Good example of when the comments posted here, are more interesting than the post itself. The trolling, the rants, the isms, and of cource - it`s not really a debate if the ole` "your`e so typical liberal/conservative" hasn`t come up, and after we do the political thing sexual orientations is most definately an argument, and you know we are about to wrap this baby up when all the ranting has turned into "toilet- store" insults, and one- liners about taking it up the a55 :-)

Crakrjak: "That kid should go to bed with no dinner after a disrespectful salute like that.
If I had ever done that it would`ve been followed up with a quick backhand to the face and likely return of all my Christmas presents to the store as well.
When did this sort of poo behavior become `cute` ?"

Magickrat - "I think what you`re missing is that this was just a simple picture taken all in good fun."

How do you know? Did you take it? Maybe it was sent to her estranged father as a hurtful move by her mother.

Gerry - "If you can`t understand automatically why it`s bad, you never will so I won`t waste time explaining it. Sufice it to say 10 years from now you will be wondering where your kid went wrong."

Sometimes kids can overcome the obstacle of horrible parenting.

I have a two year old and I wouldn`t dream of taking a picture of him like this. It`s not that I`m uptight; we have all kinds of fun: Coloring, playing "seek", jumping on the bed, reading stories, scaring the crap out of each other jumping out from behind things. You know, fun. Getting him to flip the bird doesn`t sound like fun to me.
I`m sure no two people parent the same and what is right in my mind is not right in others, and that`s fine. As long as hate and disrespect is not being taught, power to you.
Here is my question about this picture: was this girl taught the gesture she is making is rude in our society? Or will she just remember "Mom took a picture of me doing this and thought it was funny. I should do it to everyone."

If it were the former, fine. To each their own. If it`s the latter, bad parenting.
it`s an obvious truism
no, it`s a point of view
You`ve decided, aparently, that encouraging kids to act rudely and like little gangsters is okay
and you`ve apparently decided that a harmless photo op is going to turn the kid into a horrible person

it seems like you didn`t understand what i said about context before. i`m betting the parent`s wouldn`t be ok with the girl telling them to f*ck off.
what you can`t seem to understand is that people do learn context eg> swearing in front of friends as apposed to parents

maybe she`s gonna be a bitch when she`s a teen but i`m damn sure it`s not going to be because of something as trivial as this

I think what you`re missing is that this was just a simple picture taken all in good fun. It doesn`t mean this kid is going to become a serial killer or hack her parents up in their sleep. It doesn`t mean that her parents are card-carrying Nazis. It doesn`t mean anything more than a simple funny pic of a cute innocent little girl doing something devious, most likely egged on by a parent or older sibling. I`m sure she knows what she`s doing is wrong outside the context of this photo & I`m sure she doesn;t go around flipping everybody off. Believe me, the world won`t stop spinning because of this photo...

Magickrat-
"I think the point he was trying to make is ..."
I`m not the word of God...you don`t have to interpret me. Pretty simple stuff "If you don`t get it - you don`t get it". But what do I know? Obviously I did something wrong with my kid or he wouldn`t want to be a lawyer.

As far as not understanding why the photo`s wrong, it`s an obvious truism. I could go on and on but why? You`ve decided, aparently, that encouraging kids to act rudely and like little gangsters is okay. I`m sure that will definately encourage them to become polite teenagers and terrific adults. Don`t teach small lessons when they are small, wait until they`re big and can understand it, is that it? I`m just guessing here because I haven`t got the vaguest clue why encourage children to do rude, obnoxious or stupid stuff is a good idea. Maybe I`m the one who`s missing something here.

Hey guy do you not understand context? the kid is posing for a picture.
Yeah if the child does it in a situation where they mean "f*uck off dad" then they should be punished
This is not that
This is humor mainly derived from the juxtaposition of a cute little girl making a rude gesture
This is not a big deal

Glad you turned out so well but what`s your point? that`s just who you are.
my parents raised me in a much more relaxed manner. I got to make a lot of my own decisions and they let me do whatever i wanted (within reason) and guess what? i turned out almost exactly as you describe yourself

In fact the only thing they really forbade me was toy guns and knives. guess what i`m fascinated with now as an adult?

Wow, you`re son`s in law school?

Please wait for a moment while I do back-flips across my den.

I have a son. 6yrs old. Very polite. Always "please", always "thank you", always "excuse me" when he wants to say something. All in all a very well-behaved & well-mannered child for 6 yrs old.

And guess what? I have a pic of him giving the camera the finger in his Batman costume for halloween. OH THE HUMANITY!!!

Then they wonder why their kids lose control when given the first chance...
_____________

My mother ruled our household coming up and when I say ruled, I mean she was the DICTATOR. But when I got out on my own @ 17, I worked 2 jobs, put myself through school, joined the military and have been a productive citizen. I have never smoked, done any kinds of drugs and rarely drink. I can count the number of times I have been to a club...I have been with my husband for 12 years and we just married 2 years ago....yep, I was a wild one.

wooo..losing all control over here....woooo

I`ll have to agree with you there, Korea.

It`s worse than sad that a kid in the world today can go to bed hungry or cold.

Kinda puts stupid pics like this into perspective, don`t it?

Sometimes you have to ask yourself, "How relevant will this argument be in my life 3 days from now?" Sit back & ponder that for a moment

Sad really...
____

No what`s sad is that children are dying from hunger, getting raped, abused and neglected. It`s sad that there are children who have no one to love or care for them. It`s sad that their going to grow up and treat their kids the same.

That`s sad...

When a parent teaches right from wrong at an early age, that`s good.

Taking it way too far.

It`s not like this kid is most likely going around giving the finger to everything that moves. It was a pic, for Christ`s sake. It was probably posed, probably just parents having fun with thier kids. Apparantly, something you or your kids know nothing about. I kinda feel sorry for your kids if you can`t have a little evil fun with them while still showing them right from wrong. Sad really...

From Wiki...

"Another possible origin of this gesture can be found in the first-century Mediterranean world, where extending the finger was one of many methods used to divert the ever-present threat of the evil eye offense."

So, how do we know this kid wasn`t just warding off evil spirits?

That`s MagicKrat. With a K.

I`m a parent. As long as the kid realizes what he/she is doing is wrong & it`s all meant as a joke, I see nothinbg wrong with this. I see a bunch of uptight parents who obviously don`t let their kids have any fun...

...and that`s exactly what`s wrong with parents today. They have no sense of humor, they`re uptight little trolls who don`t their kids have any fun. Helicopter parents who hover over their kids in a vain attempt to control every aspect of their lives. Let the kid have fun. If she was giving a Nazi salute & holding a rifle, I`d say different, but gimme a break. It`s not like her finger means the end of the friggin world. LIGHTEN UP!
_____

And when she gives the 1 finger salute at someone, is it still okay? Or is it wrong then? You can`t have it both ways, you can`t send mixed messages. And it is the responsibility of the parent to be a good role model and teach our children about respect, decency, values and all that other "silly" stuff. And if giving the finger is the only way for your child to have fun....then you need to be slapped....

Oh wait, am I being violent again???

I have a 5 year old little girl. I find this completely wrong and agree with gerry, this is wrong and a general parenting fail.

So, Magicrat, now that you heard it from a real parent, does it make a difference?

Or did someone roll up your vag lips in a taffy puller?

...and one more thing.

Should be slapped? That`s YOUR opinion. So your opinion is to treat everything you don`t agree to with violence? And you worry about a little girl`s finger when you have so much hatred built up inside you that you feel the need to slap a parent because of a pic you don`t agree with? Sounds like you have some issues to deal with yourself...
