Good target. Very symbolic since it`s the media that has ruined Paterno`s legacy.

The media didn`t ruin poo. He knew about a child molester on HIS COACHING STAFF and said nothing.

drat Joe Pa and drat PENN STATE!

My question is this: If an older woman who likes younger men is a Cougar, is an older man who likes younger men a Nittany Lion?

Once again, IAB shows it is clearly misinformed in the caption it decides to use.

Joe Paterno was made a scapegoat by the board of trustees. He was told about misconduct of a staff member and reported it to his superiors, exactly what he should have done. It was his superiors that decided to cover it up. And we still don`t know the extent of Paterno`s knowledge of the incident. Him getting fired is just the board of trustees trying to save face.

    @msieg:

Let`s break that down. Joe Paterno knew about one of his coaches raping little boys. He told his boss. His boss did nothing. WHY DIDN`T HE THEN TELL POLICE?! He hid it, and was just as guilty. Aiding and abetting a rapist.

@auburnjunky: We don`t know how much Paterno knew. Prove he knew it. Find a source. You can`t. Just judging by the character that we`ve seen from Paterno in 61 years, I`m going to go ahead and say Paterno didn`t know the full extent of what was going on. If he did know, he would have said something.

I`d also like to point out that the assistant that allegedly SAW child molestation taking place STILL HAS HIS JOB.

@msieg: He has admitted to knowing, in the press conference where he said he would resign at the end of the season, he said it was made aware to him some time ago.

@auburnjunky: There was no press conference. Paterno`s statement about resigning at the end of the season doesn`t say anything about what he knew, though he acknowledges that he wished he had done more. The grand jury report says Paterno only knew vague details given to him by another assistant.

JoePa was made a scapegoat. And if he was fired because he didn`t go to police, why does McQueary still have a job? Doesn`t add up.

@ AJ - Paterno didn`t witness anything. People are pissed he didn`t go to the cops with a story he didn`t see. Someone told him they saw something funny, so he told his boss about it. Colleges have their own police forces so telling the Dean is telling the defacto Chief of Police.

Why isn`t the media going after the guy who actually did withness the crime? Because he`s not famous enough to bother reporting on.

Gerry1of1- Telling a university cop is NOT the same thing as telling the chief of police, or ANY real cop. He may not have seen anything, but he heard reports of child abuse. Common sense dictates that you tell a cop- not some rent-a-badge at your school.
As for these morons who feel impassioned to riot, I guess that American universities have gone from the S.D.S(Students for a Democratic Society), to the S.R.P.(Students for Rapist Pedophiles). Almost makes me happy that upon graduating, these morons will be tens of thousands of dollars in debt for years, and come away with a substandard education. But really, what price can you put on four years of post high school partying?

AJ, this is the one time I`ll disagree with you.

But regardless of what has happened, and what didn`t happen, Paterno was made a scapegoat.
Had Paterno gone to the proper authorities with hearsay, which does not hold up in a court of law, they would have a) laughed their asses off and sent him away, or b) launch an investigation about it, which would piss off Paterno`s boss, and the hire ups, resulting in him getting canned anyway. He was damned if he did and he`s being damned for not doing.

And this is why Pitt is better.

Auburnjunky and I agree on...well, we don`t agree on just about anything...but we agree on this.

If you think Joe Paterno was unjustly fired because he didn`t know enough about what what his child-raping assistant coach was doing for 23 years, you have your head up your ass.

CaptKangaroo - Standard policy in any school, you report to the Principal / Dean / Whoever`s in charge and they call the cops. He reported someone told him they saw someone else "rough housing" with boys.

But the media isn`t paying any attention to the guy who actually walked in on and witnessed this. No they`re following and herassing a 3rd party. A NON-witness? How much sense does that make?

I`m not easy on pedo-pervs. Shoot them in the balls. But let`s not make a villain out of some harmless old man.

If someone came to me and said "Hey I saw a guy raping a little boy." I`d tell him to call the cops. Then, I`d go find the guy who did the deed, pop him in the mouth, and call the cops myself.

There is no chain of command when little kids lives are at stake.

As a Big 10 student myself, I can say it`s sad to see the legend of Joe Pa fired. The Penn State board did what they had to do though. I just hope Paterno`s legacy is known through his 46 years of service to the Nittany Lions.

Defending Paterno isn`t acceptable. Perhaps some of you don`t have the full story, but you`re an absolute idiot if you know Paterno was told of an incident, but failed to put Sandusky in a full body cast.

Listening to ESPN radio, and a Pittsburgh reporter is now claiming Sandusky was pimping out these boys to high profile individuals.

Paterno is the Pope of his catholic church, and when the Pope does nothing when one of his cardinals goes a raping, he deserves a lot more than a firing. Ideally, Sandusky won`t be the only man seeing a jail cell.

Alot of people commenting seem misinformed. Joe Pa was very good friends with this man for over 30 years, Sandusky was his heir apparent. There is no way Joe didn`t notice things in all those years especially since he was ALWAYS with young boys everywhere he went and having them spending the night at his home. I suggest before making comments go read the 23 page Grand Jury report. On more than one occasion Sandusky`s activity`s were reported. The response from Paterno and the others was to take his locker room keys and ban him from bringing kids on campus. This man was more concerned about protecting his legacy than protecting those kids. I don`t think Paterno is a bad guy I just think he made very bad choices. He was the Captain of the ship, all this happened on his watch, he had to go, they had to clean house.
And the Assistant who witnessed the shower incident still has a job because he is the whistleblower they can`t fire him.

Gerry1of1- Hitler`s thugs used something of the same excuse. Didn`t sit well with me then, doesn`t sit well with me now.
Also, with the extremely poor history of ALL colleges and universities- and their rentacops- regarding rapes, which is fairly common knowledge, I`m sure that Barney Fife would fit right in.
So, given your chain of command theory, what does one do after reporting to university officials, and nothing has changed? Shrug it off and say "oh, well"? Or see to it that a threat is properly investigated and removed?
Bottom line, sports programs tout building moral character, but are all but absent.

@msieg007, I guess we`ll have to agree to disagree. Like I said, I don`t think Paterno is a bad guy, but in my opinion he could have done more. Honestly though with a scandal of this magnitude, the University had to clean house and get rid of all involved, this is already a huge black eye for Penn State.

"I did. And Joe Paterno should not have been fired."

You much be a fracking wuss then. Really? "Oh no, I told my boss, my hands are clean of it!" Grow a pair. Paterno knew it was happening, and refused to stop it. He said as much.

There`s a reason Sandusky will end up in a special prison. Sometimes the real world needs a little prison justice, and Paterno along with the whole Penn State crew (Yes, McQueary should be fired as well) lacked the manhood to administer it, let alone stop the reason it was necessary.
