...it`s not mace, it`s pepper spray. mace is a chemical. pepper spray is concentrated cayenne peppers and vegetable oil. The effects last 30 minutes.

And it`s not that the protesters expect nothing to happen, it`s that they HOPE this exact thing will happen. They are purposefully putting themselves in conflict with police in order to further this idea that the police are being heavy handed. I say drat it, let these hipster d-bags destroy their cities, schools, etc. Let`s see them rebuild the world with their expert knowledge of hackey sack and mid-20th century poetry.

@jtrebowski - Police mace might be stronger but it behavior is the same, my other post still stands. As for her, no, she was arrested though which people with OWS are still crying about, the problem with OWS portesters is that they think NOTHING will happen to them so the slightest little thing becomes a big deal.

Portesters in other countries are dieing and are being beaten in the streets to the point of blood gushing from their heads, yet americans are crying over pepper pray, tear gas and being arrested.

Which would you rather deal with? Pepper spray? or getting the crap kicked out of you or worse?

Yeah those hippies did, but we need more punks in the movement, I`m headed to occupy ottawa to drat up some cops for doing this poo, like honestly if I saw that I`d be on him so fast it would make somebody proud!

@illlios: What you also forgot is that the mace average citizens are allowed to carry is not nearly as strong as the mace cops carry. That being said, the students are simply engaging in civil disobedience, which is often an effective and necessary tactic. Would you have supported pepper spraying Rosa Parks?

@number696969 - Way to only look at an 8th of a sentence.

Mace = Is not permenent, is non leathal, Long term side effects are extremely rare, the pain is temporary, effects can be nulified quickley with milk, or water....Yet with the way people cry about it here you`d think they were gunned down, it`s NOT a big deal, a few hours of discomfort.

Mace is NOTHING like a gun, to which also getting a permit for a gun is a lot harder then that of mace and (assuming places are doing their job) not everyone is eligible to carry a gun..So sorry dude, fail.

`It`s not permanent, and it`s not that big of a deal, i don`t see why people whine and cry so much over pepper spray, if it where THAT BAD they wouldn`t allow EVERYONE to carry it. `

You mean like guns?

How about being responsible and not putting the police in that position. The OWS protesters need to go home and be a positive part of society. Instead of the eyesore of America!

@icklevamp - Like it or not, they are breaking the law by failing to comply with a police order, after being warned police are told to use force, Mace is but a small part of that force.

It`s not permanent, and it`s not that big of a deal, i don`t see why people whine and cry so much over pepper spray, if it where THAT BAD they wouldn`t allow EVERYONE to carry it.

It`s a little disturbing that so many people here are applauding the fact that we, in the United States, no longer have rights.

We have privileges that may be revoked whenever convenient.

A person should not be expected to give up his rights because of the threat of legal consequences or physical violence.

A person should not fear for his personal safety simply for not complying with police orders, especially when he is in the legal right.

I graduated from UCDavis and that particular place was the Quad (large open air lawn of the campus), at what seems to be the middle of it. They really arn`t in anyone`s way as you have 100m in either direction to walk around them. Also the officer`s name is listed in the article of the school paper... which is the link provided below (remove the spaces).

The First Amendment`s "right of the people peaceably to assemble" clearly means little or nothing to you."

Those places you mentioned DON`T use rubber bullets! "peaceably assemble?" Everyone has a right to peaceably assemble. They DON`T have a right to "occupy or impede other people`s rights to live THEIR lives in the way they want. Public parks are for EVERYONE to use. They have run everyone else out. Then they try to occupy PRIVATE property, and college campuses that have a mission to educate their students. Disrupting the campus warrants that they be dispersed...they didn`t leave peacefully....they knew what was coming....it came.

Interesting how so many people dislike those engaged in peaceful protest- but only because they disagree with what they protest about. That is most likely because they are far to lazy and smug to care about much except themselvs?

Just curious....WHEN did any of those protests reach the level of obnoxiousness that these anal pores have reached? When did they make PUBLIC parks and PRIVATELY owned areas unusable for law abiding citizens? When did they acheive the level of lawlessness and crime at their protests? When were there as many rapes and personal injury assaults at THEIR protests?

The cops should have arrested the whole crowd, or at leasted dispursed them with spray and rubber bullets...
Notice how the lefties want the cops DEAD or wounded, and the righties only want the criminals to be lawfully arrested... except for one guy who wanted machine guns... lolz!

And ffs, at one point the police is going to have to carry these people off, and then we`ll have another QQ about how horrible the police treats people and how violent they are.
THEY chose to sit there, it`s THEIR own responsibility and THEY have to take the consequences of their actions... Ofc. we can protest but if you`re doing something illegal at the same time the police will have to do their job... Quit whining!

So it seems the general understanding among the police is that it`s a standard method of summary punishment for people who won`t abandon their rights when asked by an officer.

If these protests achieve nothing more than a review of the policies regarding non-lethal force, then they have done a lot.

It appears they are blocking an entrance. Illegal in most US States. So, breaking the law means enforcement of it must be carried out, if they didn`t leave once asked, there`s another law broken. Now were on to non-lethal, non-physical force.. OC is that step.

Oh, and you think "force" is pepper spray. No, force is much worse than that.

One more thing, do you REALLY think police REALLY GIVE A drat that they have to prove something? I`d bet they rather be at home or on an easy patrol rather than put up with this drek.

Seriously, stop ACTING so oppressed!

"drating pig. Pepper spray is supposed be used on people who are a physical threat. Not people who are PEACEFULLY protesting, sitting down. drat Cops. ACAB!"

Did you write the rules on when and where pepper spray should be used?

the use of force model where I come from would have these protesters labelled as passive resistant. Under Ideal conditions intermediate weapons should not be used unless the subject is being actively resistant. In pressure point and control tactics they do teach a different way of handling this situation (Pain compliance with pressure points). However I wasnt there and many things come into play when making decisions like these.

civil disobedience is still disobedience. Passive resistance, is still resistance. If the cops or someone tell you that your doing something wrong and you have to leave, then you have to leave. 5-6 cops are going to have a hard time picking up and dragging 40+ people away for refusing to move. If this finally gets them to move, then they accomplished what they were supposed to do.

You only see the picture, not what goes on before the picture. My father, who is a cop for where I grew up still, told me how it goes

"You give them warning, you repeat multiple times that they are on private property and must leave or force will be used, including mace or other deterrents to get them to disperse. If they do not after a certain amount of time, something like this will occur."

This is no one`s fault but their own.

BS, there is no excuse for this. All the protesters are sitting down. Pepper spray is used to subdue an assailant. Assailants are typically standing up and advancing toward you. A pepper sprayed assailant will fall to the ground, at which point the spray has done its job. If you continue spraying you are no longer protecting yourself; you are now assaulting a defenseless person.

we are just seeing one side of it. not sure why they are in a pile like that. passive resistance only works when the other people don`t have sticks and mace. and you would think they would learn. or will they cry out that the cops maced them, even though they were probably asking for it.
