They`re not all pronounced differently. Mandarin has 4 tones and cantonese has 9. This is mandarin transliteration and has only 4 tones. Chinese relies heavily on context and word combinations for meaning. It makes it hard to explain precise matters and specifications unless you are extremely adept. There are a great many standard characters, many of which can be written in traditional or simplified style (they have less strokes) and many more ways of writing something if you have the scholarly training. There`s hundreds if not a thousand characters to express longevity. That`s why it`s hard to get beyond baby talk and even harder to appear well-read. I never got beyond baby talk despite decades of trying and many years of immersion.

i think "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo" is the best English has.

Chinese is done more with tone and pitch than actual words, so the little "translation" it initially provides is about as useful as a shot glass in a forest fire. There was a post a while back about "Why English sucks" that contained different sentences that used homonyms and homophones. If that`s why English sucks, then Chinese is down right stupid.

Not that hard once you learn the language, I promise. Note that most chinese people have an extremely hard time with english or other languages.

James, while John had had "had", had had "had had"; "had had" had had a better effect on the teacher.

They`re all pronounced differently. That`s what all the different accent marks are for. Pronunciation is a huge part of asian languages.

we don`t need to decipher their language.....we figured out how to make a nuclear bomb first, ergo we won, and continue to win.

@i rule you
"If we can`t decode their language"
Did you miss the whole part where it is translated?

Ironic name BTW

also
Each word has an accent mark that corresponds to a different pronunciation called a tone, making each word different, and different combinations can also affect the meaning. It is not obvious to someone who does not understand Chinese, but not impossible.

Well they own 8% of your debt, so maybe the reason they can`t afford to is because you won`t pay up.

I tried to learn Chinese once, and was then faced with this particular difficulty. One area in which most other languages seem vastly easier...

Though this is a good example of why Chinese people shouldn`t switch to pinyin.

What`s the point of this? If you don`t speak a language obviously you aren`t going to understand it. I`m learning Mandarin myself and I`m not the first so I don`t understand why the desc says "can`t" when we very much have the ability to, it just takes time.

This story would most likely be confusing to even a native speaker if it was read out loud. Usually they add in more words when they speak to clarify in cases where it`s not clear which word they`re saying. That`s not necessary in writing because as you can see, the characters are different even if they are pronounced similarly.
