Animals use that area`s scent to find out about one another`s signature and well-being. In this case it`s sort of like the elephant`s equivalent of a doctor using a stethoscope.

But don`t let this fool you, humans are the only creatures that feel loss, sadness, etc. and have a right to be treated special.

i would guess that what happends to fellow man usually gets blammed on mankind, but animal pain is something we shouldnt be responsible for and feel a different kind of sadness

ORGNCHEMST: I think you make a good point. I am often disgusted that people (especially internet people) pitch a huge f*cking fit about an animal getting killed, but barely bat an eyelash (or worse- say `Darwin Award` or `S/he deserved it`) when a person gets killed. I think it shows a terrifying lack of empathy and perspective on life.

We had two ferrets at our house. One of them developed severe cancer in a short time and we had to put him down. After the euthanasia, the vet`s assistant came to get the other to show him his deceased `brother`. She suggested that we stay there in the waiting room.

Afterwards, she brought the younger one back and told me that he had sniffed around the older one, then laid down next to him and closed his eyes for a short bit. After a minute or so, he got back up and wandered back over to the assistant, who picked him up and brought him back to us.

I`ve been around various non-human animals all my life. No one can convince me that (at least some) don`t have strong emotions.

And i think it shows that humanity has a lot to learn. you want my empathy? stop drating the world over. how gracious of you to feel sorry if a human dies, but what do you do to stop Hunger War and Disease? Thought so. take those crocodile tears and stop disgusting me, then i`ll feel sorry when you die, in the meantime that cow that got locked up raped and murderd so some fat first worlder can work on his diabetes while a third of the world lives in hunger is the one i feel sorry for. nothing she can do about it, you can. thats the Diff.

    There`s sunshine in my veins
    My kitchen`s filled with flies
    I`m crying out in vain
    Like a little African child.

    Trapped in me
    There`s an African child
    Trapped in me
There`s a little African child trapped in me.

All these rooms are cluttered with the spoils of my fame
My doors and windows shuttered I just can`t keep out the rain
    There`s sunshine down in hell
    My kitchen`s filled with flies
    I`m crying out for help
    Like a little African child.

    Trapped in me
    There`s an African child
    Trapped in me
There`s a little African child trapped in me.

    All these blowjobs in limousines
    What do they matters
    What do they mean
    To the little African child
    Trapped in me.

you having a go at me mate? i was just explaining why i don`t cry over (most) humans but do over animals, didn`t realise those shoes fit you as well.

as for what i do? i changend the way i eat, the way i dress, the way i treat people. you see the old way isn`t working so it`s on us to do what we have to do to survive.

MrOrange: I actually try to be a pretty socially responsible person. I`ve tried to do my part in helping the poor and less fortunate- I lived and volunteered in a teeny village in Zambia for almost a year helping people to build fish farms to feed their families. I was a live-in volunteer for 2 years at a homeless shelter in Chicago, and though I don`t live there anymore, I work an overnight shift once a week for the last 3 years. I have worked in the environmental social justice sector my whole life, and I plan to always live and work amongst less-privileged people.

I understand your frustration toward the average 1st world citizen... I feel ya, I really do. I have also changed a lot of my personal habits, and I encourage others to do the same. BUT- you may think me a hypocrite or self-righteous or whatever insult you choose to throw back at me... at the end of the day, I will mourn for a human`s death more than an animal`s. And I think that`s normal.

I tip my hat to you young lady, you sound like the person i would like to be i hope you enjoy it!
as for the insult there isn`t going to be one (i hope) i`m learning about emotional responses atm, the only thing i can say is.. there is no normal..
(a hot girl will provoke a response in males but not in females and vice versa((and before i get shot, on avarage ok?))
i`m perfectly happy with my emotional response (well, in most cases) but tend to get feisty if someone tells me i should feel otherwise.
Keep up the good work though, you will be one human i will cry over.

mrsdoctorwho: I love animals very much... I have an undergraduate degree in Fisheries and Wildlife and a master`s in Environmental Urban Planning... I plan to work for environmental justice my whole life and that`s how I show my love for the earth and the animals in it.

But- humans more than animals. Every time. It`s because I believe humans have souls, and that animals don`t. And if you don`t agree with that, that`s fine... it`s a very debatable situation. But I mourn for humans because they had families and friends that LOVED them. They had hopes, dreams, fears, secret wishes, and secret lovers, they could make people laugh and make them cry. And also I am one- I can relate to life and pain and loss and the general human condition... as ORGNCHEMST said: They are my brothers and sisters. Do I think human`s are worth more than animals? Yes.

Think about someone that you loved that has died, and then an animal that you`ve lost. Who would you ask to see one more time?

@DixxyRarr: It`s extremely distressing to hear from someone who might otherwise sound reasonably intelligent say that they don`t believe non-human animals have souls.

I try not to judge life based on value. Of course we humans *tend* to hold the lives of our fellow humans more dearly than the lives of other animals, but that doesn`t mean they truly are more valuable, or that it`s right. I`d be ashamed to say I believed so, if I did.

Anyone saying animal life is equal to human life in moral or spiritual value is pretty absurd, although that statement has nothing to do with this video.

It`s permissible to kill animals for humans to survive. It`s also permissible to kill plant life. I like animals as much as the next person, whether it`s at the zoo or on the dinner table, but I don`t believe in any womanish anthropomorphizing.
