DuckBoy87-"I drive a 1994 Chevy Cavalier."

I had one of those (92 Chevy Cavalier Type 10)...loved that car. (Actually, my daugher was conceived in that car.)

Izaq-"WTF do you need a truck for when noone seems to be carrying any cargo?"

WTF does it matter what I `need`. It`s simply sufficient that I `want` to drive a truck with a big V-8 (and a Jeep with a V-8 and no Catalytic Converter). Nor is any anyone else`s business nor decision.

tommy2X4-"Shut your engines off."

You have no say-so in the matter. Foxtrot Oscar.

Don`t like it? It`s a free country and you`re free to take your pius butt down the road to someplace that doesn`t bug you.

Funny how Cheryl goes straight for the physical appearance put-downs. There is SO much that is wrong with this woman`s behavior, her physical appearance is the LEAST of it. I love the guy`s unruffled attitude. When someone it having a sh*t-fit & falling in it right in front of me, I get the CRAZY giggles. And laughing at them makes them SO much more angry. Hee, hee.

Meh. Whatever. Prius Owners are dicks.

Chances are she was driving a gas guzzling pos back in the 80`s when the CRX was getting 40mpg. Why didn`t she give a poo back then? I also doubt fumes were bothering her back then either.

Folks, that lady is the person one turns into when sex is no longer available.

next greencar, a site which is (obviously) specifically biased towards "green" cars, rate cars on a total environmental impact basis, based on pollution in manufacturing and in use.

So I looked at the numerous Prius models in their database. The "greenest" model scores a 35 in their rating.

I can`t find a way to get more than 50 results per search. All of the top 50 diesels beat the Prius, along with an unknown number more (because I can`t get more than 50 results). 30 petrol cars beat it and 9 draw with it.

All of the top 50 diesels (and an unknown number more) even beat it purely on mpg.
I`d be surprised if the Hummer didn`t outlast the Prius in terms of lifetime of use - its massively over-engineered and under-stressed for use as a town-car, whereas the prius will be built to a low weight, and therefore finer tolerances and more subject to mechanical wear ~ I would have thought. (Not that I`m siding with the politically biased dust-to-dust, far from it).
Good point. 3.5 times the milage seems like rather a lot even then, but it`s less unfair than I thought.
In any case a decent small diesel wins hands down over either tech - my Tdi saloon, bought for a pittance with 100,000 on the clock, now at 260,000 miles and rising ~ 60mpg easily on the motorway @ the legal limit - I`d like to know what a prius does on the motorway - I bet its not as good.
It`s about 50mpg, for the mark 3 model (which is much better for extra-urban economy than earlier models).

Aren`t modern, low-sulfur diesel engines more efficient than gasoline engines? I have a buddy who had a 2000-something Ram 2500 4x4 with the turbodiesel that`s nearly as fuel-efficient as my V6 Explorer sport 4x4 (a vehicle that`s about half the size of his).

Perhaps the guy is a camping enthusiast and needs a diesel to tow. Maybe he drives a lot and wants the reliability of a diesel engine (he does say he`s in marketing - don`t they travel a lot). He mentions having a farm. Perhaps he uses the vehicle for that use, as well? Or maybe he just likes having a big truck? All are justified reasons for having a diesel truck.

Also, that woman was offended because he was idling his truck and the wind was blowing the fumes toward her. Therefore, since she was the one offended, it makes it her problem. She should have been the one to move HER vehicle.

I think she was mad because he interrupted her fantasy about Al Gore.

@izzaq - diesel engines are still more efficient than petrol, even after the greater density of the fuel is taken into account - by about 20%. Partly down the higher compression ratio, partly down to the improved operation of a diesel unit under partial loads.

There is no disputing that small particle diesel pollutants are a human health problem - and for that reason alone, an electric-petrol hybrid around town does make sense.

It`s been shown several times before in different journals etc that modern day fuel efficient petrol and diesel cars are less carbon intensive overall then hybrids because a hybrid involves a lot of a global manufacturing process getting very specific parts from far away places in intensive mining techniques

From what I understand, Toyota Pious batteries are usually Nickel metal hydride. Mining and refining Nickel is a dirty and polluting process. The manufacture and lifetime operation of a priapus car creates twice the pollution that an ordinary small diesel car does in it`s working life. The generation of the electricity to power/charge the thing contributes to this pollution. I would be far happier about the environmental effect of running a modern diesel than a hybrid. The shouty woman ought to do a bit of research: Her car may be clean where it is being used, but is probably poisoning some other poor souls somewhere else. The chances are that her car causes more pollution than the diesel truck. (self-righteous sow)

Izaq, if you live in an area that gets 3 feet of snow overnight, and that snow stays on the ground for 3 months or so, sometimes a smaller car doesn`t work.

I mentioned I do have a smaller car, but I am a good driver. I know how to drive my car in the snow, however a lot of people aren`t good drivers but they can`t just not go to work because of snow.
And yes, 3 feet of snow doesn`t automatically shut down the city.

Yes diesel is more energy dense. So it makes no sense saying diesel engines are more energy conserving. 40% more dense, 40% more mileage. Status quo!

BUT diesel engines produce far more particles that cause lung cancer. In many larger citys in Europe you either need a special particle filter or you are not allowed to drive in the city centres. Particles from diesel engines cause just as many cancers as smoking atm.

@Americans: Stop effing whining about gas prices and buy smaller cars! WTF do you need a truck for when noone seems to be carrying any cargo?

@deckem I believe the solution to this problem is a hydrogen fuel cell. unfortunately there`s still years of research to be done before the technology will be ready for mass production, but the potential for a zero emission vehicle with no toxic batteries is there.

It`s a shame that the Jaguar C-X75 hybrid is currently an unbuildable concept car. A turbine/electric setup with the turbines running at a constant speed (far more efficient) to generate electricity for the motors that drive the car (electric motors can vary power output far more efficiently). The problem is getting a pair of 80,000 rpm miniature turbines to work properly in a car...but it`s not unfeasible.

Granted, it would cost silly money but if they can get the kit working then a scaled-down version in a car made from normal materials would be possible.

As much as I agree with what you`re saying, I have to point out one thing.
Don`t let the name of a chemical reaction fool you. A "clean burning" fuel or a fuel that burns completely still emits CO2. In fact that`s one of the products from burning a hydrocarbon. That and water (and other things for other types of fuels).
The burning of this fuel may be more efficient that others, but that doesn`t mean it doesn`t emit any gasses.

Of course there are always two sides to this argument. Hybrids offer a better fuel efficiency than most other types of engines but then they have all those lovely dead batteries in the end. Diesel offers more power than gasoline, but if you`re not going to use that power why have it? it also requires heavier components to work.
But gasoline isn`t the ultimate fuel either.
A completely electric motor would have the least emissions, but we`ll have that dead battery problem with them (for now).

But whateve

and yet another thing. to debunk the "gas guzzling piece of sheisse" thing. diesel engines are 30-40%more efficient than gasoline engines because the fuel is burned completely (in an engine that isnt heavily modded)also if you have diesel and gas occupy the same amount of space, diesel has far more btu`s by weight therefore being much more rich in energy. anyone else have anything to add?

diesel emits less pollution than gasoline. gasoline has three key pollutants where as diesel has only two and it emits less than gasoloine cars. anyone ever EVER gets into this with me they are getting an ear full of information they never expected. sure it may be black smoke but the ingredients in it are less harmful than what gas has in it. if i had five minutes with this woman she would be schooled by a 19 year old

I drive a 1994 Chevy Cavalier. It runs perfectly. Its enviromental footprint is a fraction of what a Prius`s enviromental footprint.

Prius`s expected lifespan is about 10 years, all because of the nickel battery; my car is nearing doubling that lifespan.
My car is made with steel, though harmful to make, not harmful to dispose of. A Prius harms the environment in production and in disposal.
And though I don`t get the MPGs of a Prius, I still get 33MPG... Which is a lot for a car that`s 17 years old.

... All this and I don`t believe that the climate change is influenced by man...

Gah, I`ve just checked and Toyota have reduced the warranty to 100,000 miles.

Still, what`s the mileage warranty on a Hummer? Why presume that it will last for more than 3 times as many miles as a Prius?
If anyone is interested the study/report, that has been confirmed in peer review, is called "Dust to Dust: The Energy Cost of New Vehicles from Concept to Disposal"
It`s already been debunked. By peer review. It`s full of unreasonable bias designed to support a pre-arranged conclusion.

Random example: They took 109,000 miles as the lifespan of a Prius before it has to be junked. There`s a 150,000 mile manufacturer`s warranty on most of it.

Hybrids are far less "green" than advocates and idiots make them out to be, but they are more "green" than massive and massively inefficient ICEVs like a Hummer.

A damn sight better than my old douchmobile, and I"m not fooling myself with a hybrid.

The report shows that the Ni-Cad batteries produce tonnes Sulfur Dioxide (see acid rain) both during operation and during mining for nickel. In addition the large batteries will cause problems with disposal in the future.

Owning diesels and living in california, I get to deal with this all the time. If I stop somewhere for just a minute or 2 I leave the engine running. Not because I`m a wanna be big rig, but because starting the engine is was causes the most wear and tear. If it`s more than 5 minutes, I`ll just shut it down.
