@Link_Hiei: You`re thinking about neutering in the wrong way. There are literally hundreds of animals being put down in my county alone every week because there`s no room in the pound because pet overpopulation is such a problem. Plus, it is a lot healthier for the animals to be altered, it decreases the risk of most cancers and infections, and you don`t risk bringing dozens of puppies into the world that will be put down when they aren`t adopted.

@Link_Heil "I agree with you cobra. I would hate to get neutered just because I don`t want kids (I don`t) so I wouldn`t do it to my pet."

that`s all fine and good that you would hate to get neutered cuz you don`t want kids. but am i right in assuming you have the presence of mind to wear a rubber? or assure that some other form of birth control is being utilized?

my dog`s lack of thumbs made condoms a non-option so i had him neutered. bingo-bango, problem solved.

"I just dont see us as being above other animals as some people do"

It`s not about being above the animals. I`m all for neutering. There are so many unwanted dogs and cats sitting in homes or being put down, its irresponsible to allow more to be rbought into the world.

Granted, it depends on the situation. If you live in a place where you have full control of your dog and don`t encounter dogs in every day life then fine, let your dog have its balls, but if its likely to start shaggin bitches it encounters then its not fair on the puppys.

God, I sound like a canine jeremy kyle...

MilliLilli, My name has nothing to do with the animal. I would never kill snake of any kind, they have been some of my favorite pets.

??? Ummm... there`s one reason for spaying/neutering pets - population control. It has nothing to do with behaviour.

have you ever owned an actual pet? male or female

My physiology class in high school went to a veterinarian clinic and witnessed a neutering operation. Needless to say, all the males in the class cringed and immediately shielded their own gear.

@bnimp
go cut off your balls and see if the change in your body chemistry doesn`t alter your behaviour

Obviously most people seem to believe neutering animals is a good thing. Whether it be to make the more obedient and easier to control or to keep them from knocking up the neighbor dog.

Its just my personal opinion, but I just believe its wrong. I gave my reasons, take`em or leave`em. It just seems that I just dont see us as being above other animals as some people do. So I wouldnt do to my pets what I wouldnt do to my children [which I admittedly dont have yet].

@GothicQueen: You should really consider neutering your future dogs. You will find that their behaviour can be harder to control. Also, they will tend to be runners (meaning out of your home). So, getting someone elses female dog pregnant is a good possibility.

@CobraKiller: kitty gets out ONE TIME and you`ve got or caused another litter of unwanted kittens.

If you don`t plan on breeding your pet? SPAY OR NEUTER (aka: fix) them! Oh, MzSweetPeach already said that :-)

MY kitty`s main reason for living is catfood & naps >^.,^< (oh, and a little catnip now and then)

Intigrid, Not passing on your genetic material doesnt equal your life being useless. What I say is biological mean. There are of course those who dont follow the mean, I.E. Humans. We are the only animal known to physically cause themselves to purposely not reproduce. It is our pre-frontal cortex getting in the way of our natural function. Just like those who choose to commit suicide, or those who choose to live life without sex.

Your immortality is not quite obstructed though, fore if you have family of any close relation than they will pass down your genetic information for you [if only a fraction of it]. This is one of the general concepts for the reason we strive to protect our families. In theory anyway.

"Madest, As biological beings, all of our one true purpose is survival. The greatest survival we have is passing on our genetic material. Everything else is just extra really. I mean, its all great, but really just extra."

I don`t have any kids and I had a vasectomy when I was 23, so if you mean to imply that my life is meaningless then f*ck you.

MZsweetpeach, Most animals [at least mammals and birds that I know of] have a pretty deep level of mate selection. Especially those animals that choose long term mates. I will give you one thing, with our overgrown pre-frontal cortex, we do have the illusion of a greater purpose.

I don`t plan on neutering my future pets. But I plan on only owning males so I don`t foresee any accidental puppies happening.

I don`t know how the suggestion of human sterilization came into play but that obviously has little to do with the spaying and neutering of our pets. We humans are capable of deeper levels of thought and ultimately decide our own reproductive fate. Animals are incapable of this process and instead succumb wholly to their rudimentary instincts. I also don`t submit to the notion that the only reason for existence is reproduction. Perhaps from a species-level standpoint that is true but contemporary humans are *well* past the primitive stages of ensuring survival for our kind. The real answer is there is no reason for existence. We`re all just turds in this great punch bowl we call Earth.

So please, nobody get me wrong. Love your animals as you would your family. But dont forget, their main reason for living is the same as yours; to pass on their genetics to stay immortal.

Spaying an animal does not take away it`s only reason for existence. Did you really say that? Ugh man sheesh. Have you ever owned a pet?

I`m all for spaying and neutering. All of my animals have been spayed and neutered and they`re all happy and healthy.

"If you have a pet that you`re not planning to breed ... spay and neuter your pets"

So by that logic if I don`t want to have kids I should be neutered? Drat that. Spay/neuter is a major (unnecessary) surgery and changes the pets personality. My un-spayed dog (boxer) is happy the way she is and I am a responsible owner and am capable of keeping her out of situations that would lead to unwanted puppies.

MZsweetpeach, neutering your animal doesnt necessarily kill its sex drive. Thats why neutered animals are still known to hump things.

also, the reason why the "pet" population is so high is because of people who either abandon their animals who then roam free and mate. Or, from those owners who just dont keep a good enough eye on their animals who run around and mate.

The best way to control the pet population isnt to neuter them, its to keep an eye on them the same way you would to keep your kids from coming home with babies. As well as not breeding your animals unless you have potential buyers lined up.

That`s ignorance down below. I volunteer at the Humane Society and the amount of animals that are euthanized each day is staggering. If you have a pet that you`re not planning to breed and you DON`T spay or neuter them you`re actually just torturing them because you`re forcing them to live a life of unrequited sexual desire. Like Bob Barker always said, spay and neuter your pets :)

Great PSA, although, I am against the spaying and neutering of animals. You are taking away their only reason for existence; to pass on their genetic material.
