CAR&DRIVER lined up 11 supercars for a drag race. I think you"ll be surprised who wins.

What a poor test of SOA automotive tech. A one shot drag race, eleven super cars driven by who the heck knows. Anyone else notice the nice delta formation? The center cars ahead and all the "also rans" in the periphery? The Lotus that finished last is likely the car that would win the slalom test. Oh well, these cars are just automotive pornography for most of us anyway. I favor the R8 in general despite.

Here`s an example of the two cars driven by the same driver, who is a professional racing driver.

The track strongly favours the Nissan over the Bugatti, because it`s a slow track with tight corners and short straights, i.e. no chance for the higher speed of the Veyron to be a big factor.

Veyron SS 1:16.8 Nissan GT-R 1:19.7

The Nissan GT-R is an oustanding car and probably the best value for money supercar. You making things up to pretend it`s the best car at everything doesn`t do it any favours. It makes you look silly and it makes people wonder what other claims about it are fictional or exaggerated.

Or how about an early 1970s Datsun 1200 that`s 100% electric and beats a Nissan GT-R over a quarter mile by about 1 second?

Does that mean an early 1970s Datsun 1200 is better than a Nissan GT-R?

Does that mean that a Nissan Leaf is better than a Nissan GT-R?

In case anyone cares, the cars I am referring to are Red Victor 3 and White Zombie. Both road legal. Both modified versions of production cars, which according to jamie76`s argument means that the stock versions are superior to a Nissan GT-R (and everything else).
not to mention, if you put a gt-r and a veyron on a race track the veyron would lose so badly it wouldn`t be worth watching.
Only in your dreams.
the veyron is an over engineered POS
That got a genuine laugh from me.

It`s the best GT car, by a large margin. Ludicrously priced, but it`s by far the best car of its type.

It isn`t a track car.

It isn`t a drag racer.

It`s a grand tourer.

[quote">not sure where you got those numbers. a veyron of any type runs low 10 second 1/4. no veyron has ever broke into the high 9s.[/quote">

So why is it listed as 9.7s? Here, for example

[quote">there is a vid of a 1,000 gt-r spanking a veyron in the 1/4[/quote">

Did you read what I wrote?

[quote">It`s possible to mod a GT-R far enough to beat a stock Veyron Supersport over a quarter mile, but that`s not the same thing. It`s possible to mod a 1970s junkmobile to beat almost anything over a quarter mile.[/quote">

I can link you to a video of a 1972 Vauxhall Victor (a cheap low-end family car 40 years ago) that can do a quarter mile in 7.2s (and they are still working on it). Does that mean a 1972 Vauxhall Victor is far better than any production car?

@Angilion

not sure where you got those numbers. a veyron of any type runs low 10 second 1/4. no veyron has ever broke into the high 9s.

they are about a second faster in the 1/4 but they also havve over 1,000hp.

there is a vid of a 1,000 gt-r spanking a veyron in the 1/4 so bad it was like watching a stock honda run the gt-r. when you even out the hp the gt-r again proves it is the better car.

not to mention, if you put a gt-r and a veyron on a race track the veyron would lose so badly it wouldn`t be worth watching. the veyron is an over engineered POS that gets it butt handed to it by the SCC Aero in top speed (the new SCC topped 270) and gets its butt kicked around a race track by a host of supercars. the veyron is a one trick million dollar ugly pony.

I am not suprised in the least that the GT-R won and not sure why anyone that knows anything about cars would be. I would like to see the GT-2 replace the GT-3 and the Z06 replaced by a ZR-1 but overall I suspect that the GT-R would still win considerinng a ZR-1 euns the 1/4 in about 11.2-11.5 depending on the driver.

the GT-R is the world`s overall best supercar when you consider it cost 80K and will destroy cars that cost all that way up to a million dollars.

oh and for the veyron nuthuggers, the veyron wouldn`t have a prayer against the GT-R on a race track, not even a little one. besides, there are vids on youtube of a 1000hp GT-R beating a veyron like a rented mule. funny what happens to the french POS when the HP is equal.

Fun little race but likely not a real test as far as car vs. car The Nissan seemed to have the first off the line jump and as any car enthusiast knows staging a car for brackets is a matter of milliseconds and the slightest error translates all the way to the finish. Run all eleven cars w/the same driver three times each and see what the results are.

So, I stand by what I said:
EVs have the potential for beating ICEs in a drag race, but not currently on a like for like basis.
Also this:
the top road-legal EV drag racers could be put into production quite easily if there was a market for them.
I was thinking of White Zombie in particular, which is fine for road use (the owner uses it as a road car) and does a quarter mile in 10.2 seconds. It`s reliable and it`s no more expensive to run than a Tesla (battery costs are the main expense, which is why EV advocates ignore them).

20 years from now, EVs might well be genuinely viable. Maybe 10 years from now. Maybe even 5 if there are major breakthroughs in battery technology and massive spending on infrastructure. But not right now and they won`t be much cheaper to run and nowhere has enough spare generating capacity to support a complete switchover anyway.
@Angilion the tesla roadster a 100% elecric car does 12.7 on a quarter mile
How is that relevant to my post? It`s a very expensive roadster with good low-end acceleration. It`s handily beaten by a Lotus Exige S, which is far cheaper, handles far better, has a far higher top speed and beats it over a quarter mile...and that`s before the year`s 33% increase in power the Exige S has recently had.

I would have pegged the lotus as last, seeing its power was half that of some of the other cars. Real world tests with proper driving would differ greatly

Not surprising at all... The GT-R, in my opinion, is the most well rounded sports car you can get for the money. And an argument over the GT-R and the Veyron is stupid. Beyond stupid, actually. You can`t compare a car that costs less than $100,000 to a car that costs $1.7 million.
Would have loved to see what an electric car would do on this track.
You`d have to use a hugely modified or custom-built electric car to get a comparable time. If you used similarly modified ICE cars, they would be much faster.

EVs have the potential for beating ICEs in a drag race, but not currently on a like for like basis. Although that`s not entirely fair because the top road-legal EV drag racers could be put into production quite easily if there was a market for them.
I love the look of a Lotus, even if it lost this drag race.
It`s the wrong Lotus for a drag race, anyway. Besides, Lotus have always been designed for handling, not a quarter mile in a straight line. I don`t know why they put it in here at all.
"you get a Bugatti Veyron Supersport in there and they`re all screwed"

Nissan is still faster in the standing quarter. As is the Atom V8.
Veyron Supersport beats the Nissan GT-R by over a second over a quarter of a mile. It`s possible to mod a GT-R far enough to beat a stock Veyron Supersport over a quarter mile, but that`s not the same thing. It`s possible to mod a 1970s junkmobile to beat almost anything over a quarter mile.

Has anyone actually tested an Atom V8 properly in a quarter mile?

Pop a Radical SR8LM into the mix as well. It`s a production car. Sure, it`s actually a racing car, but it is a production car and it`s road-legal in many places.

I have seen "hypercar" used. As performance increases, you have to either make a new term for previous supercars or a new term for the new high-end handful.

11,2 Sec @ 121,8 MPH
11,3 Sec @ 125,6 MPH

Faster car, slower time? or is it just the top speed?
The Nissan accelerated harder off the line than the Ferrari did, but its acceleration dropped off faster than the Ferrari`s did. The Ferrari would have overtaken it a short distance later.

A simpler example of the same thing makes it easier to explain:

Imagine that you have two cars on a long straight bit of track.

Car A accelerates to 40mph.
Car B accelerates to 60mph.

B is now pulling away from A.

30 seconds later:

A accelerates to 80 mph.
B accelerates to 70 mph.

A is now going faster than B, but will still be behind it for a while because B built up a lead earlier.

Put a line in the right place and B will get there first but A will be going faster when it passes it.

Would have loved to see what an electric car would do on this track.

Although i know this isn`t a serious test, i would have liked it when they measured the cars time from crossing the starting line to the finish line.

Over a quarter mile, not many production cars and you`d be hard pressed to find any at the same price that are comparable. Track-focussed road-legal cars could spank it at the same price, but they wouldn`t be the same kind of car.

Over a longer distance, you could get quite a few. The big edge that the GT-R has over a short distance from a standing start is its launch control, which is superb. Using it used to void the warranty on the transmission, though. I don`t know if it still does. Although it`s still quick off the line without it.

That was unimpressive.

Where is the veyron, with it`s 1200HP? It can do that quarter mile race in 10.2 seconds.

If these 11 are "supercars", then what does that make the veyron?

They need to rerun the race with a European driver in the 911 GT3 RS. One who knows how to drive a manual car. I`m not saying it would win, but it was driven by a granny.

Not surprised. Top Gear did this a while ago. Of course the Nissan is the winner. It`s also the cheapest of all the cars tested.

They didn`t include the Ariel Atom V8 though. It would have torched them all.

Not surprising. I did think the 911 GT3 RS would have held up better. It got a good jump. The Nissan GTR is really fast and 4 wheel drive. Anyone that watches or reads a lot of car and driver/motor trend/ top gear knows the GTR is wicked in the 1/4 mile.

A Mustang off the lot is a "generic ford product."

@404, probably just the time clocked at the finish line.

My assumption is that the race was rigged. Nissan payed the most money in sponsoring the race, so they let that car win.

first car had amazing acceleration but less speed at top end, it took the early lead and held it. the other car was eventually going faster but the first car had enough of a lead that the second couldn`t quite catch up to it before the race ended. make sense?

not shocked by the winner, but upset by the inclusion of 2 different models of Porsche but no Lamborghini. same goes for the appearance of a rather generic Ford product, but no representation from Maserati. i`m sure there`s a handful more significant models that could have been used.
