I had a paper route when I was 8. At 10 I worked as a background actor (extra) until I reached high school (when it was impossible for me to keep missing classes).
There`s nothing wrong with a kid working. It teaches them how to save money at a young age. I still have a part-time job, but I have enough money saved up that will pay for my education, and also provide me with emergency money.

Or, you could, you know, put money into education in America, and stop having schools that fail, and teachers that fail.

He`s so rich, he`s out of touch with reality.

wow- so no union rules for the children then? Not that he thinks it matters- few kids die using the chemicals and machinery used to clean a school- well- only poor kids die- who cares? All the more for him...

Is it a teacher`s fault if a school is failing when 75% of the students are ELL and when there isn`t a budget for ELL aids?
Is it a teacher`s fault when a school is not given the funding for materials?
Is it a teacher`s fault when schools cannot afford books in usable condition?
Is it a teacher`s fault when federal mandates like NCLB (by Bush) rip out shop and skill-based classes?
Is it a teacher`s fault when a student-mother has to support two children and attend class?

Lastly... he wants kids to work.
Is it a teacher`s fault when 14 year old students are either prostitutes or dealing every evening?

I guess that poor student performance is the fault of poor teachers after-all.

So it`s wrong to allow a 13 or 14 yr. old to wash dishes, operate a cash register or do light janitorial work if they want to earn extra money?
This is not about forcing children to work in coal mines or sweat shop factories, it`s about teaching young teens a strong, healthy work ethic that will help them prepare for their adult lives and give them the ability to succeed in the endeavors they pursue.

I`m not sure too sure about the rest of this, but I agree that child labor laws need to be abolished. It`s only rich people in Western countries that cry out for these laws, while poor people suffer. In lots African and Asian countries, families RELY on the income that their kids bring in.

    Child labor laws are stupid?
Let`s stigmatize the poor kids by making them clean the toilets. Good idea.

M Archer, child labor laws protect kids from exploitation in Nike factories. It allows them the oportunity to go to school. Also, Supply& Demand applies to workers as well. With all that labor gone, employers have to pay the adult laborers more to keep them. Child labor laws are what kept you out of coal mines and factories when you were 9.

Also, Newt isn`t talking about 3rd world, he`s talking about making the U.S. into a 3rd world country. First he wants to get rid of minimum wage, now put children back in the labor force. How long before he proposes the 14 hour day with 1 day off every other week?

Yes... let`s put the peasant`s kids to work! Wahahaha! Make them clean toilets instead of getting educated for free.

Better yet, send them back to the coal mines! After all... child labor is so much more effective than paying an adult to do it. They`re all such hard little workers that require no supervision. Better yet, those kids are just so easy to exploit! We could pay them in gumballs.

That`s all I heard. Did I miss anything?

It`s the parents. A lot of parents suck and raise children that are a useless nuisance. They should have learned a good work ethic at home from a parent. Expecting them to learn good work ethics on the job is not going to solve the problem of useless people raising useless children. They are arrogant, ignorant, lazy part of our society. Among Rep. primary voters. This is the season of the great anointing, when Republicans talk to each other over who is most worthy to become party standard bearer.

Look for some of the more hair raising things they say to become more muffled or outright scrapped when they start having to talk to the nation at large.

If the school system is failing how about we try vocational schools? Teach a trade? Not all people are born with the mind for academic work. But all people were born with the right to have opportunity. Let`s educate for opportunity through vocational schools!

so we should fire the current janitors that have responsibilities (like food and bills and families and houses), hire kids, apparently younger then 15, to work with hazardous chemicals and repair buildings, plumbing, and electricity that they have no idea how to. They are to do all this instead of studying to move up in the world.

Bear in mind that what can be abused will be abused. There are parents who are willing to sell their children for some drugs, and there are companies that have no problem taking in said children for greater benefits. Child labor laws are necessary measures to prevent such tragic from happening.

Re: the *Dreams from My Father* quote, I think what`s being revealed is a person who has a fierce desire to be liked and accepted. That personality trait, coupled with his being half-black, made him particularly vulnerable to the charge of being a "sell-out"--mainly, because the charge was true. To deflect that charge, he briefly hung out with the "cool" anti-establishment stock characters on the college campus. It was a calculated, political move for expediency--and not all that different from what he did with progressives and liberals years later with his "Hope" and "Change" campaign.
