Sounds good, but Gerry`s scepticism is very much justified.

Scuzoid, whether or not AIDS can be cured, condoms are still necessary to avoid contracting STDS and impregnating the girl.

In the end they`ll sell the cure for it for thousands more than it cost to make.

Only if American drug companies get to it first.

Call me a cynic, but (IF IT WORKS; Gerry, I hear you on this one!) most of the people who have AIDS won`t be able to afford this; glaxosmithkliine will buy the patant for it, price the 3rd world out of the market meaning that either millions of people will still die from it, or it`ll cost western governments billions of $/£ that we don`t have.

@ mal BB - thanks for the support, but a vaccine prevents you from getting it. It doesn`t cure it for people with AIDS. I hope they`re on the right track, but like I said, they`ve been "close" for over 20 years. Kind of like how close they are to curing cancer.

If they make a vaccine at cost, then everyone will be immune and it will disappear. However, if they offer an expensive cure, then they can keep a thriving pool of infections among poor countries and the uninsured and keep selling the cure till the patent expires.

This is a vaccine, not a cure. vaccines are usually much less expensive than treatments or cures.

It is also not known just how effective this vaccine will be yet. The recent discovery of a malaria vaccine is only 45% effective over 15 months, which is just an example, sometimes, of how ineffective initial trials of vaccines are.

How do you know that? It might be cheap to produce but research probably took a TREMENDOUS investment. Thus they have "gouge" per se in the short term in order recoup those costs. Once they do though they`ll sell it for cheap.

Say two things that add to these design costs:

1)Designing these medicines takes years of trial and error. Those chemical engineers, biochemists, and pharmacists have to get paid somehow.
2)It`s going to be VERY hard to find other human beings willing to risk becoming HIV+ for in vivo testing.

"If they make a vaccine at cost, then everyone will be immune and it will disappear."

AIDS won`t disappear in this manner (like Polio did) because it crossed the species barrier from Chimps to Humans in the 50`s and/or the 60`s. They`d have to capture every wild Chimp and treat it as well for that to happen.

Well yes, but what proportion of new HIV-positive cases do you think come from infection by chimps these days? I would happily bet it`s far less than 1%.

We might not be able to completely eradicate it, but if we can relegate it to chimp infection it would be effectively a thing of the past.

Plus- Scientists don`t always operate under the law. When they are ready for human testing, they will find someone to test it on; don`t worry about that.

"If they make a vaccine at cost"

They`re in it for profit, so that`s not gonna happen. But even if they did, distribution through Africa isn`t gonna happen. They can`t even get information passed around. They still think the cure is to have sex with a virgin, which has sent the cases of rape through the roof.

    @Everyone -
The article got it wrong it saying that this will lead to a vaccine. The research will lead to a treatment (different from a vaccine), which could hopefully lead to a cure.

Isn`t this how that end of days game got started? They find a cure for some big disease then it begins to kill everyone in the world. Your wife dies and then your kid then ultimately you. What was the name of that game? Still amazing though. Never thought id hear about this in my life time.
