Wow, so many people who hate smiling in here. Screw you all, I look forward to living longer than you and spreading joy with my smile.

It carries a good message, but I think to be truely effective it should counteract the arguement with the benefits and detriments of frowning (as well as the spectrum of all facial expressions that can be typically created)

In evolutionary terms, we wouldn`t have inhereted any of these traits if they hadn`t served some sort of purpose to our survival at any given time in the past lives of our ancestors.

Also I`d question the advice given by anyone who says simply to `smile` and things will get better. as smiling when you aren`t happy can actually cause adverse effects due to the supression of your genuine emotions.

tl;dr It`s not about your smiling, it`s about what you`re thinking (it`s just if what your thinking genuinely makes you smile, it can be transferred across into other minds)

TED used to have serious talks from real scientists. Lately they have just completely devolved into the mindless drivel shown here. Why? It`s like anything "science" automatically gets dumbed-down to "stupid" - WHO THE HELL KEEPS DOING THIS???

When he was talking about Obama`s picture it sounded like he said "super color" not "super collar"...

Smilology is the new phrenology. TED must stand for "Marketing To Hipsters"

sorry, but that was really stupid. basing all the facts on a handful of people. equating cash to happiness, ridiculous. i don`t trust anyone that smiles too much, it usually means they are hiding something, and i`m usually right. i thought this was going to be a comedy routine not a TED speech.

look at george burns, i don`t really remember him smiling that much, he smoked like a chimney, died at 100. smiles don`t mean your more successful, having skills will. did they do a study to see how other people did smile`s or not? i didn`t see that. mimicking a smile cannot tell someone thats real or not. i don`t smile, it hurts my face, i have no reason too, yet i can do a bunch of things.

who would fund such a study? useless...

TED has always seemed like a hipster scum gathering to me. However I`ve heard some very interesting things from them.

Well, the whole "intellectual" thing TED tries to promote just went down the toilet. What a pile of poo. Why not just talk about how much of your personality you can find out the way you eat an Oreo cookie?
