madest, I guess you don`t know this, but videos can be EDITED. That means when they switch from one camera to another, they don`t always start the second shot exactly when the first shot ended. There could have been 10 or 20 minutes between the shot of the guy shooting the dart and the shot of the bear falling out of the tree.

This is also why movies usually take longer that 2 hours to shoot.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with the decision that was made. This is a very sad situation. These animals are carnivores, and frankly, higher in the food chain than us. They have every capability of killing one of us or one of our children. I have to question the sanity of anyone who is willing to risk the life of an innocent human being or child for that matter. In an idealistic world all of these animals would have been tranquilized and placed in a location better suited for them. Sadly, when human life is at stake, this is not always an option.

As mentioned by _kiersten_ the true travesty is the horrible laws and enforcement that allowed this to happen in the first place. But, sometimes hard and difficult decisions must be made.

Just because Jack Hanna says tranquilizer guns don`t work fast doesn`t make it so. I`m disgusted in this guy. He`s supposed to be one of the good guys but he`s a goddamn anti-environmentalist jagoff. He`s not fit for his job. He spews lies to cover his own misdeeds. Here`s a bear getting shot by a traquilizer dart.

I`m sorry but...killing all the animals was really the only way to take care of that situation. There were 50+ wild animals running around a city. Does anyone realize how much time and resources it would take to tranquilize, locate (because they wouldn`t just drop right where you tranquilize them) and then put them in cages AND take them to a secure location? A very long time, which is not something you have, when once again, 50+ wild animals are on the loose.

On another note however, this all could have also been avoided if people weren`t allowed to just keep wild animals in their backyard. Ohio you so crazy.

Only four tranquilizer guns in the whole county?

I know the story. The guy was a jerk. But the Governor of Ohio is just as much a jerk. He had the opportunity to extend the ban of convicted criminals owning exotic animals but let the ban lapse. He did so without having any non lethal weapons on hand. These aren`t just dead animals, many of these are dead endangered species. We have an obligation at the top of the food chain to protect these animals from exactly this type of end and we fail miserably and make excuses for our lapse in judgement. We are these animals worst enemy, yet we are the only ones who can save them. Pitiful.

Madest, what "nonsense" are you referring to? a man set all his animals free and then killed himself, I don`t think anything could have prepared them for that. It also takes a significant amount of time to tranquilize and then cage a large animal, so there`s no way they could have tranquilized and then caged around 50 of these animals, especially since some of them feed around night time. There is a very high chance someone would have gotten killed. You can`t just say the state should have been prepared for something like this already because this is such an outlandish case.

Tranquilizing or otherwise capturing these animals takes time. A LOT more time than just killing it. There were ~50 dangerous animals on the loose. Even if every trooper had 10 dart guns and 1000 darts, they still should have use their firearms to eliminate the issue quickly and safely. If there were only one or two animals it might be a different story but sometimes scale dictates a specific action.

Here`s what people do differently. If you live in a state where your Govorner allows such nonsense have some non lethal weapons at the ready. Just because we can kill any living animal doesn`t mean we always should.

I don`t understand the people on here saying the cops did the wrong thing... What would you people have done differently? waited for a day or two to get more tranquilizer guns and more backup while tigers and lions roam around a populated area? The only thing they could do is kill the animals. It sucks but killing them is better than having them kill people, and all the people that are here complaining about the animals being killed would be here complaining about the people being killed if they didn`t kill the animals.

intrinsic moral value accrues to creatures with a higher cuteness value. You`ll never hear anyone bitch and moan about a chicken or a toad.

I live 20min away from Zanesville.. this "news" is all i`ve been hearing. The cops DID the right thing, madest. They aren`t some rag tag bunch of hilljacks with guns wanting to cap a lion. They had a limited time to act and with their training and professional know-how they acted.. and the outcome was the correct choice. You want to cry about how some 75 animals were treated???.. go visit a poultry or cattle/beef factory and see how 1000`s of animals are being treated right now... IN EVERY STATE! These animals were dead before they even got to Ohio, in a manner of speaking... may places like this hold "hunts" where people from all over the world come to shoot an exotic animal. Animals in places like these aren`t even counted in the "remaining population" for exotic animals so your numbers are ill affected.

sad?.. yes
wrong?.. no

Sad, but they cant waste time thinking of a better way to save them when lives are on the line.

Cops didn`t do the right thing. Many of these animals are endangered. You have a Governor who allowed this to go on and didn`t have tranqilizer guns at the ready? You need to make a phone call to get these items shipped to a state that allows people to have Tigers?!?!? Go ahead and forgive their stupidity it`s exactly what they expect from their not-so-bright citizenry.

So, collegebound, for what community college are you bound? I hope they have a lot of 000-level remedial courses for you.

As to your questions:

No, that`s what the glass is for -- to make it so they`re NOT dangerous. When you let them OUT from behind the glass, THEN they become dangerous.

We kill all the rats we can. We don`t kill bees because they serve a vital function to maintain life on earth (unlike you). People who are allergic carry EpiPens, or they earn themselves a Darwin Award.

We can`t go back in time and retroactively leave everything the drat alone. Since we can`t change history, we have to deal with reality, something you could use a dose of.

Regarding the douche bag who let them out, if you could tear yourself away from your porn and jokes to read the NEWS, you would know he blew his own brains out.

Finally, if you agree with me that the cops did the right thing, why are you being such an annoying little bitch?

"`Killing an animal just because it`s dangerous is simply retarded.`

That explains how human intelligence evolved: retards like you got eaten before they could reproduce."

said animals are dangerous behind the protective glass and bars at zoos...should we just kill those animals? rats can chew through steel pipes and there are people alergic to bees so should we kill those as well? YOU are dangerous as well.

ive got a better idea. leave everything the drat alone. leave it in the wild where you kidnapped it from and let it go about its natural life as best as it can.

its sad that the cops killed those tigers but its not like they knew that they would be let out that day and had tranqs on them...they made the best decision they could and they deserve as less flak as possible from this. find the douche bag who let them out.

pro·jec·tion NOUN:

8b. The attribution of one`s own attitudes, feelings, or desires to someone or something as a naive or unconscious defense against anxiety or guilt.

And I hope you didn`t reproduce for humanity`s sake. But you`re probably gay anyway.." - PierreJeanFR (notorious French liberal homosexual)[/quote]

"B.S. those cops could have sat in the relative comfort and SAFETY of their cars and vans pumping tranq after tranq into the animals with NO loss of life. "

The thing is if you dont know a tranqulizing agent that they use if is to potent or they get to much kills the animal. There are many many factors like weight last time they ate and other things that needed to be know to calculate the rigth dosage. So to do that for 43 animals that you know almost nothing about is quite hard to do.

Also for the six they saved i am pretty sure those 6 were ones that will still in their cages not roaming free.

First I heard of this I came into the room at the end of a news flash.

"4 tranq guns 50 MILES AWAY on each, darkness 45 minutes away."

Imagined exchange: No, that`s ok, Lou. We`ll just wait til morning to catch them. It`s not like many of them are predators that like to hunt at night. Let`s go get donuts.

@lytle_lytle @MrPeabody If you `watch` the vid he says that they had FOUR tranq guns. So much for; "1)Sorry, cops dont carry around tranqs just in case of a random tiger attack".
As for the rest; I saw two dozen animals sitting in a huge empty field with zero neighbors.
Now, I`m not going to quibble over the animal proofing of a cop car however let me just say that I have been in a vehicle at the local land fill that was being savaged by a 400lb black bear. How did I survive? Well, I started the engine and moved it.

4 guns...Lets be real generous and say 30 whole seconds (slow for a trained officer) each to reload, aim and fire. That`s 6 minutes to save 48 animals. Even so, if they`d actually tried, they could have done better than just the 6 they did save.

Ya, because everyone knows wild animals just sit on the side of the road waving to passing cars.

1)Sorry, cops dont carry around tranqs just in case of a random tiger attack

2)A tiger, lion, gorilla, and many other animals can break glass. They are pretty darn strong.

3) Could the other neighbors have sat in their cars also? see point 2.

...except, of course, to the public, but f*** them anyway. Right, antagonizer? After all, you obviously know MUCH more about capturing wild animals than the curator of the top-rated zoo in the entire world. Stupid, liberal dickhole. Yeah, I know you`re a liberal, because only stupid liberals are as arrogant as you are.

It`s amazing that something so dramatic has to happen in order for the state to realize that something has to be done.

"Isn`t the fact that the animals were dangerous a good enough reason to get rid of them?"

No. It`s a reason for the state to not allow the man to have them in the first place. By allowing this man to keep such dangerous animals, the state (not the deputies) is just as much to blame for the deaths of these animals.

Killing an animal just because it`s dangerous is simply retarded.

Imagine if just one child was killed by one of these animals. The complete crapstorm the police would get because of that would be insane. Good job, officers.

I have a tremendous amout of respect for Jack Hanna and if he did not believe what the police had to do was correct, then he would have said so. It was nothing more then picking the least worst answer to a crapy situation.

6 out 0f 48 saved. That is just sad.
Local Authorities not trained or equipped- understandably- for this situation. State authorities in the same boat. Feds lack- thankfully- jurisdiction, and going by recent history would have shown up to help days or weeks late(Katrina), only declare well off neighborhoods disaster areas(Ike), or just shoot family pets, women and children(Ruby Ridge).

What, you think Zanesville, Ohio has enough tranquilizer for 52 large predators just lying around? Do you know how long it takes to capture and secure just ONE animal? Seriously, stop ragging on the cops for doing their jobs, they had a town of PEOPLE to protect. Blame the non-nice individual that let them out.
