OMG! That`s at the Koln Cathedral in Germany. I sang at that very spot they are standing. The song in English IS Lo` How a Rose`er blooming. It is a great honor to sing where they are in the church. The general public usually is not allowed near the altar.

Huh, I guess we`re lucky this is Austrian then- even though the difference between those two is like the difference between British English and American English.

Robo+Ollie, I`m gonna have to agree with you this time, my dad, who speaks a little German, always says that even the most innocuous little phrase spoken in German like "I love you" still sounds like you`re sending someone to the gas chambers. *makes a face @decay*

This song is called Lo` How a Rose `er blooming
As for the whole German being ugly, it`s the language that most classical music and operas are written in.....I think it can be very beautiful
Nice voices, but German is still one hell of an ugly sounding language. On a scale of 1-10 it is somewhere just above Welsh.
...which would make it about a 6.5 when you compare it to Chinese.

Best language for vocals is definitely Italian, followed by Spanish.

Eh, what?

German is the language used for some outstanding songs. Try listening to Diana Damrau. Here`s a clip from an opera. Singing starts at ~02:15

Queen of the Night

Or how about Ode an die Freude? (Ode to Joy in English).

This is gorgeous. I can`t imagine how much time they must spend in rehearsal, just refining and tuning each line. (Actually I can because it`s what I do for a living. xD)

Sounds like something Hitler would listen to during Christmas whilst roasting Jews over an open fire.

It IS a traditional German Christmas carol. Here is the words in German and in English.

DEUTSCH

Musik: Köln, 1599
Text: Unbekannt/Anonymous

Es ist ein Ros` entsprungen
Aus einer Wurzel zart.
Wie uns die Alten sungen,
Aus Jesse kam die Art
Und hat ein Blümlein bracht,
Mitten im kalten Winter,
Wohl zu der halben Nacht.

Das Röslein das ich meine,
Davon Jesaias sagt:
Maria ist`s, die Reine,
Die uns das Blümlein bracht:
Aus Gottes ewigem Rat
Hat sie ein Kindlein g`boren
Bleibend ein reine Magd.
ENGLISH

Music: Cologne, 1599
English (1894): Theodore Baker

Lo, how a rose e`er blooming
From tender stem hath sprung!
Of Jesse`s lineage coming,
As men of old have sung.
It came, a flow`ret bright,
Amid the cold of winter,
When half-spent was the night.

Isaiah `twas foretold it,
The rose I have in mind, <

Its not specifically a Christmas song. Its called "Lo How a Rose E`re Blooming." Its a 15th century German chamber piece (i.e. voices only. no instruments).

It sounds like a hymn, which I guess you can consider a Christmas song. O Holy Night is considered a Christmas song, but it can be sung any time of the year, since it just talks about Jesus saving us and all that.
