    Well the logic is plausible but the facts are wrong. If we`re speaking about this in hypotheticals, since that`s the only way we can, it could be a case of genetic mosaicism or chimerism.

    Interestingly the word RIB means "side". Rib is just a quirk of translation.
    Interestingly men have XY chromosomes. Take one side of that, and you have X only, which is the only chromosome that women have. Cool huh!

    @patchgrabber

    I would say it`s closer to moasicism than chimerism but then we have the problem of the Y chromosome. Assuming we can remove it completely, it would be a homozygous X individual which whouldn`t matter as one should be inactivated anyway. If however the Y chromosome is retained, we`d still in theory need two X chromosomes for reproduction which would make it an XXY individual (Klinefelter`s syndrome) - which would make for a very `butch` Eve

    @beternal: Mosaicism is more likely, but it is possible for intersex conditions in mosaics, although rare. Also, just because one x chromosome is inactivated doesn`t mean it`s useless. It`s not necessarily the same x chromosome silenced in each cell, and some genes on the inactivated chromosome escape inactivation and are expressed.

    But in this instance it would be exactly the same X chromosome - Adam would only have the one and therefore to produce a female, would require a doubling of his single X. So regardless of which were silenced in each cell of Eve, the result would be the same

    @beternal: You`re not interpreting mosaicism properly. Your logic implies that each cell has one X or one Y and that`s it, when in reality that`s only the case with gametes. Intersex in mosaics (i.e. some cells are XY and some are XX) IS possible in rare cases, so if the DNA taken were from XX cells, it wouldn`t just be the one chromosome, although I`m pretty sure that one would have inactivated and all cells from that cell line WOULD have the same inactivation.

    You`re really applying scientific logic to a miracle? =/ If God could create life from a rib template, he could also alter its genetic code significantly as he does so. He can also shoot laser beams from his eyes and fart unicorns if he wants to. This is a ludicrous strip...

    This shows, once again, how atheists try to limit God`s powers within the rules of science, it`s absurd to believe an all-powerful God has to follow any rules laid down by man.

    We didn`t lay down the rules of science. If you want to take a religious viewpoint, then *God* laid down those rules. We just do our best to study and understand them.

    Nooo, I was talking about normal cells, if I implied each cell only has one of each sex chromosomes, you`re right, that is reserved for the gametes but in all other cells there are a pair of sex chromosomes. In a woman it`s XX and in a male it`s XY (obviously you know this)... but in Males while the Y chromosome is effectively a parasite- adding on to and/or silencing the `native` X chromosome so testis for example cam be produced instead of ovaries, in a female, one of the X`s is silenced in each cell.

    So in THIS instance I am saying BOTH X`s were derived from Adam and as he only has one in each cell, the only way she could have two is a duplication of his single X, ignoring the Y.

    When I first saw this, I thought it was clever. Then I realized, the fairy tale claims that Adam was made from dust. Applying the same logic, Adam`s genetic makeup should be that of dust. I don`t understand why the fairy tale requires the magical being to use physical objects to create humans though, considering s/he poofed everything else into existence without such assistance. But fairy tales aren`t really supposed to make sense...

    @patchgrabber pt.2 :)

    Mosaicism are two genotypically different populations of cells within one organism, usually where one accounts for some phenotypic variation. In Eve`s case you could argue mosaicism but in my opinion it would be better described as sibling organ (bone marrow) transplantation. If her `physiology` was built AROUND (go with this word for now) this rib and her cells are XX while this transplanted rib was XY, they would be genotypically different, ruling out mosaicism.

    Scenario B is that as I suggested before, there was a sex chromosome duplication (XXY) - which may result in Klinefelter`s syndrome. PERHAPS there was a Y-silencing event, (go God! - woo!) leading to a healthy female (subsequently lost in future generations).

    Scenario C is that Adam`s X chromosomes were just duplicated and used as the template for Eve. Two IDENTICAL (Adam-derived) X chromosomes.

    @LillianDulci

    We`re just trying to hypothesise scenarios from a genetic viewpoint. If you`re using the dust argument, my view on that would be that `dust` is merely a way of explaining in simple terms to the masses. It is a lot more believable in my eyes to gather `dust` as a metaphor for atoms etc to create an organism than it is to believe a simple *POOF! - here be man!*

    The real kicker to that argument is that he got `dust`
    ... This is GOD!

    Dust: Fine, dry powder consisting of tiny particles of earth or waste matter lying on the ground or on surfaces or carried in the air.

    He has just created the Earth... why is there waste matter or accumulated debris (usually arising from days/ weeks etc of degradation) on his fresh new planet?

    ... I mean seriously, you`ve just made something... if it ain`t looking pristine then, it never will!

    @lillian the intention of saying that adam was made from dust was intended to 1. to give a reason for man to show humility, 2. display gods mastery of creation by making somethign awesome out of somethign that isnt, 3. set the stage for some heavy metaphors that come up later in the bible.

    I have heard before that adam and lilith were actually the first two beings, eve was lilith and adams daughter and `rib` actually refers to adams penis. Just read that not too long ago. Not saying it`s true or anything, but I am saying that it makes as much sense as everything else in that god forsaken book.

    People spend too much time picking apart the literal details of religious stories and ignore the actual important moral lessons. That goes just as much for atheists thinking it`s all about an invisible man in the sky as it does for ignorant Christians saying "science contradicts God" or whatever.

    I`m a Lutheran in a Comparative Religion class, and I don`t even bother arguing with people on the Internet about this stuff anymore.

    Yup, christianity is stupid. Their only cop-out to their whimsical, fantastic fables is that they have the omnipotence of god to explain them, which begs the question of why didn`t he do it in a simpler way, like creating eve out of dust too, instead of having to genetically engineer a rib.
    Or make every wicked person die on the spot, instead of flooding the world, killing all life in the process but a small ark, and then keeping the predators from eating their prey for enough generations to achieve stable population levels, without them starving, etc.
