This is as "racist" as wearing a crappy cowboy costume is racist. Just because it`s culturally inaccurate doesn`t mean it`s racist. So if I wear a cowboy costume covered in rhinestones and is entirely pink colored am I being racist towards Americans because cowboys don`t wear that?

Mmmmm, Japanese cat-girls...

dressing up as a geshia is not racist. a geshia is a performer, a profession that wears an easy to recognize style of clothing and makeup. this costume is no more racist than dressing up as a doctor or nurse. the girl isn`t trying to appeare asian. if this offends you grow up and get a life.

"she obviously doesn`t know the tradition of the geisha, one of refinement, intelligence, female grace, and sensual arts. if she knew it maybe she wouldn`t be offended."

That picture is obviously a mockery of Geisha. For someone who acts like she knows a lot about Geisha, you should know they don`t really look like that. Please don`t pretend like you know sh*t, your ignorance is showing.

What`s wrong with dressing up as a culture for Halloween? I say everyone who is planning on dressing up so make sure they dress up as offensively as possible. All the white people, dress as stereotypical black gangsters. All the black people dress up as geeky white WOW players. All the Asians should dress up as middle eastern terrorists and all the middle easterners should dress up as Asian nerds.

Get the f*ck over it! Don`t get offended, get a f*cking sense of humour.

While I agree with the Mexican one and especially the Arab-Terrorist one, I`m thinking the Geisha image is no more mocking Japanese people than the whole Ninja thing is. (Especially since I`ve seen Japanese people in Japan do this)

Okkkkk... obviously at face value this poster is talking about costumes, but really it`s pointing out that racism still exists... It`s using halloween as a context, (and that a geisha costume can be packaged as an asian costume etc) to make a point about it why has no one got that???

They seem to be under the impression that costumes = bad... just because people dress up as zombies, and ghosts, and "bad" things plenty dress as bunnies, cats, and inanimate objects. Costumes are meant to make us look like something else, nothing more. In fact, in this case it may be mimicry as a form of flattery. She may have chosen her costume because she is studying their culture and loves it. It`s all about context and these ads have none. Next time I see someone dressed as Abe Lincoln, or Elvis I`ll be sure to tell them they are racist. What do I say for MJ though, does he count as black or white?

Wait, thats not racist. I mean, I know that some people care, but jesus, just shut up.

We`re taught not to stereotype, but that means that we are taught not to be weary of the guy in the trenchcoat or the guy in tracksuits walking at us...it`s ridiculous, I dont care if you think this is racist.

I don`t understand how its racist to dress up as another race`s cultural icon/character. Unless that person hates the race/culture they are dressing up as, it isn`t racism. Stereotyping yes, but everyone stereo types whether they admit it or not. Its human nature to categorize.

Same reason every site accepts anything with just a tad of controversy: Pageviews.
Every pageview will earn the owner of the site a certain amount of money. More pageviews (because people start heated arguments) is more money.

They`d accept a picture of Hitler taking Anne Frank up the arse, and it`d be one of their best days ;)

The R and L switch is a linguistic phenomena that is well studied and documented. It happens when
Asian people switch to English. Black people actually do have a genetic difference from white people. They have a different shaped hair follicle. Native Americans were Asian at one point, Muslims once controlled half of civilization and are the reason Christians didn`t completely destroy all books and art in the middle ages, Jews had more money than most Germans before WWII, the Aryan race is from Iran... All documented factual racial and ethnic quirks. Stereotypes are there for a reason, and taking them too seriously is pointless.Avenue Q "Everyone`s A Little Bit Racist"

Lol at all white people going like "But what if a white person...", "Y U no post a x person dressed as...".

Whites are and can be the subject of racism, yet historically whites have been better and more efficient at it.

Racism towards whites shouldn`t be addressed juxtaposing other forms of racism, it`s just awkward and insensitive of the long history of white dominance that somehow still echoes among many generations.

I hate how almost anything a white person says can be taken to portray them as a racist, but nothing other races do can POSSIBLY be racist. Like people don`t want to be called black or the n word, but then calling us white or cracker is fine.

So here`s my question: The geisha is Japanese, but she does not look Japanese. Japanese tend to have light skin and rounder eyes. Her skin is darker and her eyes more hooded. She looks like she`s from Southeast Asia. So did they just pick a random Asian chick and tell her to be a representative for a specific Asian culture that she probably has no relation to without taking into account that not all Asian people look the same? Is she just the generic Asian stand in because they couldn`t differentiate among Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, or Thai? If so that`s super racist.

So my wife took an "ethnic studies" class for an elective.

One of the things she was taught was that it is impossible for a white person to be considered a minority, or to be included in a minority group., My wife asked if that would be true if there were less white people than a certain race. She was told, point blank, that a white person in a country full of non whites, is not a minority, and never will be.

So no. There will never be racial equality. Never, ever. Whites are drated.

"The color of the skin of the people you hate doesn`t determine the definition of the word"

Saying that "hate is hate regardless of race" is a meaningless platitude, because racism is a demonstrable cultural phenomenon, the root of which can be DIRECTLY CONFRONTED.

Racism is (obviously) defined as hate based on a particular race. So, if you hate a group of people because of skin color you are by DEFINITION racist. There are different flavors of hate, and not all are equal.

Hate of an individual is one thing and inevitable, but hate based an immutable characteristic of a group is culturally engrained and more damaging because it is directed at people based on something they cannot change, and combating racism is a worthy exercise if a culture is to strive for enlightenment.

You can`t root out people hating individuals for individual reasons. You CAN at least make progress in rooting out racism.

You know... I mentioned something like this in the post before this... so I guess I stand corrected.

Who the hell is doing these posters anyway? This girl isn`t even Japanese.

STARS? You mean those Special Ops forces from Resident Evil?

I better see one about a white girl here real soon or I`m calling racism. If you hate blacks, your racist; if you hate Indians, you`re a racist, if you hate white people, you`re STILL a F#cking racist! The color of the skin of the people you hate doesn`t determine the definition of the word. Hate is hate, no matter who its directed at.

As someone with a significant other who is non-Caucasian, I can say that Asian stereotypes are prevalent in our culture, and you laugh now until you see the actual hurt on a poor girl`s face when she realizes people look at her as "different," or are making fun of her. It makes me want to punch people in the face if it would make her feel better, but it hurts her nonetheless.

I`m all for anti-stereotyping public announcements, although we all know some can cross the line from poignant to corny very easily.

That picture isn’t a “costume,” it is a caricature – there is a difference. And many Asians do have a “culture,” rich and older than any European.

For anyone who sees this and thinks it’s ridiculous, just picture that the girl is the girl you love, and she is crying because some a$$hole made her feel different, or picked on her, or made an off-color racist joke...you wouldn’t be laughing then.

Actually that is a costume! If were not allowed to dress up in something that other cultures consider normal attire then no-one can go to "The Sound Of Music" dressed in lederhosen anymore unless your German/Austrian. I don`t want to live in that world. I agree the dumb white chick blacking up is ignorant and stupid, but come on. This is a fashion style, I have cowboy boots (not from watching brokeback mountain) and don`t consider them in any way to be a reflection on how cowboys live or act! This post is a major fail.
