Real bacon is bad for them...but a little bit won`t hurt.
That is a Beggin` Strip dog treat and they really do taste like real bacon!

I think the guy who wrote the title was the only one who didn`t know that wasn`t really bacon. I mean I even knew it was a beggin` strip, and I don`t even have a dog.

Yes, bacon is bad for dogs.
On a sidenote, did you know that bacon is bad for humans too? Dogs arent the only animals that get super fat and die of heart disease when they eat greasy goodness.

In moderation, bacon is just fine. Just like most foods. The occasional treat is good, and only doing it periodically makes it taste that much better. This is the case for dogs as well.

I tried the beggin strips, I mean...how can you, as a bacon loving child, NOT try them? They look like bacon, they smell like bacon...and I had no bacon...so nature took its course and I et it.

I can also tell you that the gravy in gravy train tastes like dirt mixed with water (I think thats called mud).

The comments about how this stuff smells like bacon but doesn`t taste anything like it made me wonder if dogs have much of a sense of taste.

A quick look around implies that their sense of taste is far less acute than a human`s. They`re not physically equipped for it and they don`t seem to pay much attention to it. Smell and taste are connected, so smell is vastly more important than taste to a dog. A dog will probably eat anything too quickly to get much of a taste anyway.

Looks like the dog food and snacks industry knows what they`re doing.

Angilion: I`m not positive, but i think we`ve evlolved to have a sense of taste to keep us from eating rotten or otherwise hazardous food. Lots of things that a dog eats would kill us. Like poo.

Don`t eat rotten things that would hurt us? Speak to any Eskimos, who regularly eat rotted meat, for the health benefits of the bacteria. We`re just wimps out here who eat things far worse than them, when we consider all the packaged and processed and pasteurized garbage we consume.

Nobody can be sure of such things, but it`s definitely plausible. All the more so when combined with the fact that humans are omnivores with a very wide range of edible food, which means that we have need of a wide-ranging way of detecting harmful stuff before swallowing it. No doubt in the past there were very many cases of humans encountering plants they weren`t familiar with and wondering "is that edible?".

Although I think a dog could probably tell potentially dangerous food better than a human can, from smell alone.
