Actually I have personally witnessed this type of phenomenon happening.. A family friend got into a car accident and was in a coma for a few weeks. He even paralysed the right side of his face. Before the accident he was a normal straight guy, but half a year or so after the accident he became really strange and started dressing in drag and his whole personality changed.

I`m not saying that`s what happened, but maybe he just saw a chance to come out and blame it on a stroke instead of admitting that he`s been hiding for all those years ?? Making a good thing from a bad situation ?.. not improbable imo..

jtrebowski, I`ve heard of people waking up with a different accent (usually not an actual accent, just messed up speech that sounds like an accent), and I`ve heard of people waking up and being able to speak a dormant language , but I`ve never heard of someone waking up and speaking a completely new language that they never knew at any point of time in their life.

That`s not necessarily true. There have been cases, such as Phineas Gage, where traumatic brain injury have changed personality. I`m not trying to say that being gay is caused by brain injury, I`m just saying that maybe the stroke rewired what he found attractive.

"You are born either gay or straight. It`s in your genes."

This is wrong. I study psychology, and this is just bad science. There is, however, a growing collection of scientific data that supports the idea that all sexuality is developed from age 0-13, and becomes concrete at around age 22.

Meaning, no one is born any sexual orientation, it is more so that societal pressure and norms, and possibly cognitive dissonance theories press people into a sexual identity.

What I mean is, it is perfectly within normal limits to develop as a homosexual.

First off, it`s the Daily Mail- so take that as you will.

Secondly, People are born gay, it`s genetics so I don`t think it`s possible to be `re-wired`

I WILL however concede that I think it`s possible for somebody to develop a kind of disorder after a severe head trauma like that. Perhaps something where they begin to identify with someone of a homosexual nature.

If he is happy and feeling sexually fulfilled- more power to the kid. Terrible shock for the fiance I`m sure- but hey. He survived a stroke- he could have died, that would have been much worse!

"This is wrong. I study psychology, and this is just bad science."

Translation: I don`t believe in the results so I will search out studies that reflect my Christian beliefs.

I was born gay. No matter how wonderful my upbringing was it didn`t change that fact. I was raised straight but it didn`t change the fact. You really couldn`t get more Beaver Cleaver than the way I was raised. It didn`t change the fact that I am gay.

elkingo: I agree with your analysis, some kids find it easier psychologically and chose to be homosexuals, especially if they are being teased and bullied, you used the term `pressed`, into that role.

I`ve sen this sort of `pressing` happen to a friend as well as a relative of mine. My relative reversed her sexual identity and is now dating men.

I know this knowledge and my stance on it, makes me unpopular here at IAB, but if it helps even one less person feel trapped and miserable with their current sexual identity and allows them to seek help, then it`s worth it.

@markust123 -- no Mark, bad science is bad science.

I wish you would read the rest of my post about sexuality being developed. I don`t read Christian science either btw. I stick to APA accredited peer reviewed journals. There is a growing literary base that shows human sexual preference is developed.

You can take that as however you want. I wasn`t talking about moral decisions or anything. I actually have no problem with homosexuality myself. My assistant is a lesbian, and she is one of my best friends for example.

@CrakrJak -- don`t try and misquote me. I don`t feel that people make decisions on their sexual preference. I feel that it is developed in a manner that is not on the surface level. You make it sound as if they choose a sexual identity based on public opinion and morals. This is not the case at all.

Sexual identity is based largely on what the developing mind shows preference towards. Preference can be modified to some extent by social factors -- which is why there is a higher occurrence of homosexuality in larger populations. However, that says nothing about cognitive moral decisions. Human sexual desire is not a moral issue directed by the divine. Human sexual desire is a collective cognitive database that is largely directed by chemical levels that impact natural brain development.

In other words, it is natural to be gay. It isn`t abnormal behavior, and it isn`t a choice.

My educated opinion is that it is definitely not a choice and definitely something you are born with.

The only data I am going from is my own personal experiences. I had a relatively brief (months long) but deep embedding into the extensive and crazy gay world in New Orleans recently. It solidified my hunch that it was not a choice. Actions are a choice, but whether someone likes it or is attracted to it, that is definitely not a choice... it just is. Being surrounded by gay people and picking their brains and hanging out with them led me to this conclusion.

I have a question for the "It`s a choice crowd". If it is a choice why am I gay and my brother is straight? We were raised in the same way. Neither of us had anything traumatic happen to us as a child. It was a wonderful childhood. Why would I choose to be gay when I had no gay role models in my life? I was raised in a straight environment. Why would I choose something that went so far against my upbringing?

Absolutely but all the one`s I`ve known were straight. Rebelling and the idea of choosing your sexuality are completely different things. The only time I`ve seen people choose a sexuality are girls in college but I don`t blame them - frat boys are so repulsive.

"Rebelling and the idea of choosing your sexuality are completely different things."

    Is it?
i don`t know wheter sexuality is biological or environmental. it`s kinda hard to tell. all i know is that some people fancy opposite sex and others same sex.
but for the hell of it lets say it`s environmental, wouldn`t rebelling against the standard be a factor? along with other tings of course.
I have known i was straight since kindergarten when i got kinda excited over seeing deep inside one of the nannys cleavage.. maybe i would be gay if i saw a dick instead. who knows..

When I was in kindergarten instead of playing sports I would play house with the girls. I was always the dog. Not sure what that means.

It didn`t even register until much later when I saw a Biography on him but when I nine I was absolutely enamored with Shaun Cassidy. Don`t remember having any such feelings about Farah Faucet even though my brother was all over her.

BTW - Psychiatrists are medical doctors, they typically don`t conduct psychological studies.

Also, which scientists disagree with me? I won`t accept a single damn article you post unless it is accredited, and peer reviewed.

I can post you several citations, but I highly doubt you pay the 1500 a year to have access to scientific journals like I do. So, anything I post would be wasted on your inferior "aliens exist" unscientific mind.

"the most commonly taught theories related to identity and identity development are rooted in psychology. Psychological definitions of identity focus on understanding of self, or personal identity. Erik Erikson (1959/1994) expanded on Freud`s thinking about the development of "ego identity," a concept that posits identity as a stage of ego growth (Marcia, 1993). Taking a lifespan approach, Erikson identified eight stages/phases in which individuals address a series of crises to arrive at more or less healthy resolutions to major developmental tasks. He proposed that development is governed in part by the epigenetic principle, a combination of genetic and environmental influences that governs the direction and timing of development (Erikson, 1959/1994)"

"What sets the experience of those with atypical sexual anatomies apart from the pervasive sorts of “gender training” (from which no one is spared) are the conspicuous marks of enforcement borne by those with intersex conditions. We should not mistake the “depathologization” of homosexuality (its removal from the DSM) and the increasing acceptance of LGBT individuals as a triumph against this power, which is “everywhere,” but acknowledge it as a moment that vividly illustrates that “where there is power, there is resistance, and yet, or rather consequently, this resistance is never in a position of exteriority in relation to power."
"At the same time, too-close identification of homosexuality with intersex has led intersex activists and their allies to ignore the underlying health conditions that may result in atypical anatomies."

"This study examined how levels of sexually explicit material (SEM) use during adolescence and young adulthood were associated with sexual preferences, sexual behaviors, and sexual and relationship satisfaction. Participants included 782 heterosexual college students (326 men and 456 women; Mage = 19.9) who completed a questionnaire online. Results revealed high frequencies and multiple types and contexts of SEM use, with men`s usage rates systematically higher than women`s. Regression analyses revealed that both the frequency of SEM use and number of SEM types viewed were uniquely associated with more sexual experience (a higher number of overall and casual sexual intercourse partners, as well as a lower age at first intercourse). Higher frequencies of SEM use were associated with less sexual and relationship satisfaction. The frequency of SEM use and number of SEM types viewed were both associated with higher sexual preferences ...

...for the types of sexual practices typically presented in SEM. These findings suggest that SEM use can play a significant role in a variety of aspects of young adults` sexual development processes."

"The evolution of sexual display traits or preferences for them in response to divergent natural selection will alter sexual selection within populations, yet the role of sexual selection in ecological speciation has received little empirical attention."

"This study investigated child development and parenting in 106 families headed by 27 lesbian, 29 gay, and 50 heterosexual couples (80% White, M = 42 years) with young adopted children (41% White, M = 3 years). Parents and teachers reported that, on average, children were developing in typical ways. Measures of children`s adjustment, parenting approaches, parenting stress, and couple relationship adjustment were not significantly associated with parental sexual orientation. However, several family process variables—parenting stress, parenting approaches, and couple relationship adjustment—were found to be significantly associated with children`s adjustment, regardless of parental sexual orientation."

Last one shows that parental sexuality has no bearing on child sexual development (discredits genetic predisposition to sexual preference).

There you go... 6 accredited, academic, peer reviewed, scientific journal articles all within the last 2 - 3 years (save one that wasn`t dated but is likely within 3 years) from 12 different scientists from the fields of psychology, psychiatry, biology, and cognitive neuroscience that shows I wasn`t just pulling my theory out of my ass. Should I post more, or have I shown that I am unbiased and informed?
