I used to run round Broadmoor hospital for the criminally insane with him as a kid.

I`m not joking, by the way; I lived in Crowthorne where the hospital is, and he used to arrange an annual fun run for charity, I ran it a couple of times. What a legend he was, weird bloke but very big-hearted.

@Listy im not surprised that theroux did that. He;s known for it, purely because he thinks it`s going to make him popular. Hell, look at the crap he pulled when he filmed in columbia/american prisons. It was pretty obvious if the cameramen and police hadnt had been there, they would have killed him and not given it a second thought.

Part of my childhood disappeared when I heard the news. They don`t make them like him anymore. A man with that sized heart should live forever. R.I.P. Sir Jimmy.

I saw Louis Theroux`s documentary and didn`t really like it for those reasons; I think he did the same thing the one time he interviewed Michael Jackson. Good to see so many people speaking good of Jimmy Saville though; didn`t think this would get posted.

Very true Ted, perhaps that was his biggest legacy...his endless charity work, which is what he got his knighthood for.

Do you remember the louis theroux documentary about him? He came out today with comments about how Sir Jimmy was `utterly free of showbiz airs`... .yet all Theroux did in that documentary was try and bait him and insinuate things about his motives.

@listy Also remember the extreme amount of charity work he did. Plus the eccentricity he played was purely for show. Behind closed doors he was a very intelligent man who even went as far as to design a hospital for a charity he was campaigning for.

@Robosnitz, I wouldn`t worry bout it, he`d probably never heard of you either. However, here in the UK my generation know him for being the first real celebrity DJ in the 60`s and his famous (here) tv show of the 70`s, and his real association with music up till the 2000`s.

Mind you, he was a real odd drater.

I met him a couple of years ago at Stoke Manderville Hospital. He payed for/commisioned a state of the art spinal unit there. A very generous man.

How sad, a kind, generous man, a true eccentric, with a real heart. He will indeed be missed.

One of the true great entertainers of the UK, as well as a Huge feature for charity, raising over £40 million, as well as running over 200 FULL marathons since he started.. He will be missed. RIP Jimmy.
