Why kind of dung are you brits eating?? What the frig. is a pasty??
Anything that`s like a pie but isn`t pie-shaped.

Also, a woman`s genitals.

So you can still eat pasty if you`re on a low-fat diet! :-)
why not just set the date back further if the food is fine?
It`s illegal to change dating on products, for very good health and safety reasons. If people can just change the dates, that`s worse than not having a dating system at all because you`ve got a false one.

Food spoilage can`t always be detected by eye, especially in packaged food. "A person looked at it and decided it looked fine so they could change the date and sell it as fresh" just isn`t good enough.

The current "best before" and "use by" system might work if more people knew what the labels meant.

`A pasty is kind of like a pie. It is some meat and veg wrapped in pastry. It is kind of shaped like a half circle.`

That`s like saying the sun is a big shiny gas ball in the sky. Factually adequate, but it doesn`t convey the full glory of the experience. Eating a good Cornish pasty is like taking a bite out of the bum cheek of a particularly tasty angel.

Sell by and use by are two different things.
Sell by is when a shop can legally sell it until, so they technically ahve a right to be annoyed at the company, but eating food past its sell by date isn`t nessasaraly going to harm you.

When this happens, why do you go to the press? I`d go to back where I bought the "pasty" from and beachslap the owner of the store for selling me this crap.

"The government are planning on getting rid of sell by dates because supermarkets have to throw out literally tons of perfectly fine food because of it."

why not just set the date back further if the food is fine?

But feeding your kid the cheapest 99p meat pasty around is being a good parent?! Ok. Dunno if it`s the same elsewhere but as somebody said earlier the UK generally has both sell by and `use by` dates. Even then you wouldn`t worry with many things. They offered her 5x the sale price which she refused, why spoil the chance of a bigger payout.

As far as I`m aware it is illegal here to sell food past the sell by date. The government are planning on getting rid of sell by dates because supermarkets have to throw out literally tons of perfectly fine food because of it.

Ah, you gotta love local newspapers, madly trying to fill up the pages every week with crap because there`s drat all of any importance going on in their town.

Oh get over it! I`ve lost count of the number of times I`ve eaten something WAY past it`s sell by. If it looks edible, doesn`t smell too shabby, then eat it!! It strengthens your immune system.
I don`t think it`s illegal to sell past the date.
The date is a "sell by" recommendation for freshness but does not mean the food is spoiled if consumed after that time.
You`re right. Date labelling in the UK has been criticised for a lack of clarity. "sell by" isn`t usually used any more anyway, but it`s generally been replaced by "best before", which is clearer in meaning but no more stringent. 3 days after it...tiny woo. Maybe a little bit stale, but probably not even that.

"use by" is the one that means something in the UK. It`s illegal to sell it after that date and you really shouldn`t eat it after that date.

You know, I worked at a thrift store that sold out of date cookies and pastries and bread marked down in price every day. Nobody died.

No surprise calling the kid pasty, or that they take child trafficking like a normal thing, but there is no way lacoste is outdated.

sell by date is for business only. The actual use by date is usually 2 weeks or so after.

Pretty lame that a newspaper would report something so insignificant. Far more lame that a Web site would report on a newspaper reporting on something so insignificant.
