Atheists don`t need to rationalise their deaths by pretending they went to heaven because they didn`t waste their lives living a lie.

@yoda141 - Of course it is all subjective on whether or not he was great dependent upon the perceptions of the opinion giver. If it was not so, then by what means can you objectively qualify it? To be objectively true it has to be universally true independent of the observer and in this case it can be argued either way.

aragnarok: no, it is not subjective, one side hates him by default because he talks against blind belief.
No reason to bash someone`s beliefs, unless that belief is Scientology ;)
Why is it OK to bash someone`s belief in Scientology, but not someone`s belief in Islam or Judaism or Christianity?

God: Yo Abraham. I want you to kill your firstborn son.
Abraham: Um, er.. okay, sure.. I`ll do it for you lord!
God: Wait! I was just testing you! LOL!

"Hey everybody! I`m an atheist troll! I`m here to yell at all Christians, call them hypocrites, quote things out of context from the Bible to give the impression that I know what I`m talking about, and generally just try to stir s*** up!"
You know me way too well.

Some people will think he was great and others will think he is terrible, so really it is subjective depending upon your perception. In my opinion as it was demonstrably evident that his perceptions were extremely limited in regards to metaphysical spirituality, Christopher Hitchens is simply a self-righteous prick who promoted a different kind of ignorance that was more acceptable to those who are against organized religions.

@lordtyusa, The reason why people were quoting the Bible like that was to demonstrate to Collegebound that his claim that "no one religion (MAYBE Satanism) tells anyone to kill anyone" was wrong. Why shouldn`t we be able to respond to demonstrably wrong claims like that?

If quoting your own texts like that does not respect your beliefs, then you`ve basically shut down any kind of dialog between us, because anything we say that disagrees with you is "disrespectful".

Finally, you said, "Do I call you names and quote science books out of context at you? Nope." Actually, earlier in that same paragraph you said, "I`m an atheist troll!" among many other slurs against atheists here, simply for US standing up for what WE believe (or don`t believe). Simply put, you were being the kind of hypocrite you`re complaining about.

Sathon: "Proof that Hitchens and his followers are non-nice individuals."

Uh... So the comments of one individual are enough to condemn an entire group? This sounds like a fun game. Can I play?

I mean, there are so many "non-nice" Christians I can choose from; anything from pedophile priests to the Christian instigators of the crusades and other attempts at mass genocide. It`s so hard to choose! How about, "Kill them all, let God sort them out!" as the phrase spoken by one Christian that I should used to judge ALL of them?

But seriously, please try to avoid overgeneralizations and stereotyping like that. The world has enough hatred and bigotry as it is.

@paddy - I`m not picking on any particular person. I`m just saying that we should all just quit the bickering and "live and let live".
@cyberdyn - Exactly what I`m talking about. I pointed out no particular person. I quoted nothing from the Bible. I didn`t shove my beliefs in your face, or point out why yours seem inferior. I simply stood up for my beliefs and asked you to respect them. Where is the harm in that? I don`t understand why it offends some of you so much for people to be Christians. Can`t I live the way I choose? Where is my right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness? I`m not trying to troll. I`m just sick and tired of the religious debates flaring up every time an even remotely religious article/pic/video gets posted. And maybe I`m biased, but it certainly seems to me that the attacks are overwhelmingly from atheists against Christians and not the other way around (though I`d be willing to concede if someone has the statistics on that to prove me wrong).

@lordtyusa, what your really saying:
"I`m here to yell at all NON-Christians, call them hypocrites, quote things out of context from the Bible to give the impression that I know what I`m talking about, and generally just try to stir s*** up! I am here to whine and complain about how intolerate/evil/stupid any belief other than Christianity is with my "superior" knowledge. Nevermind the fact that I show a complete lack of tolerance myself for another person`s beliefs!"

I am here to whine and complain about how intolerate/evil/stupid Christianity is with my "superior" knowledge. Nevermind the fact that I show a complete lack of tolerance myself for another person`s beliefs! Seriously, it`s getting old. If you don`t like Christianity, fine. But leave those of us who do alone. Do you see me trying to convert you? What is the big problem if I want to believe in a higher power? You want to believe that everything came out of nothing suddenly and for no apparent reason. Do I call you names and quote science books out of context at you? Nope. So really, who`s the more mature person here? Grow up.

It only works if you take an eternalist view of the nature of time--that is, past, present and future all equally exist, and the difference is simply that the present is where we happen to be now. Atheists who also subscribe to presentism are just screwed; upon death, they cease to exist forevermore.

Oh, here`s another good one.

Suppose you hear in one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you that some worthless rabble among you have led their fellow citizens astray by encouraging them to worship foreign gods. In such cases, you must examine the facts carefully. If you find it is true and can prove that such a detestable act has occurred among you, you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock. (Deuteronomy 13:13-19 NLT)

Christianity mentions killing people quite a bit.

Cursed be he who does the Lords work remissly, cursed he who holds back his sword from blood. (Jeremiah 48:10 NAB)

Make ready to slaughter his sons for the guilt of their fathers; Lest they rise and posses the earth, and fill the breadth of the world with tyrants. (Isaiah 14:21 NAB)

They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. (2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB)

A man or a woman who acts as a medium or fortuneteller shall be put to death by stoning; they have no one but themselves to blame for their death. (Leviticus 20:27 NAB)

If a man commits adultery with another man`s wife, both the man and the woman must be put to death. (Leviticus 20:10 NLT)

You should not let a sorceress l

The guns don`t kill people argument doesn`t work here, because religion wields people as it`s weapons. As this forum has shown time and time again, Religion is the single most devisive subject throughout human history. If all religions were to suddenly vanish, the world would be far more peaceful.

@Rejects who don`t know who christopher hitchens was. Your opinions are void if you`re a religious person, or read a page and think you can honestly judge someone by it, hence wikipedia.

this is a logical fallacy. If the world was worse off without him, fine, however, that does not mean that he is in a better place since he is no place at all anymore.

unless of course you believe that non-existence is better than existence. That of course is totally subjective however, and cannot be applied to this.

This logic is illogical. It`s dependent upon where he ends up, and if he doesn`t end up anywhere, it doesn`t matter how worse off the previous place was, because he`s still nowhere. And nowhere can not be considered a better or worse place because it isn`t a place at all. He was simply in a place that got a little worse when he left, and is now nowhere.

but...doesn`t that mean that they aren`t technically anywhere? their bodies are just trapped in a casket 6 feet under being ravaged by maggots and other insects? still making here being a better place?
