Corporations and the government have been trying to get their dirty grubby hands on control of the internet for over a decade now.

It`s no surprise that they`d use underhanded ways to profit from both sides and then use that ill-gotten money to lobby for SOPA.

This is akin to Phillip-Morris suing people for smoking cigarettes and then trying to pass a law saying they would get complete control over cigarette sales, to ensure only their cigarettes could be sold.

What I don`t get is where exactly in the downloading of content are you supposed to see a copyright notice?

it is interesting and all, and it does make some kind of sense. however, once cnet or whoever takes over the net - then what? what do they do with it?

i also wonder if the congress people even think how this will effect them - i`m sure they are guilty as well. and would it hold up in court? especially if everyone is guilty in some way?

It`s a high level scam, they happen a lot more than we think they do.

In this case, they give us the tools to download, than sue us when we do. If SOPA passes it will just speed up the whole process of suing people. I would have to go look it up again, I think one girl was charged around 25k per song as damages. So they think a 99cent song from itunes is worth 25k of business to them, and they get it. It`s huge revenue for them, of course they will do it if they can, it`s perfectly legal.

Control over the internet would be huge money, people would have to pay for faster access. Not the people, the websites would have too. So Google would run like lightning, and I-A-B would run like sludge, if it isn`t shut down first.

As soon as this is passed, I will be bringing SOPA actions against all the media companies and get them shut the heck down. Everyone should do the same. Shut down the media companies.

Haha. SOPA. I don`t think it will spread past the US if it passes. Yes other people will be affected, but the US doesn`t have authority over the world`s internet.

That`s IF it passes. I don`t think it will... there is too much force against it. But that`s just me the optimist.

I wasn`t debating the morality of piracy. I was saying I`m not using piracy software because I was tricked by giant corporations. I do it because it`s what technology has enabled me to do. And the corporations didn`t create the software, they merely invested to profit from it.

Let me summarise Mr Manners. "I`m going to say it`s ok to steal from musicians cos I`m lazy"

Still a thief mate, and from artists too. Nice one, you must be proud

Settle down Mr.Smee.

So the very people who hire, promote, record, sign, distribute and sell artists are the very same people who cause piracy?

No. They may have gotten their hands dirty by trying to profit from it, but they are not the cause of piracy. The cause of piracy is the extravagant price I`m charged for a CD when all I want is one song. The cause of piracy is that it`s so much more convenient for me to download the entire Rush discography than to go out and buy $200 worth of CD`s that will get scratched after 6 months in the bottom of my closet.

Piracy was caused by the music industry creating too much music for people to be able to keep up with. And with the medium of tape decks dying out, making mixed tapes by recording the radio isn`t as cool as it once was.
