that doesn`t look like the smart car. Its probably some electric variant, and smaller for personal use.

Look at the wheel on it, way too small for road use.

I don`t know if the car is smart or not, but I know whoever bought the thing must be a bloody idiot.

Looks like the micro car Clarkson tested in London, small enough to drive it around the studio and in the lift but no reverse so he had to ask someone to push him out of the lift.

I don`t know how `smart` it is to buy a car that will instantly turn into a pancake when hit by a big truck.

Usually petrol or diesel. There is an electric version, but it`s very uncommon. The ICEs are so small that the fuel economy is huge - they top 80mpg in Imperial gallons. Something like 65-70mpg in USA gallons.

There are also some modded with bike engines, which are ludicrously overpowered.

They are surprisingly close to being adequate in a moderate crash.

Yeah, that`s the best I can say about their crashworthiness.

They do OK in standard tests, but mass counts in a car-on-car crash. They crashed one with a Mercedes car (not a big truck by any means, but a solidly built car) and the Smart went flying. It actually took off. It also spun round and was generally not a safe place to be. If anyone had been in it, they would have have head and neck injuries. Same force on the merc, of course, but far less effect.

I saw the Smart crash test on Top Gear. The safety cell survived well and its doors would still open and close .. however every human inside would have been homogenised by the impact. That`s what a lack of crumple zones will do to you.
