Maybe it is an inside joke, and the soldier always corrected a family member that called it
"I-Rock" so they put up a sign to make fun of it.

During Irak 1.0, I remember seeing a billboard for a local radio station that had a picture of a tank rolling over Saddam`s head and it said "Iraq and Roll"

Or it could be ignorance....

"Probably made by a 5 year old..."

No excuse for his parents not to correct him if that was the case

I wish there was a "like" button on IAB so I could like your comment "Out of Qs at the Q store."

You don`t have to be educated to sign up to die for your country. Indeed, it`s an impediment.

@Edgarska19,
Judging by the American flags and English used on the other signs the photo is from the United States. We spell it "Iraq" here. What planet are you from? Also, regarding your Deutschland analogy, this is more like calling it Germank.

Irak is also correct, depends on what country you are.
That`s like saying Deutschland is incorrect, because the correct term is Germany.

@McGovern1981 - HA! That doesn`t make sense since the rest of the sign is English!! More likely that they are ignorant idiots that don`t check their spelling before they post up a sign.

If any of the rest of the sentence was in French you might have been onto something there McGovern.

@almightybob1

You do realize that in some areas of Louisiana some people speak a form of French?

Accepted by who? I`ve never seen it spelled any other way than "Iraq" in English.

If they were trying to spell it the way Iraqis would, it would be in Arabic. If they were trying to spell it the way the French or Germans would (which is indeed "Irak") then that`s equally weird, unless you often start referring to countries in a different language.

"How was your holiday?"
"Oh great thanks, Allemagne is lovely this time of year!"
"... what?"

It`s far more likely that they simply don`t know how to spell Iraq.

Uh, when have you seen Iraq spelt Irak in the English Language? Let`s face it this photo likely represents ignorance rather than someone deciding to use an alternative spelling to show how smart they are.

Somehow, it doesn`t feel right to ridicule a family that is celebrating the return of their son/daughter/husband/wife/... from Iraq.

Besides, as heavypred also noted, most languages spell Iraq with a k, so there!
