Link: Why You So Homophobic, National Post? - Canada`s `National Post` ran a full-page anti-gay, anti-transgender advert. It`s a church group, but the paper ran it.

This printing pisses me off, as a Canadian. That said, good for the province this is in(not sure which) because that primary school curriculum on tolerance is great, and good for them for not requiring parental permission.

Do they really teach young kids to question? That seems wrong - if they have questions, fine - answer them truthfully and honestly. I`m completely for teaching tolerance, but are you pushing kids to be something they are not? Be careful, Canada.

    This isn`t anti-gay at all; it`s just anti-transgendered.

You shouldn`t spread misinformation by putting the insane, hate-mongering anti-homosexuals in the same group as people that think that the transgender mindset is metaphysically and philosophically wrong for legitimate reasons.

While I disagree with the message of the ad . . .

Newspapers are businesses. Businesses exist, primarily, to make money. They get a huge chunk of their revenues from advertising. This was a paid advertisement, not an article written by a reporter or even an op/ed; the advert is clearly identified as originating from the `Institute for Canadian Values`. They got PAID for this. Always remember that in commercial media and politics, money talks. And the more money you are willing to spend, the bigger your loudspeaker is. Oh, and by the way, have you heard that the internet is killing newspapers? Any newspaper unwilling to accept desperately needed advertising revenue should just close up shop immediately.

No offense to anyone, but I feel that a child that age should not be learning about this stuff. They are too young to be learning about sex imo.Save it until sex-ed in middle school, when they are mentally mature enough to actually understand it.

You stupid twat, its not left wing propaganda.

Peopl like you seriously piss me off. Its like you completely deny that people can be born with more than one set of parts. Almost like its just possible, or that they CHOSE to be born that way. There is a 3rd sex of people and there is NO HARM in teaching children that there is more than just a man and a woman.

Or you can continue to brainwash your children into believing in a god that rapes humans, kills his own son to "save" people, whatever that means, and floods the world because maybe he didnt like something.

Yeah because that is much healthier.

"This liberal sexual education poo in kindergarten has got to stop. These kids should be learning ABCs and 123s, not left wing sex propaganda."

My brother-in-law is the most well known teacher in his city. He`s a special ed ~5year old - 10year old instructor. He teaches these kids practically nothing of what his associates teach the first year (Or two in the very worse cases). All he teaches these kids that full year is what love means to adults, caring, respect, appreciation, and sharing. In a world with rampant parental neglect, teaching these things in school helps immensely. It helps even more when it`s clear these standards of human interaction apply equally to all peoples be them brown, christian, gay, or germans.

I didn`t read the curriculum. I`m sure it`s far to the left of what it needs to be, but the ABC`s and 123`s just don`t cut it anymore.

@Angilion: It has everything to do with this issue. This poster/petition is for parents who hate that their children are learning about controversial Human Rights/LGBTQ issues. These programs are set up so that kids can learn to become accepting and, in some cases, maybe realize that these issues pertain to them. The parents who are against these programs are against their children treating homosexuals and transgenders as equal.

Yeah because little girls should perfectly understand the wonderful world of gender and sexuality without being confused by society. We need to be honest and tell them all about exactly how sex and gender is supposed to work, because god forbid they get confused. I mean, next we`ll be confusing kids by telling them storks bring us babies.

A "right wing" news paper do what "right wing" papers do, support right wing "wing nuts". Kids don`t really care about this gender stuff, until their hormones start popping and jumping. And usually that to little to late to get them the proper information they need to stay healthy and out of trouble.

"I doubt they actually teach kids to be gay."

Of course they don`t teach kids to be gay. It`s a suggested lesson plan for an anti-homophobia curriculum. Presumably, if canada is anything like the states in terms of public education, it is JUST that, a suggested lesson plan. In the states, particularly in elementary school where text books mostly don`t exist, a suggested lesson plan would mandate this material HAS to be taught, but the manner in which it is taught is up to the discretion of the instructor. This seems like a fairly accurate description considering words like: "Encourage" "Discuss" "Could" "If" are used on the right side where the ultra left wing "anti heterosexual christian" points are made.

This is BS. It`s not taught that blatantly. But even if it was, what`s wrong with educating children about the world? They`ve got to find it out sometime. It`s like parents being outraged that their kids are being taught Sex Ed. It`s for their own good and sexual and emotional development.

"People don`t usually show signs of `confusion` until after middle school anyways."

I find it odd people are focusing on the concept the website is trying to imply. This isn`t a conversion "to the dark side" social project, MOST of this (K-8th/9th or so) would be about teaching tolerance, objectivity, and mutual respect. I`m sure once the students get into the later years of this program, there would be more frequent talks/activities focused around acceptance and personal identity, but ideally by that time the child`s peers won`t mind one way or another what type of person they`re dealing with.

Actually in Ontario the premier (who is up for re-election) has changed the curriculum in such a way that it`s not simply about tolerance and mutual respect. He wants students in grade 2 to be taught about physical differences between sexes and that there are different gender identities. There`s nothing wrong with promoting equality, but this is not an issue for most kids that young. He does in fact want children to be encouraged to question and explore their sexuality before they`ve even hit puberty. Teachers are not allowed to refuse to teach the material and parents are not allowed to choose to remove their children from the classroom. There are actually gay rights activists who oppose the curriculum. It`s one thing to promote equality, it`s another to force concepts onto children who aren`t old enough to understand them.

Also, this ad isn`t anti-gay or anti-transgendered, it`s anti-curriculum. Plus we have this thing in Canada called freedom of speech.

Children are like sponges, they take in everything, they watch you, listen to you and learn from you whether you realize it or not. They also learn from the community, if they are taken to public schools. Unfortunately, our public schools are over-ridden with politically correct B.S. There are too many people trying to tell you how to raise your own f*cking kids. All of this is caused by an an over bearing government.

I am deeply disturbed by that statement, if it holds any weight in the majority opinion of the people. I am a parent who is against teaching this to MY 6 year old. That is not an issue that needs to be taught, or influenced in any form in a public school.

ppl shall olways fight for the right to brainwash kids.
teach them religion from early on, teach them transgender, teach them atheism, teach them consumerism, bombard them with publicity, teach them to die for their country, or to die rebelling against their country, and so on.

brainwashing is most effective when done at an early age. Its easy to make a kid believe that santa is a jolly fat man with superpowers and he exists, teaching that to an adult would be almost impossible.

No matter what belief people have, they will always try and force it on the kids before they develop critical thinking skills and enough selfconfidence to question what adults tell them.

So you`d rather they be confused about their sexuality at a later age? When they`re old enough to get pregnant or STDs?

"There`s nothing wrong with promoting equality, but this is not an issue for most kids that young."

I`m sure the idea is for them to learn equality BEFORE it becomes an issue, not wait for the issue to develop and then try to fix it.

How is that difficult for you to understand?

"it`s another to force concepts onto children who aren`t old enough to understand them."

Of what use is it to teach something to someone who is already able to understand it?

The whole point of education is to take someone who doesn`t understand something and make them understand.

Oh, and if you`re trying to claim at a 6 year old is physically incapable of understanding such concepts, then that`s fine. You can just go ahead and cite your qualifications in child psychology in your next message.

"Aww, poor little girl, getting all confused by being taught the reality of the world and the nature of the people that reside within it!

We should teach her simple lies rather than complicated truths!"

Or we should wait until they`re mature enough to be able to understand what they`re being taught before we teach it to them?

People who think that children, whose ages haven`t reached double figures yet, need to be taught about these subjects are even more demented than the nutjobs who took out this ad.

It is the PARENTS responsibility to teach these things to their children, not the schools(government). All of the people who support teaching anything other than Math, English, History, etc., are nothing but stupid socialist...they are, unfortunately products of social-engineering.

"Or we should wait until they`re mature enough to be able to understand what they`re being taught before we teach it to them?"

And how do you know that they`re not?

Are you incapable of understanding the possibility that this decision might well have been decided upon the basis of expert analysis of child psychology, determining that children of that age can be mature enough to understand the subject?

Or are you just going with the notion that your personal gut instinct of what squicks you personally trumps any and all other evaluation?

@Musuko42: Whether the children are able to understand this subject is irrelevant to the controversial issue which most people here are missing. It doesn`t matter if you are transgender, gay, straight or whatever, the issue is that it is not the place of the schools/government to influence these issues whatsoever. It is the parents responsibility.

    Who said? You?

Why do you single this one subject out to be something left to parents and not, say, geography, or computer science?

Why is it always teaching regarding sex and evolution that makes Americans scream that it should be left to the parents to teach? Hmm...I wonder if it has anything to do with how so many Americans spend their Sunday mornings.

    Hmm...

I`ve been heard of this. I will gladly withdraw my kids from any school that tries to teach them that being homosexual is okay(considering it contradicts my Faith). I completely understand that everyone is entitled to choose whatever sexual lifestyle they want (as long as all parties involved are consenting adults) and that it is never okay to bully or hate someone because of their differences. So why doesn`t the government try to encourage classes that discourage hate of any kind? I don`t see them forcing classes that teach children that it`s a no-no to bully others because of their race or religion. There is still plenty of hate crimes for that going around. I don`t understand why I wouldn`t have the choice to have my child opt out of that particular class considering is has NOTHING to do with their education (Math, English, Science etc,).

Mmm- well, these idiots are entitled to there opinions- but they should not be allowed to pass on ideas to their children. Children need to learn about the wide spectrum of humanity- then they will understand where they sit on thet spectrum, and thet wherever that may be it is normal.

Sex education should begin at the same age as all other education, and learning early on that everyone is different is good. As for this making children confused is just ridiculous. I would argue it stops any confusion!

The majority of you people that defend this based on nothing more than "education" make me fvucking sick. You ignorant shutins are the real problem with this world.

Oh and uh, if you arnt teaching your kids the DANGERS of sex at a young age, then someone else probably is. Its like thinking your grade school child doesnt cuss. Your choice to shelter your child simply makes you ignorant and fearful. Learn to take responsibility for the health of your child and slowly break this education to them.

FFS stop teaching kids that people with both parts (or no parts) are bad people and that its wrong. They exsist, they make your meals, they die in wars, they shock your dying relative back to life. Stop living the lie that there exsists ONLY a man and a woman.

    Sick bigoted sheep.

Yes, I say so because Math, Geography, and Computer Science are subjects based on facts and can be used by the ones who learn it to better fend for themselves in the job market, whereas matters such as the one in this post are based on opinion and are used to influence the mass opinion of the public on non-relevant issues to make room for more unnecessary bureaucratic B.S. from the government to form yet again another agency to dictate how we are supposed to feel (as a whole) on certain issues like these.

I just skimmed through the K-6 curriculum. They are not teaching sex at this early age you morons. They are teaching kids diversity. They are teaching kids to treat people with a little tolerance. Anyone who says they are teaching sex ed to 6 year olds is a liar or just being ignorant, or more than likely was fooled by a picture of a little girl along with scary words - simpletons.

Trolling much markhurst123? Or did you just miss the point all together? It was never about sex specifically. The controversy is the overstepping of boundaries in schools done so by the government(department of education). Your link is an excellent example. When does "Challenging Homophobia and Heterosexism:" come in a six years old`s school day? After nap time and before recess?

It`s so typical that everyone gets up in arms about this. "I should be able to teach my child about what`s right and wrong! I`m obviously better at teaching my children than the people who teach my children for a living! How do these `teachers` know anything about children, despite deal with several hundred of them on a daily basis for 10 years."

For everyone who`s saying that schools should teach respect of all kinds, they sure as hell do! Racism and gender discrimination aren`t tolerated at any public school (in Canada) that I`m aware of.

Every single person who is teaching their child to discriminate in private is echoing the sexism and racism of the past. You may say it`s your right to teach your child to hate someone because they`re different, but 60 years ago, racists were using the same excuse to shove black people away from their drinking water.

Grow up, get real, and realize that there`s no such thing as good discrimination.

"How is teaching children about sex or sexual acts of any kind relative to their general education?"

Because nature will forcefully graft a fully-loaded gun to the groins of your children roughly five years before your country deems them old enough to be allowed to play with it. Nature will also make them really, REALLY want to play with it.

This can cause considerable harm to themselves and those around them.

Therefore, it`s a pretty good idea to teach them how to behave sensibly and safely with it, BEFORE it appears on their body.

Some people are gay. Always have been. The number of gay people never vary much, it`s just the way different societies treat them.

Fooling children into pretending this natural phenomenon does not exist, is a violation. Using children to convey your superstitions towards the government, is an even bigger violation.

We make school curriculum based on nature and science, to prepare children for the world. Mixing it with supersticious fantasies from a book can not be allowed.

When being gay was a crime, some people were still gay. They had to hide, thats all. So, even if you let your child grow up in a "gayness- free" enviroment, some will still follow their emotions. Always had, always will.

This is not about teaching children to question their sexuality. It`s about teaching them about nature and tolerance.

"orientation be damned. someone gonna touch em. focus on protecting them from that."

And it has been shown over and over again that most child molestation cases are done by heterosexuals. When a person rapes a child it is almost always about power and control not sexual attraction. And I call it child rape even if the child initiated initiated things because the adult should know better.
