    DixxyRarr:

Some castles do, some don`t. I`ve been to a few and none of them had moats (in most cases because they were on top of high ground for defence).

Yup, thats about as English as a headline gets. If people were queueing outside to moan about it, it would have been perfect.

I`ve had a few dogs/bitches myself so nothing unusual there ....I`m thinking the oddity here is the location ....dry moat ...why was it dry? Where did all the water go ?

@pumba62 Dry moats are just as effective as watery moats really, it`s still a big ditch to stop people getting in, moats still wouldn`t be the best way of stopping people getting in though.

pumba62, I have a bead on a place that can provide you with a good selection of cats. You can even use them as a pecker-warmer.

I`m thinking the oddity here is the location ....dry moat ...why was it dry? Where did all the water go ?

It might have been drained at some point during the centuries since castles were defensive. Dry moats require far less maintainance than filled ones and they`re safer.

It might never have had water in it, i.e. it was built as a very big ditch. Ditches have always been used in defences, because they work.

Also, a fair few castles were never really defensive strongholds anyway. More a way of flaunting your wealth and power. A dry moat would be fine for that. It puts your stamp on the land and lets you have that archetypal image of a castle - a drawbridge.

Dry moats were an actual defensive measure, they were sometimes filled with stakes or spike to make approaching the castle (or camp or whatever) more difficult but often just a large ditch was enough to play havoc with troop movements and siege engines such as battering rams and siege towers. Filling the moat with water was a later innovation which helped to deter mining.

It wasn`t always practical to fill a moat with water, usually moats will filled by diverting a nearby river but if your castle is on a hilltop that won;t really help.

The English are only offended by it happening in the moat, the rest is Jolly-well OK, eh?

It would be tolerable if the moat in question wasn`t part of an English Heritage site. Using an English Heritage site for canine jollification shows insufficient respect for the past and that just isn`t on.
