And what do you make of carnivorous plants that eat insects, small reptiles, and rodents? Or plants that actively engage the world around them, such as trees that control ant populations by releasing chemical signals in times of need? Are they immoral compared to other plants who just sit there and soak up sunlight?

Just because you can half-ass a functional diet from only plants doesn`t make doing so any more moral than eating other animals. You`re still destroying other life to sustain your own. All you`re doing is drawing a perfectly arbitrary line over which lives you find acceptable to consume.

I believe animals should be treated well. I believe when the time comes, they should be killed quickly and painlessly. And then, I believe, they should be delicious.

No, a human eating a cow is nothing like a lion eating a zebra. When a lion is hunting it`s not thinking about what it could eat instead, or whether eating the zebra is necessary. Humans have the capacity for reason and we can logically reason that when there are viable alternatives at hand (that therefore necessitates the act of eating animals as unnecessary and not based on needs), eating animals is not the `right` thing to do, and is based on the same prejudice as racism etc.

Plants don`t have nervous systems, they can`t feel pain in any sense of the word and they have no needs other than those for the basic elements that constitute healthy growth.

Seeing as you made such fallible arguments I can`t really be bothered anymore. Apologies.

I`m sorry, but morality has nothing to do with it. Humans eat other animals. It`s part of what we evolved to do. Saying it`s immoral for a human being to eat a cow is like saying it`s immoral for a lion to eat a zebra or a spider to eat a fly.

But if want to play the "speciesist" card, you need to realize you`re making yourself out to be a hypocrite. Plants are every bit as alive as animals are, but you have no qualms about eating them. Where`s your so-called moral righteousness when it comes to your senseless slaughter of carrots and peas?

Leather is not necessary at all, the alternatives are perfectly viable and a lot cheaper and easier to make.

Maybe the part about oil is true, though it raises questions about our dependency on oil anyway rather than looking into alternatives. Not to mention the pollution that results from combustion.

All the other examples are completely superfluous and you have completely side-stepped the issue of the morality involved. The fact that we do kill and eat/use animals for our own `needs` is a blatant display of prejudice, which we all know boils down to discrimination based on an arbitrary characteristic such as skin colour, gender, age, or in this case, species.

Well, there`s leather, for one. And while yes, there are other fabrics available, leather has a combination of durability and versatility hard to match. Fake leather is made of oil products and is nowhere near as durable.

The fat from animals is often rendered into oil, which is a renewable source of fuel as a component of bio-diesel as well as used in many other products.

The guts and sub-prime trimmings from animals are rendered down to extract the oil, and the leftover product is used in pet food and other animal feeds.

The bones can also be used in animal feed, as well as being charred and crushed into carbon black, a pigment agent that sees a lot of use in paints, inks, and other products.

Feathers from chickens are used to stuff pillows and mattresses.

Nevermind that you eliminate all the cows and chickens, you have drastically lower sources of fertilizer to grow crops with.

@Yaezakura

You didn`t even mention any other uses besides meat, I`d like to hear what uses you`re thinking of that can`t be replicated without using animals.

I have nothing against genetically-engineered food, I think using less land to grow more crops has far more advantages than growing solely organic food.

I never said `cows and chickens` were the problem, my point was that indeed, the `idiot humans` are. The fact that we get less energy from consuming the animals raised on an acre of land than potential crops raised in the same acre was the point I was trying to illustrate.

America does try to give other countries food and they won`t accept it. Many African and some South Asian countries won`t accept our "mutant" foods. OK then... no desert and you can go to bed hungry.

and drive up our expenses so we can`t afford to donate as much? bulk buying isn`t an issue when you actually eat it all
If more people realised that instead of using land to raise animals for meat we should use that same land to grow crops, we`d have a far greater amount of food to go around. But no, let`s carry on being stupid.
Okay. Here`s a gun. Go on a rampage and end the lives of countless feed animals for no benefit.

But before you do, you may want to consider that cattle and other feed animals have uses beyond just food. We don`t strip the meat off and throw everything else away. Pretty much every single part of every feed animal is used, often for multiple different products that are part of daily life.

You know what the major drawback to food production is? Idiots who spread lies about genetically engineered crops being dangerous, causing developing countries not to use them. People who think "organic" crop-growing can actually sustain a growing world population.

Cows and chickens aren`t the problem. Idiot humans are.

I love how they attribute a huge portion of the problem to climate change, but they don`t even mention how corn used for biofuel and ethanol is consuming a huge amount of farm land and is an extremely high maintenance crop. Seems that our overreaction to climate change is doing more harm than climate change itself...

As for food waste in the west? That`s just down to laziness. Waste half a pizza cuz` you ordered too much? Whatever, it`s only $5. What is that to you? I see no way around this, other than educating people.

I hate to say it, but I agree with this. In this single instance, war is an acceptable solution, solely for the good of the people living there as opposed to any valuable natural resources that happen to be nearby.

Although perhaps a less radical solution would be of greater benefit? What if we were to classify widespread malnutrition as a crime against humanity, be it through malevolence or simply mismanagement. Then offer an ultimatum to those countries worst off. Internal patriotism be damned if it means saving lives.

Although I`d consider most of the governments in Africa not "corrupt" exactly, merely... inefficient. Perhaps all they need is a kick in the pants.

American waste is kinda even worse than what is shown. We have a lot of viable land that we could use for growing all sorts of crops but we don`t. This land is called " the front yard" or occasionally "side yard" or "back yard" but most people prefer it grow an ornamental plant that has little nutritional value called grass. Occasionally nutritional wild plants will grow in the grass, (called Dandelion, knotweed, clover, etc) which we then kill so we can have more grass. Hehe Those whacky Americans. :D

India has no excuse. No country that can afford a space program should have the amount of starving people India does. Oh and to be fair we can`t make the US scapegoat for this one; the same attitude exists all over Europe and the rest of the western world. It`s a global problem, and one country can`t be held to blame.

@ lukas1051 - Sure. Blame it on the Americans. Always expecting the U.S. of A. to bail out everything, them blaming us for sticking our nose in everywhere.

YOU my friend, are what`s wrong with the world. If you`re so concerned, go over here and feed them yourself. Stop bitching that I don`t.

Looks like there needs to be a fair distribution of food. Perhaps we should all occupy different cities and demand there be a more fair distribution of food... That sounds like a great idea.

This is a retarded presentation. The conclusion about "what you can do" will have little to effect on the starving people of developing nations. The heart of the problem is distribution. It is not economically feasible to distribute the food to those who need it. "Not wasting" the food doesn`t make it available to others. It just reduces the the supply (ie. less demand to the farmers).

I think, Kimrn89, what you are missing is that all the countries on that list have wasted food. It`s convenient to blame America, but that`s not the problem. The problem is that the food is not being shared worldwide to prevent hunger. What`s the goal of your finger pointing anyway? Everyone is guilty, not just Americans. Get over yourself and start doing something instead of finger pointing. You can hate America all you want, but until you actually DO SOMETHING, you`re just as lazy as the American you`re pointing your finger at.

Food is NOT the most vital need as living creatures. Oxygen is. If you can`t breathe, food doesn`t matter.

Anyway, I`m stuffed. I just ate half a pizza. I`ll put the other half in the fridge. Then, in three days , I`ll probably throw it away.

What? Am I supposed to feel bad or something?

It`s possible because some countries are richer than others. People who have a surplus treat it as a surplus. Surely that isn`t a surprise to anyone?

It`s not as though food is being deliberately moved around. That wasted surplus can`t just be moved to where there`s a shortage.

Also, nations with a surplus have spent vast amounts of resources trying to address the shortage in other nations. It`s been done on an international level (UN, etc), it`s been done on a national level by governments and it`s been done on an individual level by charitable work and donations.

And it doesn`t work any better than pouring water into a bath with a big hole in the bottom.

If you really want the problem fixed, you should advoate for conquest, occupation and rule of most the countries where it`s worst. The biggest problem those places have is their government or lack thereof.

I am not feeling too guilty as I scarf down my two-tacos-for-a-buck meal from Taco Bell.

In Sumalia and Sudan and all those war-torn countries in Africa we`ve tried to help. We sent money to buy food but their corrupt governments used it to buy arms. So we sent food directly which got sold for money to buy arms. Then we got smart and sent food directly to the refugee camps. As soon as the US, Red Cross or UN trucks pulled away, the government military or rebal guerillas drove in and took the food to sell for more arms.

India on the other hand has not excuse. Feed those slum dogs.
