@furryblob i do know because i owned 2 of the latest players on the market back then. The iphone was exactly the same but looked better. And for that privilege they charged you almost $100 extra.

lets not mention it comes with some of the most invasive software known to man. Looks like for all their "effort" they forgot to include simple drag and drop. Instead, they made/make you use their program to sync it, so they can keep an eye on what youre listening to.

"The smartphone/pc/Mp3 player market was doing fine when he came along."

Really? Did you see the mp3 market before the iPod? It was a mess, I owned a mp3 player back then the iPod was a total revolution compared to what was on offer. Same for the rest.

errm, but they do look good, nothing wrong with aesthetic products (now crippled form and function, another matter)
and now many other companies are making there products look good have with full form and function

---------
Theres nothing wrong with good looking products. It`s when the company charges twice as much as its competitors purely because of the looks thats the problem, and its sad that people blindly lap up all the spin in their droves.

Aw I found out about this while out and about on the internet on my iPhone... at work. I thought it was a joke since 56 is so young (for death), but I didn`t know about his previous health issues and all that. Sad day and I have nothing but nice thoughts for his family.

@mech, i wouldnt say retarded. Apple systems are very solid machines, however, they are vastly overpriced for what they are. You can buy a barebones pc of the same spec and install iOS on it for less than half of a macs cost.

Lets see some real facts:

Creator of the apple mac - steve wosniak
Creator of futore iphones/mp3`s - Apple R&D (jobs just signed the legal paperwork)

Moving manufacturing of apple products to third world countries to keep costs down, and selling high - Steve Jobs

Running a company that created over-priced and underpowered products (basically ripping people off) - Steve jobs

Allowing factories in 3rd world countries to mistreat their workers, and pay them so little, that they commit suicide - Steve Jobs.

Who decided to authorise an `upgrade` to a previous apple product that still underperforms to its competitors and technically can only just be called an upgrade, yet costs almost twice as much - Steve Jobs

Paying the board members and managers top rates, while paying the actual people who make the products a pittance - Steve Jobs.

Why exactly are people calling him a pioneer and a visionary again?

Totally agree, and the first other name that springs to mind is Amy Winehouse. Annoying little bint, sure, but I always find it a little sad when someone dies way too young. As long as they`re not a Nazi peadophile rapist Bieber fan, in which case all bets are off...

And if you do what I did last XMas, shopped for music players : There is still nothing out there as easy to use and as good as an iPod. You just have to be willing to pay Apple`s prices, but the quality of the product is definitely worth the extra $$.

It took Microsoft 3-4 years to release a competition for the iPod and it was a joke. Literally, people laugh at how ludicrous it is to own a zune to make an Anti-Apple statement.

I`m the farthest thing to an Apple fanboy, but I respect the quality that comes with the iPod. Mine`s been in my car for over 2 months, I took it out once to sync my new music to it.

(I`ve never bought an Apple product for myself, my 160Gb iPod Classic was a XMas gift from the GF)

"whilst it was the first really popular mp3 player, the ipod wasn`t anywhere near the first so could hardly be called years ahead of it`s time. "

You may have skimmed some of what I said. I never said the iPod was the first MP3 player. I said it was years ahead of its time in that it`s internal storage was 10x bigger than the conventional MP3 player, and it had a screen rather than a dot matrix interface, and it was easy to use. The biggest problem and still the biggest problem with it : You can`t copy/paste mp3 files onto your iPod and off your iPod as easily as you can with a conventional MP3 player. You have to sync your iPod to iTunes to add music, and you have to rip your music through 3rd party software to get your music off (should you need reformat you computer with no back-up for your music).

I think that the man is separate from the fandom, and that, unless he was truly an evil man (hint, he wasn`t) we ought to feel at least some sadness when someone dies, no matter how annoying their fans were.

Basically what FCMXD said, but I believe that, no matter our personal feelings on the person, we ought to offer condolences.

I was sort of sad when I heard he died so young, then I read an article claiming him to be the inventor of the personal computer.

I then remembered his greatest achievement of all: Inventing a large group of slack jaws that claim all of his most popular products were innovative when in reality they all had been done before.

I hope his most die hard fans go home and shut up about their overpriced apple junk.

Never bought a single Apple product in my life.
Yes I`ve used them, but it was mostly playing a game or listening to a song on a friend`s iPhone/iPod. And I was forced to use Macs in audio class (only ones Pro Tools was hooked up to) and learning basic editing with Final Cut Pro *shiver*. Hated it. (Avid FTW! ^__^V)
When iPods came along I never understood the hype. I liked my Zen Nano better. When I got sick of a song I could delete it right away. No need for it to hold 1000 of them. I still own a cheap mp3 player (my music taste has grown, and I wanted something with more memory). Get`s the job done and it`s small. The Zen still works great (after 6 years), and now my father uses it. Plus I rather splurge on good headphones.
Thought the colourful computers were cool when I was in middle school, but my love for it ended there.
RIP Mr. Jobs, you never got a cent out of me. Unless you count tuition fees for leaning your silly program...

It was a one man show all the way. Weather you wrongfully think the man was your god or you think that Jobs ripped off existing technology and resold it in shinier packaging to make mountains of profit doesn`t matter. It`s likely that because of this Apple will loose steam.

Unless they could make a martyr of him, which would be silly.

Anyway, I predicted this a few months back when we had the fake "Jobs is dead" thing. I also made a comparison between Apple and the NDP, not that anyone cares... so far they`re two sides of the same coin.

I don`t think the stock will drop, especially with the new news of the iphone 4s as as well as the availability on sprint carrier. if anything, the stock may dip after hours, but will not make any significant movements down, especially not enough for the average trader to make any money off it.

I preferred my old, tiny, Rio with it`s removable, replaceable, flash drive (Or whatever it was called back then) to my first Ipod. The Rio was lighter, even with the massive amount of rubber on it that allowed me to accidentally step on it or brush it up against a tree as I was running with it on my arm.

Sorry Batmanners but I have to disagree.... whilst it was the first really popular mp3 player, the ipod wasn`t anywhere near the first so could hardly be called years ahead of it`s time.

don`t get me wrong, I love my ipod and whilst i`ve had a few different makes i always go back to apple ipods for day to day usage....but they weren`t ahead of their time.

the old apple macs paved the way for home pcs, but the new ones offer nothing innovative other than style. I`ve managed teams supporting both pc`s and macs over the years and the real techies always pretty much dismiss macs for anything other than serious art design work.

the macs have always been way overpriced for what`s under the hood..... but kudos to the guy for selling them, he was a genius at branding and selling.

Jamie76, I can honestly call you an idiot.

Steve Jobs has been in the computer business since the `80s. Although Windows was always on the popular side during the 90`s, there is no doubt in my mind that Apple`s technology was superior, however, less user friendly.

And after 20+ years in the business, Apple came out with a product that was YEARS ahead of it`s time when the first gen iPod came out. The best mp3 players on the market at the time had less than 1 gig of memory space, the iPod offered 5 to 10, and it was fast and simple to use.

I have nothing but respect for what this man has brought to our world. I may not like his business/company, but he has made computer technology and internet available to everybody.

I think everyone knew it was going to happen sooner rather than later once he admitted he was too ill to continue as CEO of apple.

Whilst it`s sad that he`s died I think of all the great things he could have done with his money....but didn`t fulfill the potential that kind of money offers.

ah well.... so apple shares will dip for a while, but they`ll keep churning out the same old poo labelled as new and keep his legacy of rehashed tech going.

the best I can say for him is RIP. Jobs never innovated anything...he took existing tech and convinced you it was the best ever, when clearly there were better products on the market. he learned to tap into the all important 18-35 demo and sold them an idea rather than a true product. Android phones have had superior technology in them since they were released and proof of that is the fact the iphone 4s, released today JUST got voice command, something my android had two years ago...

Jobs died today and Apple got really sick and will not be far behind. Jobs WAS apple and that terrible showing by Cook today that pissed off buyers more than anything proves Apple`s run is over. which to me is great because now better products will have a chance to thrive w/o apple`s media machine destroying its chances.

Jobs was recently compared to Thomas edition and I say this is a perfect comparison. Like Edison, Jobs was a fake, and like Tesla, android is better.
