Link: SpongeBob Squarepants Is Making Kids Stupid - A recent study finds that watching SpongeBob Squarepants makes preschoolers slower thinkers. Thoughts, I-A-B?

Correlational. Interesting results. Does not imply what the reporter suggests.

I wonder if there is any similar correlation with the number of potheads I`ve witnessed enjoying this cartoon. It`s like a guilty pleasure with the ones I know.

Saying that `television rots the brain and makes kids stupid` is not a conclusion you can make out of the data.
Second, we`re talking about short-term effects.
Third, it`s not a representative study, but it provides some insight into the negative effects television can have
And finally, so only the fast changing images have these results or is the content also to blame?
As always, more research is needed!

GI Joe turned me into an ultra-patriotic warmonger. 80`s cartoons kicked so much ass.

Well, the study DID have a control group. On the other hand, Nicklodeon had a good defense.

I`m leaning towards Nicklodeon with this; I don`t think the psychologists sufficiently demonstrated causation.

Then again, I`m not a statistician.

Too small a study group, and they didn`t have the kids perform the same or similar task before watching Spongebob. Not reliable, but believable.

It is a short-term effect, so Spongebob doesn`t make kids permanently stupid. Rather, and they say this in the article, it is mentally exhausting because of the sheer amount of visual images the child must process. So, you could say that Spongebob makes kids tired.

lem, exactly what age do you feel the show is intended for? It seems to be right about level with a 3-6 year old to me.

oh, my mistake, they did specify children aged 6+ as the audience. I`m just a little shocked, that is one stupid show, I felt over 6 was too old.

THE KIDS WERE F-O-U-R YEARS OLD!! THAT IS WELL OUTSIDE THE TARGET AUDIENCE RANGE! I personally think that the range is, or ought to be, nine to adult. I love that show! Certainly not as bad as Ren & Stimpy which I loved to watch as a kid, and still love, but the topics and the art, when I see them today, were and are adult.

Sounds like the same effects that the Baby Einstein tapes were shown to have on the attention span... completely unsurprising, especially considering how Nickelodeon themselves said the kids in the study were much younger than the target audience.
