hahahahahahhahahahaha oh... Republicans....

How do they even still exist as a political party?

It`s amazing that America has some of the most brilliant and creative people, and then there are the Republicans.

there is no right to happiness.

he wants to take away even more jobs. and give kids access to all the schools goods. here you go sonny, here`s the key to every room in the school. we will pay you min wage for it even.

boy he would suck as president, at least he doesn`t have 999

The best thing about getting kids to work is that the mine shafts can be made smaller and that means less cost to the mining industry...Mr. Gingrich forgot to mention that positive thing...

I`ll bet he is racist, wants to starve the children after working them, and wants to kick their grandmothers out into the street too!

@AJ: Thanks for the response. Sorry for the late reply. I`ve been suffering IAB fatigue lately. Hope you and and your family have a good Thanksgiving.

Re: the *Dreams from My Father* quote, I think what`s being revealed is a person who has a fierce desire to be liked and accepted. That personality trait, coupled with his being half-black, made him particularly vulnerable to the charge of being a "sell-out"--mainly, because the charge was true. To deflect that charge, he briefly hung out with the "cool" anti-establishment stock characters on the college campus. It was a calculated, political move for expediency--and not all that different from what he did with progressives and liberals years later with his "Hope" and "Change" campaign.

The party that`s working tirelessly to protect "job-creators" from tax increase or even tax reform suggesting that we fire working adults and replace them with cheaper child labor.

Oh cool, are we all going to get a little black house boy to polish our floors? Think of the money we`d save on electricity.

LOL, just try telling high school kids they have to clean up the school. Not to mention potential lawsuits that would inevitably result from misuse or even proper use of janitorial equipment. Who is going to provide insurance for a student that gets injured using a floor waxer or some-such? Not Newt, that`s for sure.

I don`t necessarily disagree with Newt on this as long as it is a CHOICE to work and there`s nothing coercive about it. But like MCMXCIII said: what can be abused probably will.

I started working to earn my own money at age 12, mowing lawns, raking leaves, painting, moving furniture. Of course it wasn`t full-time everyday and I don`t expect that Gingrich is advocating full-time work for kids, but kids should learn that hard work both pays and empowers them.

I`m amazed at the parade of blowhards that earn TV airtime as contenders of the republican nomination who then bloviate nonsense that will never become reality because none of them will ever be president.

I think it`s a fairly decent idea. Except the students should be rotated daily/weekly/monthly so they all have to clean the school instead of just a few.

Bear in mind that what can be abused will be abused. There are parents who are willing to sell their children for some drugs, and there are companies that have no problem taking in said children for greater benefits. Child labor laws are necessary measures to prevent such tragic from happening.

"To avoid being mistaken for a sellout,I chose my friends carefully. The more politically active black students. The foreign students. The Chicanos. The Marxist Professors and the structural feminists and punk-rock performance poets. We smoked cigarettes and wore leather jackets. At night,in the dorms,we discussed neocolonialism,Franz Fanon,Eurocentrism, and patriarchy. When we ground out our cigarettes in the hallway carpet or set our stereos so loud that the walls began to shake,we were resisting bourgeois society`s stifling constraints. We weren`t indifferent or careless or insecure. We were alienated." - Barack Obama

so we should fire the current janitors that have responsibilities (like food and bills and families and houses), hire kids, apparently younger then 15, to work with hazardous chemicals and repair buildings, plumbing, and electricity that they have no idea how to. They are to do all this instead of studying to move up in the world.

Sounds like Salamander Gingrich does not the nation`s poorest to rise up to do anything. Sounds like he wants them to scrub his toilets and that is about it.

If the school system is failing how about we try vocational schools? Teach a trade? Not all people are born with the mind for academic work. But all people were born with the right to have opportunity. Let`s educate for opportunity through vocational schools!

Doubtful. All they have to do is bring up Obamacare, which has a disapproval rating approaching 70% of ALL US CITIZENS, and Obama will be left stuttering.

He is a Marxist that wants to change America into a Socialist state. He covers it up with pretty talk for his followers. Wake up.

Among Rep. primary voters. This is the season of the great anointing, when Republicans talk to each other over who is most worthy to become party standard bearer.

Look for some of the more hair raising things they say to become more muffled or outright scrapped when they start having to talk to the nation at large.

Gingrich is truly a d*ck, but I have no problem with what he`s proposing. I worked since age 13 at various jobs, from mowing lawns to maintaining golf course fairways. There`s nothing cruel about it, and I got to spend my OWN money on whatever I wanted.

Aj, how so?

Gingrich w/ his emotional red meat talking points circa 1994?

Cain shouting 999 at the top of his lungs?

Romney deciding which face he`d like to wear that day? (Pro choice or Pro Life? Pro Romneycare in Mass. great grandaddy of the hated "Obamacare" or not? Pro union or anti Union?)

The Rep. field is underwhelming, even for staunch rock ribbed Neo Cons and everybody knows it.
child labor laws protect kids from exploitation in Nike factories. It allows them the oportunity to go to school. Also, Supply& Demand applies to workers as well.
There are PLENTY of other places where children are useful. Go with my suggestion, seriously we don`t need completely bar them from the work force.

@Markust: Obama would get destroyed by Gingrich, Cain, and Romney.

Also, what`s wrong with what Newt is saying here? I would have loved to have an after school job when I was 12. Imagine making $7.25 an hour from 3pm to 7pm 5 nights a week. drat yeah!

Why not? The goal was to keep children out of manufacturing jobs. Labor standards back then were horrific but now they`re better. I suggest though give them jobs which test their mental abilities and not something so menial.
Yes... let`s put the peasant`s kids to work! Wahahaha! Make them clean toilets instead of getting educated for free.

Better yet, send them back to the coal mines! After all... child labor is so much more effective than paying an adult to do it. They`re all such hard little workers that require no supervision. Better yet, those kids are just so easy to exploit! We could pay them in gumballs.
That`s all I heard. Did I miss anything?

M Archer, child labor laws protect kids from exploitation in Nike factories. It allows them the oportunity to go to school. Also, Supply& Demand applies to workers as well. With all that labor gone, employers have to pay the adult laborers more to keep them. Child labor laws are what kept you out of coal mines and factories when you were 9.

Also, Newt isn`t talking about 3rd world, he`s talking about making the U.S. into a 3rd world country. First he wants to get rid of minimum wage, now put children back in the labor force. How long before he proposes the 14 hour day with 1 day off every other week?

Unions created income inequality?
Child labor laws are stupid?
Let`s stigmatize the poor kids by making them clean the toilets. Good idea.

I`m not sure too sure about the rest of this, but I agree that child labor laws need to be abolished. It`s only rich people in Western countries that cry out for these laws, while poor people suffer. In lots African and Asian countries, families RELY on the income that their kids bring in.

So it`s wrong to allow a 13 or 14 yr. old to wash dishes, operate a cash register or do light janitorial work if they want to earn extra money?
This is not about forcing children to work in coal mines or sweat shop factories, it`s about teaching young teens a strong, healthy work ethic that will help them prepare for their adult lives and give them the ability to succeed in the endeavors they pursue.

Is it a teacher`s fault if a school is failing when 75% of the students are ELL and when there isn`t a budget for ELL aids?
Is it a teacher`s fault when a school is not given the funding for materials?
Is it a teacher`s fault when schools cannot afford books in usable condition?
Is it a teacher`s fault when federal mandates like NCLB (by Bush) rip out shop and skill-based classes?
Is it a teacher`s fault when a student-mother has to support two children and attend class?

Lastly... he wants kids to work.
Is it a teacher`s fault when 14 year old students are either prostitutes or dealing every evening?

I guess that poor student performance is the fault of poor teachers after-all.

wow- so no union rules for the children then? Not that he thinks it matters- few kids die using the chemicals and machinery used to clean a school- well- only poor kids die- who cares? All the more for him...

Or, you could, you know, put money into education in America, and stop having schools that fail, and teachers that fail.

He`s so rich, he`s out of touch with reality.

I had a paper route when I was 8. At 10 I worked as a background actor (extra) until I reached high school (when it was impossible for me to keep missing classes).
There`s nothing wrong with a kid working. It teaches them how to save money at a young age. I still have a part-time job, but I have enough money saved up that will pay for my education, and also provide me with emergency money.
