"George Carlin was funny long ago, but when he got older, he became just a bitter old man. "

Not exactly.

Modern Man

This was his 13th HBO special, and this is how he decided to open. This is, in no way a man who is bitter and angry.

He had a love of words and a hate of ignorance. His comedy was always "shock" humor, and as the time went on, he found out that the best way to shock an audience was to write material that shocked him.

"Want to piss off a feminist? Call her cum-catcher! That`ll get her attention. Oh, don`t act disgusted! Half of you are gonna go home and go down on each other tonight, remember? If you`re willing to swallow cum....let`s not make believe that something I said was disgusting!"

Capital gains tax should be 15%. Effective tax rate might be lower but I`m not going to individually reduce cap gain on tax credit unless there`s an across the board measure.

I could be wrong about that though.

All figures 2007, because you had to go and pick friggin 3%.. pick a standard bracket next time. :P

Sources: USC, CBO, and the Census Bureau. I had to extrapolate the 3% from the 1% and 5% figures, hence the "about" in those figures.

What`s capital gains tax work out to these days in the states? 9%? No wonder 88 of the top 400 earners didn`t even bother working a day.

Old Ollie.
It`s also not true that they shoulder 50% of the taxes. So you should take issue with that as well.

The top 3% shoulder about 35% of federal tax.
The top 3% earn about 25% of the income.
The top 3% have about 58% of the nation`s wealth.

By comparison the Middle Quint (Average Americans):
Shoulder 10% of Federal Tax.
Earn 14% of the income.
Own 2% of the wealth.

The Middle Quintile owns 2% of all the financial wealth in the US. The bottom 80% of Americans own 7% total.

George Carlin:
He`s wrong when he says the rich "pay no taxes", just like it was wrong in that last thread to claim 47% of America "pay no taxes".

The tax burden on the top 20% wealthy is 6.7 times LOWER than that of the Average American though.

The solution is not to "get over it", but to close tax loopholes and adopt a tax system that`s supported by someone other than the insanely rich and those too stupid to realize how hard the current one screws them.

Because yes, if someone proposes a tax increase on those making over $250,000 a year, and the entire protest movement is made up of people who make less than $40,000 and carrying signs that say "Don`t tax me, bro", those people are, quite simply, stupid.

The rich don`t pay anything because they technically don`t make anything. They buy everything in the name of the companies they own and it all gets tagged as a tax write-off.

There is nothing you can do to make the rich more taxes, simply because they will hire someone to figure out how to get around it. They will, get over it

It is a fact that the tax burden is unevenly shouldered by the middle and lower classes. The rich do not pay a percentage of their income equal to the poor, when they pay anything at all.

I think of all the smart, respected, well educated, historically significant people I can think of, and George Carlin is the one I quote the most.

I always thought it was stupid for people to cry when celebrities die. The morning I heard he died, I cried. Legend.
