@Cenya:
Burying your head in the sand is probably the worst thing you can do when your rights are slowly being taken away as they are right now. You still have a lot to learn about life kid.

I literally give no f*cks. Not a single f*ck; when a republican is in power people go ape poo, when a democrat is in power people go ape poo and then some. I`m 20 and have weathered so many of these one sided vids in my short life that as of today I`ve decided to no longer even bother playing them. The title itself just exudes "I TOLD YOU NOT TO VOTE FOR HIM!" Seriously, crap like this was around for Bush, and I can even remember this crap on Clinton! I GIVE NOT A SINGLE F*CK. It`s 2012, people my age are just trying to live to see the next Spring Break. Seriously if this was so important it would somehow make it`s way to me through the lil bits I grasp from my professors. The chances this is just one-sided bs is uber high. I HATE THE INTERNET TODAY.

They do want Canadian oil, they`re probably the largest force pushing us to develop tar sands.

This seriously made me lol. A better question would be if you know anything about anywhere outside the US.

@TheShng2: YES! As a matter of fact, we Canadians are VERY much aware of y`all down south, eh? Whatever you do, the Canuk gov`t will soon copy, it`s a fact! Especially if it`s bad/stupid.
Also, there`s tons of coverage of everything American, since Canadian politics is very boring.

@ramdomnxp: Except this now applies to American Citizens ON American soil. Goodbye US Constitution! Hello ObamaReich!

Errrrmmmm ... hate to say this but there has always been a right to detain enemy combatants indefinitely. The only change here is to allow the US military to act on US soil.

So this is off topic and possibly offensive, but I see that a lot of Canadians and a few Australians have commented and seem to know a lot about American history/politics. How? I know almost literally nothing about Canada or Australia. Is it common to know that much about America in other countries?

@madest: We`re trying! But your Prez Obama won`t let Keystone go through! He won`t drill for American oil, in violation of a court order btw, and he doesn`t want Canadian oil. Obama only likes nice, clean ARABIC oil! (/sarc)

@Cajun, which notions?

Sadly, Cenk Uygur (pron. jank YOO-grr) speaks the truth. He usually does.

For any fellow progressives/liberals out there, I highly recommend subscribing to his YouTube channel (The Young Turks).

@korahn: Of course there is a double-standard. The Constitution only applies within the borders of the US. That`s why it`s called the "US" Constitution.

Here`s hoping he won`t get voted in a second term. The way I hear it, most presidents get re-elected unless they F-up big time. Though I haven`t seen anyone better running in the poles, so he most likely will make a second term. You have my sympathy America.

@ Baalthazaq - Or can I just call you Baal for short? No evil connotations intended.

So, Baal, it`s time to admit it: Obama = Suck.
You are right that he doesn`t suck as much as Bush, but that`s not exactly a high mark of achievement. Bush started shreading the constitution and Obama is finishing the job.

Rep vs Dems... both are guildty. 43 and 49? BOTH are guilty.

So what I understood is that there was a bill that allowed foreign enemies to be detained, which was OK, but adding that US citizen enemies can also be detained now makes it unconstitutional? Seems like there is a double-standard here somewhere.

Baalthy:
#1: Barak signed it, so it`s BUSH`S bill! Obviously!
#2 Ignore the past, and also ignore the present! Bush = bad!
#3: 49 Dems < 43 Repubs. It`s obvious!
#4 McCain voted, then died. Oh how appropo!

@Cajun: You see? It`s exactly what I said: The left accuses the right of wanting it, but THEY THEMSELVES push it through.
You see what you said? "Bush wanted it" but WHO pushed it through? Barak Obama, that`s whom. And the MSm remains... silent!

@Baalthy: OH! I see, Barak signs it... but Bush is to blame! Oh so OBVIOUS!
You`re a dratnot, not worth a drat eh?

It`s NOT a Democrat bill: 49 Dems, 43 Reps.
Oh, yes, obviously! If MORE Democrats support it, it MUST be a Republican bill!
You`ve really lost it @Baalthy, I`m capturing this for future castigation!

Wow.. I really just don`t care about politics at all. I mean this is obviously a pretty juicy subject and you all have plenty of neat things to say, but all I can think to myself is "this is so terribly boring, and I don`t care about any of it". Wish I did, but I`m seriously not interested. Back to D&D where the politics involve my sword through an evil prince`s face.
Rev Wright? Bill Ayers? School records?
None of those had anything to do with being a power hungry executive. They were silly distractions. Bush was pushing for this sort of a thing and he had his school records presented.

5 Cats:
1) This isn`t Barack`s Bill. This is an extension of a Bush concept, making law, what Bush falsely claimed he could do anyway.

2) All the things you said, are still false. The socialist claim is false. Bill Ayers, and Rev Wright are still as meaningless as the birth certificate nonsense.

3) This is not a Democrat bill. This is 43 Reps, and 49 Dems, with 7 abstaining (3 reps, 3 dems, 1 independent. If you want to claim credit for DADT because 8 reps and 40-somethings Dems voted for it. You claim it on a 43-49 split.

4) McCain voted Yea. (See?! We told you he`d die before the end of the term!... oh wait do bad policies not make stupid assertions correct?)

5) TYT Critical from early on. Not "3+ years" too late.

Obama signed it today, his last official act of 2011.

But, I don`t think this is "Obama". Bush started it with the Patriot Act, Obama continued it with this. I don`t know who`s pulling the string behind the curtain, but someone is and both Dems and Reps are doing as told. We have no hope.

1:32 President All Bomb Up. Close caption ftw!
WE TOLD YOU SO! We righties said: he`s a power-mad socialist, he`ll do bad things!
Here we are, right as ever, sadly. Are all you lefties who supported BHO happy now? No internet freedom, no personal freedom, happy now?

iirc: TYT viciously attacked McCain & Palin, while ignoring ALL the serious questions about BHO. Rev Wright? Bill Ayers? School records? None of those things mattered to the left.

4:49 He asks: Where are the activists? Where is the left? Where are the Democrats?
You`re 3+ years late in those questions, cousin.

I`ve been saying for years now: the left "actually does" evil that they accuse the right of "wanting to do".

Yes, TYT (and Cenk) are liberals. This clip is from Current TV, a specifically liberal channel that also host other ex MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann, Current is currently run by Al Gore.

So this is definitely not "right wing smear" directed at Obama. However, liberals/progressives aren`t necessarily Democrats, and have never gone easy on the President.

Having said that, there have since been statements from the whitehouse about the bill confirming the reasoning behind earlier lack of support, and current support for the bill.

Senators that voted here.

That was on final wording. The bill passed with a further 7 votes.

I will admit to being only moderately aware of the detention clauses in this bill. Having said that, I do not believe that is what section 1032 actually says. Instead, what it allows the president`s adminstration the power to do is to TRANSFER suspected terrorists FROM military custody TO civilian custody. However, Obama himself has admitted that this essentially codifies the power to the executive branch that would allow indefinite detention through military custody.

Sorry, got cut off. Anyway, the President would be able to decide who is an "enemy combatant" and then detain them, without trial, INDEFINITELY, for as long as he wanted to. That is illegal and sickening. Sounds like something you hear about happening in North Korea or Cuba or Saddam-era Iraq.

No President should have that power. No matter the party affiliation. For all our sakes, I hope that Senator is full of it.

A couple things I would like to point out:

1. This man seems to be a Democrat. He seemed very critical of the Republican party, and also - if I`m not mistaken - referred to the Democrats as "we/us". So don`t dismiss him as a Limbaugh-wannabe.

2. The Senator who claims Obama specifically requested to leave in the part about being this applying to American citizens within our borders? He was a Democrat.

So we can safely rule out that these are right-wing people who take any opportunity to criticize Obama.

With that being said, I am absolutely appalled that this bill is being considered to pass. A bill that makes it legal for the military to decide who is an enemy combatant, and detain said person indefinitely without a trial... it`s disturbing. Oh, and don`t forget: who is the Commander in Chief of the military? The President. So essentially, if this bill passes, the President will be able to decide who is an "enemy" and then have

Utterly ridiculous. These very angry men are so lost that the opposite position on every issue that the President Obama takes is the one vehemently undertake. It’s crazy and scary to think that there are so many of loose cannons running around never mind running and ruining congress, or running for the highest office. Hey angry guys Go back to the 1940’s why don’t you.

@ggolbez Agreed. I don`t see Obama supporting this but if he is he needs to be stopped.

On a different note, how did this even get through the Senate in the first place? It`s disgusting and to my knowledge explicitly illegal, no matter what the Constitution says.

But this is all conjecture, no proof or sources.

Lincoln suspended habeas corpus, FDR threatened to pack the Supreme Court and then institutionalized a form of socialism, and Truman flipped unions the bird.

The Constitution is a piece of paper. It can be read to mean almost anything (and if you don`t believe me, see opinions Dred Scott v sanford, Bowers v Hardwick, Wickard v Filburn, ANYTHING Justice Scalia has dissented in...)

Shredding your rights? Pffft. What rights?
