He says he wants to live in that THING after college? Yeah, plan on living alone because no girl with any drating brains is going to want to move in there. Buy a car like a normal kid!

Yep, that`s about the size of my first Flat...it works, until you have Kids.

I plan on one day having a tiny house too. Imagine buying a plot of land that has 4 or 5 of these on it. You could maybe rent them out to students or something.

@mcfudge I`m a project manager for a Contracting company, and you wouldn`t BELIEVE the amount of restrictions and permits that are required to build ANYTHING. Even on your own property. Yes I`m Canadian, but we`ve been building across North America for 40+ years.

@Gerry1of1 if you use too much light-weight materials on a building that small, there won`t be anything holding it down during a big storm... Especially since it`s on wheels.

@Essersmith

This is America, where you can pretty much build whatever the hell you want.

Anyone here know where to read up on american construction law?
Because hes above the leagal limit for construction size here in scandinavia. And by above the legal limit i mean his 134 ft^2 (12.5 m^2) house/trailer is 26ft^2 (2.5 m^2) "too big" and he would need a construction permit from the goverment. Im guessing making it a trailer circumvents that issue.

Otherwise pretty cool use of his time.

He should have researched light weigh framing materials.
It`s going to be really heavy to pull.

But on the other hand, it`s better than what I was doing at his age in my spare time.

Welll....for one it`s nice that he has a hobby...but...it`s a really expensive crappy trailer is what it is.

Over all, a decent design and a great idea. I commend him for the project. He`s accomplished quite a lot.

Just a few observations:

$2,000 for that trailer? He got screwed.

$12,000 to complete? Not exactly a business man.

Needs more diagonal support if he`s going to tow it faster than 35mph.

Draculya-"The government would hate it."

Don`t worry, the government will get its taxes. It will require a tag (taxes). He pays taxes on the building material. He will pay taxes if he rents at a trailer park. He (or someone) will pay taxes on water, sewer and power. (not to mention, if they got pissed I doubt this construction would pass inspection as per Federal National Manufactured Housing Construction and Safety Standards.)

Nothing new. It`s called a TRAILER. They have these big parks where people live in them, called trailer parks. Generally reserved for the not-so-successful of us (to be kind). Neither cool, nor original, but at least he built it himself. Have fun, kid!

Is he powering his entire house from an extention cord?? Hope he dosen`t want to run much electronics or I forsee a fire.

2x4 rafter and joists=no good.
Plus he framed it like a stationary house. his framing will never stand up to the type of forces that towing it will subject it to. Looks like a death trap to me.

This is REALLY awesome and I totally commend this kid for it, but his layout puzzles me. There doesn`t seem to be a lot of space between the shower/toilet and then the kitchen area. It seems like the "bathroom" will be literally on to of the kitchen...and will there be WALLS separating the bathroom from the kitchen?? It didn`t look like it. Also, how is he taking this house to college??? What campus would allow you to bring a mini home on wheels. A college wants to make money, they WANT you to pay for living in a dorm. They aren`t going to let this kid park his own tiny house on campus for free. And if he parks it OFF campus it wont be free either. Where is he going to find a spot that has a water and electrical hook up???

jkfld, I`d love to live in one!

Anywy, I`m sure he got a good experience out of it, but I doubt there are a great many colleges where you can simply camp on site in your tiny trailer house ...

This is awesome! His own work, skills learnt from looking it up, or getting help from other workers in the industry, a hell of a lot, less college (uni right, not the uk colleges?) loan/debt from accomodation.

Why can`t centres be set up for the unemployed to go and build these things for the homeless. No they`re not like having a normal house, but it`s a house no less, and I`m guessing it`s a caravan base that he used, and wood makes the house better than the plastic from caravans.
I see only good coming from this! (and I love him for recycling, and minimising waste too!)

The only problem i see are the tires. Leaving tires on the same place for long time is not a good idea. Since he still need 2 years before to move that house a good idea could be to put some block of wood under the trailer and taking out tires until the house is finish.

This is the American dream version 2.0. Living the life without the debt.

The government would hate it. Less spending means less jobs, less debt (less money), less tax. It`s hard to track and police people with no fixed abode. Hard to draft people that they can`t find.

The Romany gypsies and travellers, the Bedouin and Inuit and all the other nomadic peoples have been settled for this reason.

Uh... heat, electrical, septic, moisture barriers, kitchen?

And not even his own designs, all he did was frame some walls...

@hot4teachey
because the requirements to head a construction company are being able to use a miter saw and a nail gun?

To every1 who wants to see the finished product, it`s right here because this is not his own idea. The people who want to help you live more affordably want to charge you $859 to download the PDF of the plans lol...

The thing that`s supposed to be impressive is that his estimated cost is something like half of what the designer estimated. To me that means he`s either REALLY cheap and his is going to be a really pooty version or he`s about as qualified as the people who made the cost estimations for the Concorde.

The major stuff for me would be taking care of the waste, getting water to the place, and possibly power.

But that`s just me. Props to the kid!

Implying that this is some sort of new idea...

There have been schematics on the internet for this ever since the internet began.

You judgemental drats. He just built himself a physical resume. He could be the head of a construction company easily.

i don`t see why everyone is hating on the guy. he`s building himself a house. yeah it`s not a full sized house but it`s still really impressive.

and to those saying he should study so he can get a good job to buy a house, he already would make a good construction worker if he really wanted to.

He`ll probably burn it down
smoking pot or something

If he just used his time on getting a job
or studying, instead of building a 1/2 room
house, he could buy a nice house and pay
the bills

Just saying

@Corydoras87; so what would you get for $50,000 (£31,000) in Germany? In the UK thats the average deposit on a house worth £120,000...

well in germany you can get real houses for around 50.000$ which isn`t such a horrendous multiplication of what he paid, plus you have a house that actually survives a storm
