We used to just fill tennisballs with matchheads/strikers and ride around on bikes throwing them at each other. The key was to bounce the ball off the ground and hit the other person with it while its shooting flames everywhere. Good times, good times.

I remember Black Cats, M-80`s, Cherry Bombs and a few other choice fireworks. But I never played with matches, no wait...

I had the coolest paper airplane book. This was one of the best things in there.

I`m not going to tell how we made ours. Not until the statute of limitations runs out anyway.

This is cool. I`m definitely going to try this later.

I used to make fireballs that you can hold in your hand and that burn for a really long time. You just cut a strip off a cotton shirt. Roll that strip into a ball. Then you get some cotton thread and a needle and stick the threaded needle straight through the ball. Wrap the thread around the ball several times so it`s nice and tight and none of the fabric is sticking out. Cut off the thread attached to the needle so you can pull the needle out and tie the loose ends together. Make sure there are no pieces of fabric or thread sticking out. Then just douse the ball in lighter fluid and light it. You can hold it because the bottom part of the flame doesn`t get too hot, so it won`t burn you as long as you don`t keep it in one spot too long. They also make cool whooshing noises when you throw them.

I never did this as a kid, too complicated.
It was a lot easier to light the cat on fire.

Sidragasum, we used to do that too.... get a long(ish)pieces of rope, then we waited until someone went into a phone box (one of the old red ones that were common at the time) then run up light the ping pong ball smoke bomb open the door and throw it in and then run around the phone box with the rope so the victim couldn`t get out.

another trick was to get loads and loads of fishing line and thread ping pong balls at quite long intervals... then go down the street (terraced houses back then) putting the ping pong balls into people`s letter boxes on either side of the street.... then when a car came past it would hit the fishing line and drag out all the balls as it went past - knocking on the letter boxes so people would all come to their doors at once.

We didn`t do this as kids...but I am going to try it later.

We did make little bangers with matches and tin foil though....you just wrap a little bit of tin foil tightly round the match head, wedge the match in something to hold it almost upright and then use another match to light the matchstick halfway down.... in a few seconds when the flame reaches the foil coated match head it will explode with a little bang and fly off somewhere. (if you`ve done it right)

Do the same with a ping-pong ball and you can make an awesome, probably toxic smoke bomb, lol.
