Ooooops.

lulz.

Mythbusters has always sucked, and considering I`ve never even seen the show, that`s saying a lot.
I don`t know how it`s possible that a cannonball could have enough momentum to travel that far, rip through a concrete wall, then through a WHOLE HOUSE, off someone`s roof, bounce across the road, and through a minivan. WTF did they load that thing with? Uranium?
A full size cannonball at 1000fps has about as much kinetic energy as a car travelling at 95 mph. But the force of impact would be over a far smaller area (so far higher pressure) and the ball is far more solid than the car.

Numbers, so you can see I`m not just pulling it out of the air:

1000fps = 304.8 m/s
Mass of ball = 42 lbs = ~19Kg.

KE of ball = ~880 KJ

95mph = ~42.5 m/s
Mass of car = 1000Kg

KE of car = ~900 KJ.
Male 12,365
traveling at 1000f/ps a 2kg cannon ball would weigh 600kg..
kg is a unit of mass, not weight. So what did you actually mean? 1000fps is nowhere near close enough for relatavistic effects to be of any relevance, so the 2Kg ball will still have a mass of 2Kg.

The equivalent of a 600Kg ball dropped 1m in average Earth gravity, maybe?
Male 2,988
You can`t get rid of MythBusters! You already took away NASA, what else will keep the generations to come interested in science?
Male 2,376
"She thought it was a falling tree...or a meteorite" hahahahah

umm either of those ar emore likely to happen then a cannon ball? whast so funny.. is it cause he was asian you think hes dumb?
Male 14,334
Then try breaking it over your head!! A real sheet not tiny strips. Cannon balls were used to destroy castles too so it would go through houses anywhere.
Male 721
plywood?!?! that stuff is easy to break. you know they used cannon balls to sink ships? traveling at 1000f/ps a 2kg cannon ball would weigh 600kg.. houses made out of bits of sheet board wouldnt stand a chance, hense why it happened...
Male 14,334
@Steelgrid

U MAD BRO?!?!?! Yes but they also have these things called firing ranges that use the power of angles to stop projectiles with burms. Notice I said firing range not bomb sounds like there`s differences otherwise they wouldn`t have had to rely on water barrels and a wall to stop it.

@JoeYC

Male 721
The ball was traveling around 1000 feet per second. american houses are made from cardboard lol. it would go though.
Male 4,902
@5Cats, there was most likely some sort of controlled demolition also. Walls don`t just have holes in them like that, there had to be some sort of weakening of the structure beforehand.
Male 104
science show... not so much. More like "blowing and shooting stuff up show". If someone were hit by that cannonball they would be transformed into a pulp. Dont need muthbusters to figure that out!
Male 718
Well. it was a nice show while it lasted. but the fragilians are gonna make sure its gone for good (by the way, a fragillian is a person of fragile nature. also known as a pussy)
Male 675
I`m gonna be so mad if they don`t air this episode.
Male 2,513
Just hope they air that experiment
Male 1,810
@Angilion - in addition to their use against castles, they were used on the battlefield against enemy troops/cavalry. Just point in the direction of said enemy, fire, and the skipping cannonball plowed down (killing, maiming) everything in its path. This actually turned out better than expected for the Mythbusters people...nobody was hurt or worse.
Male 14,835
"And that was just the first house it struck."

"This myth was supposed to discover whether other materials shot out of a cannon would be just as effective as a cannon ball"

Oh... My... Godzilla
Male 571
I don`t know how it`s possible that a cannonball could have enough momentum to travel that far, rip through a concrete wall, then through a WHOLE HOUSE, off someone`s roof, bounce across the road, and through a minivan. WTF did they load that thing with? Uranium?
Male 2,790
i really hope they air that
Male 2,700
@Steelgrid

Don`t be butthurt I like Mythbusters too. If I myself were to test a high powered cannon though I`d go to say a big desert and shoot it as far as I want there just a thought....

First off you stupid fvuck, its not about wiether or not I like the show. Its about dumbasses like yourself placing blame where it doesnt belong.

Also, LOOK AT THE PICTURE OF THE BOMB RANGE!!!!! its huge. They had preparations for it. A fence, and concrete wall, AND water barrels.

It is a huge bomb range. but guess what, BOMBRANGES END!!!! They dont last for-fvucking-ever. They do in fact stop somewhere, this side happens to stop by a neighborhood. Again I tell you to pay attention and realize that is is a CIRCUMSTANCE. Un avoidable. They fired from one end, the 2 previous shots worked just fine. The third shot simply misfired.
Male 48
"i looked inside and there was a big...cannon ball..."
Male 10,855

Don`t worry dear friend, I believe you.

<Snickers wildly>

Male 87
so you are supposed to get your car towed when your window breaks?
Male 4,431
5Cats, I give you +5 Interwebz for that one. :-) I wish we had thumbs for posts here. :-)
Male 37,826
What? Only one cannonball did all that damage? I think there was a second cannon, perhaps on a grassy knoll nearby, that really caused most of the destruction!

(j/k! Just in case you think I`m THAT kookie!)
(I`m not, honest!)
Male 2
this is crazy; I live right around here.
Had the cannon ball been fired like 1 more degree to the south, it would have crashed into our megasuperplex (`merica) or even onto i580.
Male 216
as punishment adam and jamie should go to jail and Kari Byron should pose for playboy, u dont agree with me!? ask chuck norris!!!! YEAH!!!
Male 12,365
"She thought it was a falling tree...or a meteorite" hahahahah
To be fair, those would probably be my first thoughts if something hit the roof of my house.

Well, not the tree because there aren`t any near my house, but it`s not an unreasonable first thought if there are.
Female 3,696
"She thought it was a falling tree...or a meteorite" hahahahah
Male 12,365
i think that`s how her name is spelled?
Kari.
Male 519
@Angilion My guess is that it used to be in the middle of nowhere when it was built. They said it is located on Camp Parks, an army reserve base. So the range has probably been there for decades, while the land around the base has slowly been bought and developed.
Male 69
They will pay the damages and everything will be fine.
Male 255
i think repayment to the public should be rendered in the form of nude photos of Care Byron (i think that`s how her name is spelled?)
Male 12,365
Remember kids they`re what you call experts.....
But not in everything.

They are sensible enough to hire experts in relevant fields, though. They would have had explosives experts involved, people who know their poo.

There`s a degree of inaccuracy inherent in cannons. This shot missed the energy-absorbing barrier they`d put up. Two previous shots done the same way had hit it.

The real mistake is the positioning of the bomb range. Although it could reasonably be argued that they should have realised beforehand that made it an unsuitable location for the experiment.
Male 2,700
I like how some of you are tossing out veiled insults. No one is perfect jackasses. Experts in the field can still make mistakes and from the actual story, there was nothing they could have done. It was the third shot that day, just hit with a bad bounce. No matter how good you are at something, some things are unavoidable.

I mean really McGovern, what are you trying to accomplish with that little mockery of a comment? Do you think you could do better? Hmmmm?

I mean seriously, see it for what it is, a CIRCUMSTANCE!!! Not a product of poor professionalism.
Male 496
Now they can disprove the myth that they will not get sued if one of their experiments goes awry and damages private property!
Male 2,700
Wowo I cant WAIT to see this episode. I want to see the reaction as their show is about to put up several 100 thousand worth of insurance payments!!!
Male 12,365
Wow..I`m surprised it did all of that lol
Cannons were designed to ruin castles, which had hard stone walls yards thick. At full force, you could probably fire one straight through a couple of dozen modern houses, with their thin walls designed to be only as strong as necessary for keeping the house up. Probably without slowing the ball down much.

Hey! There`s a new myth to be tested.

This damage was from a *bounce*. So the ball had already lost most of its kinetic energy to the ground.
Male 12,365
I thought that the bomb range (which they use a lot in Mythbusters) was in the middle of nowhere. It looks that way on the TV and if I was making a bomb range I`d put it in the middle of nowhere. Because it`s a bomb range. Surely putting it in the middle of nowhere is an obvious thing to do? It`s not like you`re short of space in the USA or short of transport. I`d put bomb ranges several miles from anywhere and have people drive to them.

Proper safety protocols or not, if you`re doing live firing of artillery a few hundred yards from a densely populated area, sooner or later people will be killed. The real proper safety protocol should be to do the firing *outside of the range of anywhere anyone lives*.
Male 4,793
"Why would you want to live that close to a bomb range anyway? "

I`m bored today.. what do do.. Ooh! I`ll walk over to the bomb range and blow poo up! That is why.
Male 1,429
According to a statement on http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/12/07/mythbusters-cannonball-statement/ All proper safety protocols were adhered to and that the accident was due to an unforeseen "unfortunate bounce."

Why would you want to live that close to a bomb range anyway?
Male 163
cant wait to see that episode
Male 2,690
Wow..I`m surprised it did all of that lol
Male 312
I`m sure they won`t be cancelled, they will just have to take better safety measures.

In their...how many years running? This is their first major uncontrolled accident. Tory is their minor uncontrolled accident.
Male 3,301
For science!
Male 506
"Nearly killing people while they sleep is always an option"
Male 17,512
Even `The Experts` can have a bad day. I`m sure they will make amends, Adam & Jamie won`t be canceled.
Male 10,855
@Gerry

Wrong part of the world dude
Male 14,334
Remember kids they`re what you call experts.....
Male 38,498

Myth Busted! There are no actual Irish people in Dublin!

Female 857
Mythbusters busted!
Male 10,440
If they cancel mythbusters, I will kill everything.
Male 1,471
Oh no :/.. They`re gonna cancel Mythbusters :/.. My life is over...
Male 10,855
Was it the original duo or the build team?
Male 376
When/if they show this episode it will get the most viewers ever.
Male 687
-knock knock!
-who`s there?
-BOOOOOOOOM!
Male 55
What a great idea! Lets shoot cannonballs towards those houses over there!
Male 312
lol @ jav805

Myth Confirmed.

Adam is not going to admit anything, he`s going to reject reality and substitute his own.
Male 104
Well, there`s yer problem.
