These are the guys with the anti-gay policy, right?

Not giving my money to hate groups.

It`d be a lot easier to like what they do if it didn`t involve discriminating against the people who often need help the most.

Between their no-homos-allowed policies, and the policy where they simply trash toy donations they deem "un-Christian" such as Harry Potter toys (they don`t even bother donating them to more accepting charities, they all go right in the dump), it`s really hard to see the Salvation Army in a positive light, when other charities exist that do things better.

50% of what they do is commendable. The other 50% is despicable. They refuse to separate the two.

The answer is simple; find a local atheist alternative. I think we should start the Apostate Army. Free food and lodging to atheists and an extra cup-cake to anyone who will renounce religion.

@Neyro

If the people running Salvation Army cared more about the people they are raising money for and less about the fact that people like me like to bang people of the same sex, they wouldn`t have threatened to SHUT DOWN ALL OF THEIR SOUP KITCHENS in NYC when they were told to treat the gays equally. Well, then the Salvation Army decided to do the right thing, put their religious superficiality aside, and treat the gays equally. That is...until people like James Dobson from Focus on Everyone Else`s Family and Ignore the Problems in the Mainstream Christian Church had a hissy fit, prompting the Salvation Army to digress back to discrimination. No thanks. There are other charities out there who don`t discriminate, and I will donate to them instead.

Gerry: Never said you had to like them or donate to them, that`s your decision. Nor do I expect everyone here to agree with me, that would be impossible.

I was merely countering your comments about them, don`t take it personally. All I`m saying is that a group doesn`t have to be a cheerleader for gays to be a worthwhile cause.

You`ve said you`re a `weapons grade homosexual`, but geesh man. I`ve given to several causes and groups that weren`t pro-Christian, true I wouldn`t give to satanists (not that I`ve seen any), but you don`t have to make The SA out to be something evil just because they won`t sponsor your float in the next gay parade.

Crakr, There`s a wide gap between WBC and SA. But it`s hating gays actively vs quietly.
Why do you expect a non christian give to any christian charity? Do you regularly give to muslim causes? Or jewish ones? When was the last time you donated cash to a buddhist organization?

If you like it Crakr, great, but you can`t expect everyone to like what you like. Agree with what you agree with. Give to things you give to.

I`ll give to the Gay Teen home. They take in the gay teenagers that were thrown out by their loving {christian} families. Keeps them off the streets.

Gerry: You should read DixxyRarr`s link, nothing there says they dislike gays, they don`t approve of all aspects of people acting on their gayness, but they also have a policy of not abusing or bullying gay people and their services are open to everyone gay or straight.

I`m not saying you have to like them Gerry, but you originally made them sound like the WBC and that simply isn`t true.

Gerry is right. I view it like this: I only have so much money I can afford to donate to various charities. Thus, I only give to charities that trust and that I agree with. I don`t give money to people on the street, but will give food. I do the Christmas tree angel thing to buy cool toys (but don`t buy clothes because that`s boring - I find a boy`s name on the list and get him a Tonka truck, action figures, and a football/ basketball).

The point is, there are thousands of worthwhile charities - so find one that you can agree with and give to them. I wouldn`t donate to PETA or GLAAD or the OWS, the Democratic Party or the Republican Party - even if they had all of that money going to a Christmas party for poor kids and puppies. But there are plenty of other places that can use help.

Crakr: You`re missing my point. So they do lots of happy family things, bottom line they don`t like gays. They don`t have to sponser gay-bashing to prove it. Just as you would not give to a Satanist Church no matter how many family outings they sponsered.

Most people of any faith make the inherant mistake of believing everyone should like or approve of it.

I don`t support the Salvation Army because they are anti-gay...

Not all religious charities are bad though, I was a Catholic Worker for 2 years, and I still volunteer with them. The CW is a HUGE supporter of gay rights and opposes all social injustices.
F*ck, I`m not even Catholic... but that don`t matter... Dorothy Day loved everyone :)

Gerry: the 4 months I was there, didn`t see or hear anything `anti-gay` from The SA and I`m pretty sure one of the ladies that was staying there in the women`s house was a lesbian, though she never said she was.

They are pro-family and do have family events for kids, have a vacation bible school, and so on but nothing anti-homo was ever presented and no one was kicked out of the shelter for that reason.

Crakr, yes I was aware of that. As religious things go they`re pretty low key. But as I am gay and therefore the spawn of satan in the eyes of most religions, why would I give anything to them?

Look at it from my perspective...Would you give to an organization called "Athiest Army"
just because they make a good soup?

Gerry: You probably don`t know this but The SA doesn`t make anyone attend their religious services or shove religion down homeless people`s throats. No one I know was ever once asked to pray or read the bible while I was there (I did, on my own, but was never asked to).

They are sincere in their own belief, The SA is a church of it`s own, but they don`t preach to the people they help, unless of course those people voluntarily want to hear and enjoy their message of selflessly giving to others.

CrakrJak, I always give my spare change to them at Christmas time. I`ll tell you though, some of the folks manning those kettles don`t look too trustworthy to me, so I`ll stick with the cash donations.

"Charity is dead. Only the government can save us."

What makes you think that? Not the charity part, but that the government could actually save us? We`re screwed, man!

I`m glad to see this, The Salvation Army helps and feeds a lot of homeless people. Due to unfortunate circumstances, years ago, I used to be homeless and it was The Salvation Army that helped me get back on my feet.

Please donate generously, this season.
