress` voice go from a sweet Japanese voice to a squeaky scratchy voice in the English dub. It`s horrific. This is why I prefer subtitles, nuances are often lost or destroyed in dubs.

I watch TONS of anime (see below), and with a little practice you get to the point where you barely even notice that you`re reading subtitles.

As for the video this thread is related to... meh. It`s just a movie clip.

I`m female and I thought it was hilarious. She obviously had something coming what with the nervous glances and the frequent hush-ups from the others around the table. If she were a man in that situation none of the people who are "offended" by it would have said boo. Double standards much? Listen, women fought for equality, so lets all be treated equally. That includes getting punched in the face when you`re berating a mentally unstable man.

Why not? The Japanese do it quite well with anime.
That`s better than having to rewind the video, and the subs distracting your attention from the actors performance.

The humour is in the shock value and the breaking of taboos, plus that we can all relate to the feeling of getting so frustrated with some fiddly task as well as the feeling when you want to shut some smug idiot up. I don`t see much wrong with this.

And I echo davy`s sentiments on comments. I very rarely delete comments, and I would guess >99% of the ones I`ve deleted are spam. I don`t think we should censor much here.

There would be no objection from anyone if that was a guy getting punched in the face for being a douch bag.

That made me LOL. Just because Fancy just tried to use that as an aside insult, and this guy wrote a great reply, better than many English as a first people.

As for the post, I`m with Gerry1of1.

I would personally never get offended by anything here on this site, cause I know it`s for entertainment purpose for those who are bored, if you are searching entertainment on a site where everyone is allowed to submit stuff, you can`t afford to be squemish.
We are all retards on some level or the other, but what has the world come to when you have to show violence like this to get a reaction of any kind?

Hey, I didn`t even know it had been approved, I`ve been quite out of touch with the net for some weeks now. I don`t remember if I wrote that exact headline as it is quite some time since I submitted it here. I can see how some would get offended by the clip in question, but this being the webz...and filled with so much crap, it gets hard to dig up stuff that gets a reaction from people that is more than "meh, I`m still bored".
This clip even out of context got someone out of the chair to write an mail to the mods, which I consider a great success somehow.
As for the girl in the film... she had it coming, as well as Torkil having a deep resentment of women in the film the outcome isn`t really in question.
I would never hurt a girl, but if you see the film then you`ll agree with me.
But having managed to offend someone on the internet to the point of writing the mods, I consider that a win. I personally would never get offended by anything here on the site, a

As for personal Mod policies, I spend most of my time patrolling the boards for spam/trolls etc and don`t approve much content. Call it laziness if you will, but I leave these things to the likes of Fancylad, Madest and Kitty who do a much better job than I do of finding great content and posting it here. Also, when I do approve a post, I rarely change the submitted title and/or description, unless it`s gramatically retarded.

And as for commenters, we have no control over that, nor should we. As long as someone`s not spamming, posting porn, consistently and desperately trolling, or posting hate-speech, then we don`t control that. We ain`t da po-lice, nor should we be.

As for content, IAB is an equal-opportunity insulter. We insult everybody.

Meh, like Fancy I just watched it for the first time. I was expecting some horrific bloody beating, but it was just a person getting punched in the nose by an apparently troubled other person. Sure, the person getting punched was a woman, but I fail to see the "crossing-the-line horror" in it... In fact, it relieved my boredom for a couple of seconds, as I certainly didn`t see it coming. Which is kinda what we`re trying to do here.

Someone referenced Tarantino earlier - true dat, Tarantino had a Jewish American GI (the Bear Jew) clubbing a German`s head in with a baseball bat. But yeah, it was an excellent movie overall, if I were offended by the content I wouldn`t have gone to see it. Just as I don`t click on some IAB links if I know I`m going to find them disgusting.

Maybe the title was misleading "BEst Movie Scene Ever". I don`t know if that was the original submitted title or not, though I suspect it was. We rarely change those.

i lol`d at the clip, some people need to grow the drat up and realize its a movie, an act. then comes the really big part about the comments, welcome to the internet author of the letter. hope you enjoy your time here.

p.s. if you want to see a really drated up movie go watch "The Feast" where a 9 year old kid watches his mother get rammed by an old drunk and later gets eaten, digested, and spewed up all over his mother by a monster. Also a woman gets orally raped by a monster while tied to a board and blown up. Its quite fascinating.

It should be ([]) not [()] as you put...ex: There are several different ways of beginning to write an essay (all of them equally helpful [Drew and Bingham, 2001]) and it depends on writers which they prefer. should I punch her in the face now and post it?

1000 character. This will be tough.
While the person who emailed the site was very respectful and made sure to phrase their email very carefully they could not be more disconnected to reality than someone completely and utterly batpoo insane.
My first point of contention would have to be that the clip was taken out of context. There is more than enough material there to show the woman teasing and berating the man to the point he felt ashamed. There are constant warnings from the other men at the table which also shows the man doing the hitting is unhinged.
Out of context...not so much.
Then there are the replies. Juvenile, sure; rude, of course; the internet, reality.
When we start trying to force our beliefs on others as far as what is right or what is wrong there will never be any winners. We`re all individuals clamoring for some sense of community. As more people are born every minute we have less and less space to be ourselves. We try to force ourselves to be...

The fact of the matter is that most of the stuff posted on this site is in bad taste. A lot of the content will offend people. Personally, I chuckled when I saw it and I do not approve of abuse. It may be that my sense of humor`s a bit off but it was an acted scene and I thought the offensiveness of it was funny. I also laughed at the characters dropping like flies in Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. Doesn`t mean I`m going to go on a murderous rampage. Political correctness doesn`t have a sense of humour.

Don`t know about the context. I totally sympathized with the woman in this scene. An interesting piece of art. Clearly the puncher was an unstable bad ass. All the other guys around the table obviously feared him. The victim in no way deserved the assault, but on the other hand I found her lack of situational awareness amusing and the outcome shocking and over the top. At least she wasn`t shot.

The movie it came from is gratuitously awesome. No question. And the scene is one of the best in the movie. But i do see how it, taken out of context, could seem offensive or anti-women`s rights etc.

Main point: Watch the movie !..

Comedy always walks a fine line,
raising you hand to waist level and saying "you must be this high to ride micheal" will make some people laugh and some people upset. some faggots will get real anal when i say " i always used to wonder why people get so uptight about someone being gay, then i worked it out, some of you guys can be a pain in the ass"
and yeah i can see why some people get upset over that, but i get upset when some dickhead shoves his god down my throat, or when i see someone hunting an animal for "sport". that`s life, and comedy is the one thing that breaches the subject for all of us. sometimes you cross the line, sometimes you walk it.

@ the author, be proud that you have morals, live by them, cherise them and make yourself the best person you can. that is all you can do, me? i don`t like violence, however, after my X made my life hell i do enjoy a good punch to the face, esp if the bitch looks like my x it releases some

You can either have the right to free speech or the right to not be offended, you can not have both. No matter what you say you are going to offend someone. It`s just going to happen. Trying to avoid that is a never ending battle in which the only victor is fascism.

Now, am I condoning the violence and antics of the post in question? No. But this a video clip from a movie, and it is words on a website. No single person was harmed. Every person involved in the making of the film, posting the content, and commenting on it, did it willingly with no real world consequences outside of hurting someones feelings.
Mainly because I hate subtitled movies, distracts from the actors performance.
I think subtitling is the least bad option available.

Remake: Very expensive, won`t be the same as the original.

Dubbing: Expensive, hugely detracts from the actors` performances, won`t correctly match the acting no matter how well it`s done, extremely difficult to do at all well and is usually done badly.

I greatly prefer subtitling because it leaves the original performance in place in its entirety. It`s not perfect because in addition to the problems inherent in translation you either have stuff missing or subtitles large enough to obscure the film, but it`s the least bad option.

I think the scene was disturbing, but I also think that was probably the point. The character is obviously unstable and dangerous. Presumably this scene is part of establishing that in the film.

I don`t think the clip crossed the line, but I think some of the comments did. But that`s the internet for you. The description didn`t sit well with me either.

I agree with Baalthazaq about this:

Actually, the best movie scene ever was in `Gone With The Wind` when Mammy is climbing the stairs, crying her eyes out describing the situation to Miss Mellie. Hattie McDaniels got an Oscar for that scene.

Or.... well how do yo pick "The Best". That`s one of the best, anyway.

I remember watching that movie, expecting the best movie scene ever, and just getting bored. But, hey, to each their own. Some people enjoyed the clip as it was (taken out of context), and even if it`s in bad taste, I think it`s OK for the IAB mods to post it and let people with bad taste enjoy it.

Is it offensive? Yup. But is it so offensive that it did not deserve to be greenlit? Meh, I dunno about that. If a lot of people here got enjoyment out of it, then I think it was worth posting.

It was funny because it is satirical. I am happily married and would be horrified if that was done infront of me, but its a movie, the author using the old school sexisms of society to give a backdrop to both the discussion and the period. Which brings you into the movie, and into the clip.
So yes it was funny, no I wouldn`t go punch my wife and tell her to `make me a sammich` because I enjoyed the clip, despite that being my comment. It was still funny, even if it was a man, or a little kid, or a puppet.

"I thought the whole clip was stupid. Mainly because I hate subtitled movies, distracts from the actors performance."

Just curious, what do you suggest? Dubbing? That can ruin the actors performance way more than subtitles. Or just only watch videos filmed in English? Then you miss out on a whole lot of excellent movies.

I watched subbed shows (dramas or variety shows usually) all the time, even more than I watch shows in English. You get used to the subs after some time. Usually in scenes with a lot of fast dialog, I`ll rewind and watch their faces a 2nd time (or pause to read), but it`s not a huge deal.

As for the actual clip, I was fine with it since she was obviously annoying him and he was obviously having some kind of issues. It`s not like it was her s.o. beating the poo out of her or anything. I wouldn`t call it the best scene though.

Guilty. I approved that clip for the shock value, nothing more. The title was off and I knew it when I posted it but I didn`t think Blinkende Lygter would have been any better. Besides, we all know that the best movie scene ever was when Vincent Vega revived Mia Wallace with an adrenaline shot to the heart! IAB would no more promote violence on women than suggest turning your boyfriend into a vampire. My personal apologies to anonymous for giving the appearance that we would.

I have to agree with cobra. It`s not the fact of her getting punched its the fact that she could not clearly see his reaction nor the "OH SH*T" reaction of the other guys. Then he finally blows.

Also, her style of laughter really adds to depth of the scene.

As someone else said, Would anon of complained if it was a guy laughing his ass off at him then getting punched?

I just found the fact that he was so infuriated that he couldn`t blow the egg, and then completely over-reacted when she laughed at him. It`s the whole childish nature of it that was funny imo, not the actual violence. Besides, no one complained at this movie clip which is so much worse on so many levels. Also, theres a big difference between a clip showing mild violence and a clip showing paedophilia.

Meh, not me.

There have been times I think IAB crossed the line, and I don`t think this is one of them for content.

As for titling... I`m not sure. We need to be clearer on whether the title should be seen as representative of IAB, or the submitter.

Some mods like to put up their own titles (in which case the OP gets blamed unnecessarily for bad titling), some leave it alone no matter how tempting it is to correct bad spelling, or make the title correctly represent the content (which means IAB looks like it supports the conclusion).

Calling that "The best movie scene" may have been sarcastic, but it doesn`t come across. All in all, I don`t think it should have been approved, simply because it wasn`t boredom curing enough.

I didnt approve it, but found it hilarious. It`s not the act of the man hitting the woman that made it so wonderful. It was the fact that she was antagonizing to the point that he broke, and took a nice swift swing in her direction.

Lets face it, we have all been in a situation where we really wanted to destroy somebodies face [and some of those times it is a woman that you despise] but do nothing about it. It is just fun to be able to see somebody else actually take the action that it is not okay for us to do in reality.
