Wow lots of people here are really excited about foreskin. I am circumcised, my kids probably will be as well. That said I don`t think that I have very strong feelings about it either way, I just want my kids to be like me so that they don`t have any issues growing up (why am I different (this happens)). Also I am a student in a psychiatric NP program and we are bludgeoned with the negative aspects of circumcision, then taught to not make moral judgements about female genital mutilation (I refuse to call it female circumcision).

It`s tradition in my area of the USA. Looks better to me. I`ll do it to my kid when i have one. Of course people love to force others to do or not do something because they think its wrong. Just suck it up and raise your own kid. thanks

^^ I can point you towards estimates of phimosis ^^

The rate for adult phimosis is 2% - 4% depending no who`s measuring. About half of these cases seek treatment. The rest seem blisfully unaffected.

The treatment for phimosis is gentle stretching with Betamethasone 0.05% - 0.1% ointment. If you can`t wait a few months for stretching to work the surgical remedy is "triple incision dorsal slit with transverse closure" which amutates nothing.

Circumcision has no place in a discussion about phimosis.

So...cutting part of a person`s genitals off because there`s a small chance they might later have a non-threatening and easily treatable medical condition.

Does that really sound like good medical practice to you?

Incidentally, the first figure I found in the UK was 0.6% and the highest figure I could find was 4.5%

You might not be aware that phimosis is *normal* in young boys. The foreskin is supposed to be attached to the glans for a couple of years. It can be pulled back with a bit of force...which makes infections much more likely, which makes harmful phimosis much more likely. Maybe that makes phimosis more common in the USA. Assuming you actually have evidence for your figures, of course.

Perhaps I too quickly assumed you`d be able to figure out the context of my words.

I say circumcision is good due to phimosis. You say may as well cut off ear lobes. I ask, do ear lobes get phimosis. You say I`m making things up...?

I can point you towards estimates of phimosis anywhere from 1% to 15% of the uncircumcised population. You`re not going to be able to talk you`re way out of the fact penis studies don`t really take place. Men frequently live with phimosis. The number is up in the air.

As to your question, the answer is no. You do it because, again, they`re not losing anything important, much like an earlobe, but they can be avoiding a "rare" medical condition.
And the "rare" (I really don`t think it`s all that rare. It`s just, it pertains to the penis so there`s hardly any solid surveys) earlobe condition that hinders a fun sex life?
Why are you asking me for evidence of something you`ve just made up?

As for adult phimosis, you can tell it`s rare by records of how many circumcisions are done for genuine medical reasons in countries that don`t have a custom of doing it for religious or cultural reasons. Go look for yourself - it`s not many.

But the fact remains that earlobes are much more useless than foreskins, since foreskins have a function and earlobes don`t.

So:

Are you OK with a parent cutting off a child`s earlobes solely because the parent wants to do so? State your reasons.

Or, of course, avoid the question and try to pretend that a medical reason is the same as a cultural custom stemming from a reason you don`t even agree with.

That`s my point. I haven`t and so it doesn`t matter. My orgasms still feel pretty awesome and it really doesn`t bother me.

Meh...here`s my take on the debate...it`s very unusual to have it done here these days. You have to hunt round to find someone who will do it for you. I have a son...he`s uncut. I figured it`s not my penis & not my decision to make. If he has issues later, we`ll deal with them then. If he wants to become circumcised, then all power to him but that`s his decision, not mine. Just like none of my daughers have pierced ears...different part of the body but, again, not my ears, so not my decision to make. They can make that (& have done) when they`re old enough to make an informed decision. My hubbie is uncut. No issues with health, hygiene, or anything else. Ever. My brothers are both cut. My mother regrets it & one of my brothers has really resented the fact he was circumcised at birth. Again...it all boils down to choice. He feels he has been robbed of that choice.

This being said I didn`t even know foreskins existed until I was about 13. The problem about being uncut and living in america is that you can really freak out some girls whipping your wiener out, as most girls here haven`t seen an uncut one. I have a buddy who`s had this negatively affect his sex life, so maybe if you`re in america it is worth it to get circumcised, unless you want to try and change the whole cultures view on circumcision.

Really though, I don`t think it makes much of a difference either way.

Don`t be silly.

You have just argued the following:

i) A part of the body that is internal and has developed a different form of protection from abrasion would become calloused if deprived of the form of protection that it doesn`t have and isn`t meant to have.

ii) That an external part of the body that has developed to use a particular form of protection should become calloused if it does have that form of protection.

You`re not making any sense at all.

A foreskin protects the penile glans.

If the foreskin isn`t there and nothing replaces it, the penile glans must be toughened to protect it - callousing. Far less so than on skin, but still there.
Anyway, yes Angillion. That`s exactly what I was saying. It`s a pointless piece of skin that neither hinder`s nor benefits anyone at any point in their lives, until, on rare occasion, it does negatively affect their life.
i) That`s not true. It serves a purpose. Sure, it`s not essential and you can function without it, but that doesn`t mean it`s pointless.

ii) The same argument could be made for many parts of the body, but it would still be illegal in the USA to cut those parts off of babies because you want to. It is, for example, far more true of earlobes. They actually are pointless, in that they have no bodily function.

All this made me think about is how I`m married and I`ve had sex once in the last year.

Oh yeah, and circumcision needs to be outlawed until the man is 18 and can make the decision for himself.

"Is this true? If so, I did not know that... why is it the case?"

It started out as a way to stop guys from masturbating (surprise! it didn`t work, it just made it not feel quite as good, though guys who have been cut from birth wont notice a difference) and I guess it`s kind of mentioned in the bible so it was justified that way. Now people spread lies saying being uncut is unsanitary and that there`s a reduction of STDs for cut guys (without statistics to back them up, there`s really hardly any difference), or use the whole "but it hurts a lot worse if it`s cut later in life so let`s just do it before we know whether or not there`s going to be an issue with it".

Most of all, it`s done out of tradition. I have some friends with sons who decided to get them cut only so that they`ll "look like their dad" or because the dad wanted it.

Sex releases the chemicals in the brain, it`s not the sperm. The foreskin actually produces nothing once so ever, it`s a piece of skin to protect the end, it makes to difference if it`s there or not.

As for attraction, it`s the scent of musk released from the skin that causes it. This is too stupid for me, I can`t finish it.

I am so glad I didn`t have my dick mutilated when I was a baby. All that crap about it smelling or "cheese dick" is laughable. I imagine that must happen after about 30 days of not showering. And I can`t imagine how lifeless the head of the penis would be after a lifetime of rubbing up on denim and basically building up a callus to toughen it up to all the constant friction. Ouch.

"Cheesy penis europeans are funny. Are you anti removing wisdom teeth and appendixes also?"

Are appendixes frequently removed at birth, or when it`s not harming the person? I still have mine.

Are wisdom teeth removed the second they come in, regardless of if they`re causing discomfort? I`ve still got my wisdom teeth; I was fortunate enough to not grow in some molars and my mouth had appropriate room for my wisdom teeth.

Removing something that has an actual function at birth "just in case" there`s issues with it in the future is ridiculous.

It comes down to this:

The original reason for cutting parts of boys` dicks off in the USA was that it was believed to stop them masturbating later in life. That was the WHOLE AND SOLE reason.

The current reason for cutting parts of boys` dicks off in the USA is that it`s a custom. Like many other mutilating customs in other cultures - it`s done because it`s done. Some advocates of some of those other customs of mutilation think it`s a hygeine issue, too, particularly the directly comparable custom of cutting off a girl`s clitoral hood and part of her labia. It`s the closest possible biological and sociological comparison - comparable degree of mutilation, comparable reasons for it.

I`m past 40. I`m bisexual. Do you really think I wouldn`t have noticed if my dick and all the others I`ve seen up close and personal were stinking and infected?

No, it is not an issue. Unless you never wash, in which case you`re going to stink anyway, cut dick or whole dick.

With legs? Dude, that`s a weird idea.

That`s a flattering picture of a naked mole rat. They`re ugly, ugly, ugly things...and possibly the most important animal on Earth to humans. They`re a perfect example of why we really should try to ensure animals don`t go extinct unnecessarily. They seemed useless to humans and they`re not cute, so if they had become extinct it probably wouldn`t even have been noticed. "Save the ugly rat thing" would have been a hard campaign. But they might hold the key to a cure for all forms of cancer (they`re immune to all forms of cancer) and a hugely extended life without aging for almost all of it (they live ~7 times as long as expected and don`t age for most of their adult life), and that`s really rather useful.

You`ve been told some rubbish.

If you never wash it, your dick will get smelly and you might be more likely to get some sort of infection. But that`s true whether it`s whole or cut.

If you wash normally, it`s not an issue. Maybe, just maybe, it adds possibly as much as 5 seconds to shower time. Woo.

@jamie76 The only way your last fact could possibly be true is if:

1.Uncircumcised men get a lot more sex.
2.The massive majority of HIV cases come in the developing world, who despite having a fondness for mutilating themselves in weird and wonderful ways, still have enough sense not to chop off part of their dick, because cutting off part of you dick is drating demented.
OR 3. Both.

Basically, you get a STD by drating someone else with a STD. It doesn`t matter whether or not you have a turtleneck.

but really - would girls break up with a guy that has the tip snipped? like i can`t put mine back on, it was removed as a baby. other`s have problems and it has to be removed.

the girl can have all the theories she wants, but many are just has happy with a condom on and that removes all the theories at once. oxytocin is released when people touch and orgasm is achieved - skin or not. the top will retain moisture because it`s pretty much a straw, but that`s a bad thing because that leads to infections and a mighty stench, or so i`m told.

knowing why it`s done is a pointless exercise unless your going into a clinical research before you even say hi to the guy.

wellllll probably not. foreskin may have served a pupose at one time but as humans changed it became less important.

also, uncut men have a MUCH MUCH higher chance of contracting STD, especially HIV.

Two new parents are approached at the maternity ward by the attending physician with some bad news.

"We`ve run some tests and your baby boy is perfectly healthy--ten fingers, ten toes. Except... except he has no eyelids."

"Oh my God!" the parents say.

"But don`t worry," the doctor says. "I`ve been reading up on a new procedure that I think may solve our problem. It involves grafting small pieces of the infant`s foreskin onto the muscles just above the eyes."

"That will work?" the parents ask, hopefully.

"Yes... but there`s one risk. Whenever your son gets aroused, there`s a slight chance he could become c@ckeyed."

You don`t "prove" things in science, missy. You conduct studies to determine what ISN`T happening, and then you throw in support for the more likely alternative. This alternative, however, is still potentially wrong.

That`s why just about every sciece-related article in the mainstream news is ridiculous ("SCIENCE PROVES EATING PIZZA IS BETTER FOR YOU THAN WATER?!?!?!"). They take implications of single studies and try to present them as fact, because it will sell better.
