Link: It`s A Bird, It`s A Plane....No! It`s A Chair! - Toshiba needed a chair flown to the edge of space & filmed. This is how a small volunteer aerospace company got it there

Very cool, yes - but, as I understand it, it`s basically a remake of Escape Vehicle No 6 by Simon Faithfull.

    Original by Faithfull:

Here`s the one by Toshiba`s ad agency:

The Toshiba one is of higher quality, but I think they should`ve given props to Simon.

@nospoons: I`m not in the film industry, but I`ve had several clients who are in it.

They`ve all told me that CGI`s a very poor substitute for live filming. It should only be done sparingly - and not when the element is on the screen for a long time, is moving, in changing lighting conditions, and (this is not relevant here) of an organic nature.

Again, I`m not an expert - but I do agree that CGI is overused.

OK, this is cool for a "Behind The Scenes" video and the simple fact they damn near put a chair in space with a f**king balloon, but that`s it. I`m sure CGI would be a cheaper alternative to make a commercial like this, not to mention they probably had to use CGI anyway to remove the strings & sh*t attached to the chair for the finished product.

@whodat6484: I doubt it`d be cheaper to do it CGI, as that would require skilled professionals who would demand pay. This commercial - or at least the launching of the chair itself - was done largely by volunteers who normally work with this guy`s aerospace company but, in this case, launched a chair.

If you`ll look at my comment below, you`ll see a link to the actual commercial - and you`ll notice that they DON`T remove the strings from the commercial. They`re not trying to make this look like a self-floating chair; it`s just an interesting situational concept.

This was pretty neat. James May`s Man Lab (2) did something similar, sending the cremated remains of Budgie #35 the budgie and Tommy the Cat up into space. Bit more interesting, but quite long.

Whodat, are you going to the mall next month to tell all the kids that santa isn`t real? It`s a chair in space. It`s cool. It`s novel. Enjoy it and be jealous you didn`t think of it first. Now I have to find something unique to put in space...and I`m not even gonna youtube it!
