The only point where I agreed with him, is when he said "sex is not an issue in the military, whether you`re heterosexual or homosexual." That is true, but having to hide the fact that you are homosexual, for fear of the repercussions from your superiors, is also wrong! Ron Paul 2012

Like 2 people boo`d. Get over it.

Either way, they were probably booing DADT`s repeal, not him being gay.

Also, Republicans don`t hate gays. Most just hold to the Christian value that it is not the way of life that God intended. That doesn`t mean they hate them, they just don`t agree. Many Republicans would also willingly support civil unions, just not MARRIAGE because that is a religious institution.

Well to be fair, by no means everyone there was booing the soldier, it sounded like only one or two in packed room.

That said I completely disagree with the ones that did.... probably never served a day in their lives themselves yet have the arrogance to try and dictate who does.

A couple of friends on mine in the UK military were gay, one of them got thrown out for it when it was illegal here. Two of the bravest guys I knew...and I`d rather share a patrol with my mates like them that I can trust than any biggot.

A room full of non-nice individuals. What disgusting human beings (yeah they weren`t all booing, but the whole room was cheering for what crap Rick was spewing). As Rick said "sex is not an issue" therefor people shouldn`t have to lie about what they do in the privacy of their own home just to be in the military. The DADT policy was ridiculous because being gay has absolutely nothing to do with the military.

"Any type of sexual activity has no place in the military"
So would you give dishonorable discharges to the women soldiers who get pregnant?

Gay and serving in military does not mean Servicing Military.... as a rule.

I am sick to death of the lie that gays want "special privelage" whenever we ask for the same damn thing everyone else has. Like the right to defend your country, get married, or adopt children.

"So would you give dishonorable discharges to the women soldiers who get pregnant?"

Personally, I`d give a medical discharge to any woman who gets pregnant in the military, PROVIDED she was in an active combat zone or due to be deployed in the near future.

Why? Because pregnant women can`t fight. The option for termination of pregnancy should be given, but if you get pregnant, cannot prove that it was not intentional, and were in complete knowledge of an impending overseas deployment or tour, you should be getting a medical discharge.

Understandable exceptions such as pill/ring/etc malfunction, and rape/assault aside, if you`re a female in active duty, you know you might be deployed, and therefore must be in physical condition to fight at any given time during your terms of service, just like any male soldier.

"just not MARRIAGE because that is a religious institution."

Marriage has never been a religious institution. In fact, during the Dark Ages, marriages were banned from being preformed inside a church due to the indecency incurred: people would frequently rip off pieces of a bridal gown for good luck, and brides were commonly "ravished" moments after vows were spoken.

Marriage has primarily been a legal contract between two parties for social and financial status throughout history. The idea of religious backing or an "union of love" is fairly recent in comparison.

Precisely. If sexual activity shouldn`t be an issue in the military, then a soldier talking about their heterosexual escapades the night prior should be as severely reprimanded as a soldier talking about their homosexual escapades the night prior.

Sadly, before the repeal of DADT, a man could talk about screwing his woman all day, but a man bringing up his boyfriend could risk losing his job.

That`s what the military is, after all: a JOB. It`s no more "special" than any other job. Like any JOB, sex shouldn`t be brought up in the workplace.

If you take his comments literally he says that no one should give any indication of their sexual preference while serving in the military. How many straights will he toss out???

While on a purely hypothetical level, were it was possible to go through life with your sexual preferences hidden for both gays and straights, such a position might have merit. But in the real world keeping your sexual preference hidden places a burden on the person, whether it is a homosexual trying to "stay in the closet" or a straight man trying to prevent others from telling if he is straight or gay.

In the real world the position that Santorum takes here is idiotic.

Not sure what "institution" you mean here. The issue with the republican party is that to get nominated you have to cow tow to a bunch of socially conservative nut cases. On the other hand to get nominated as a democrat you have to cow tow to a bunch of financially liberal nuts. When the first real financially conservative socially liberal party comes along sign me up. Until then I will just have to vote republican in most cases.

Sure, sex shouldn`t matter in the military, he`s right there, but no one should have to hide anything. Should married soldiers be forced to remove their wedding rings? Should soldiers not be allowed to have pictures of their kids on display anywhere? No one thinks twice if a straight man in the military talks about their wife and/or kids, but if a gay man does it then it`s horrible? Too many Republican candidates are just missing the point here.

On a related note, sexuality in the military, for the guys who have been to Balad air base Iraq, the exchange closest to the black camp (as I assume there was more than one exchange) sold condoms. I found this to be brilliant.

    "Special privilege?"

You mean the same "special privilege" that every straight man and woman in the military has had for quite a while to openly talk about their lives outside of the military?

Keeping sexuality out of the military ENTIRELY is one thing, in that case throw them all out for putting up a picture of their girlfriends and husbands and children, etc.

But making a deliberate point to pick on ONE group for that kind of thing is bullsh*t.

It might work in theory, but until you start kicking out straight soldiers for making it obvious, all it is, is a prejudice for you, Mr. Santorum, and you are an assh*le.

No, wait, you`re that "mixture of lube, fecal matter and semen that results from anal sex."

The way I see it, if I`m in a trench, and there are people from another army shooting at me and trying to kill me, and the guy beside me has a gun and is shooting back at the people shooting at me...then I`m not really going to give a sh*t how much dick he sucks, how many roosters he`s had up his ass or whatever. Most of the subtle anti-gay, anti-Muslim and anti-Mexican ("Illegals") statements made by Republican leaders are designed to get votes from a large portion of the South. It`s the Southern Strategy all over again except blacks have been replaced with gays, Muslims and Mexicans. Odd, Democratic leaders don`t spread bigotry and hate to stir up their voters. I wonder why that is? Not saying that there are not racist and bigoted liberals because there are. Just wondering why that is.

Agreed that it was only a few who booed, but a few is still to many.

I think the bigger issue, and I have read a few media outlets make this argument, is that not one of the candidates condemned the crowd. Not one of them stepped up and thanked the soldier for his service either.

This guy is a slack jaw. I hope he`s doing a bad job talking out of his ass. He`s turning this whole thing around. "Sex is not an issue" and "imposing social policies" using it to support reinstating don`t ask don`t tell. Really? The whole point of abolishing Don`t ask don`t tell was so that sexual orientation wouldn`t be an issue. Kicking people out for being gay is a social policy. Kicking people out for being gay is worrying about sex. People aren`t allowed to have sex in the military anyways so what the drat is this guy smoking? All he`s doing is trying to put a law back in effect that will kick needed soldiers out of the military because when they were on their two weeks of leave another soldier saw him holding hands with another guy when he wasn`t even in uniform or near any military installations. This guy is retarded as all hell.

My only question regarding open homosexuality and women in combat:

Does it improve the effectiveness of the military, or lessen it?

That`s the only question that matters. I wouldn`t care if they _only_ allowed transgendered asians with 3 arms, if they were the absolute best at killing people and destroying things.

    Wow...ok...

First and foremost, what are you categorizing as Republican in your statement? Technically, I am republican but my beliefs reside in libertarian ideals rather than conservative and I have no problem with gays in the military. What this asshat doesn`t get is that DADT applied to only one specific group. If a soldier talked about the chicks he banged, he wasn`t likely to get kicked out of the army for it. If a soldier talked about what dudes he banged, it was a whole different story. If you serve our country, I don`t care what gender your spouse is.

So...yeah, define the republicans hate gays portion. Just cause a bunch of red-neck (*cough*inthecloset*cough*) boys hate them doesn`t mean the rest do.

Not in the military. If someone talks about being gay, and it offends a straight person, they can ask the gay person, respectfully, to abstain from talking about it.

If a straight person talking about straight sex offends a gay person, the gay person should, respectfully, ask the straight person to refrain from talking about it.

davidildo123, your comment is steeping in Opinion Media talking points. Now who`s generalizing. You do realize that pointing out racism is not the same thing as spouting racism? And you are delusional if you think there is not racism in the Tea Party. It is the perfect cover for racist conservatives that are livid that their president is black. I bet over 50% of the people who claim they are part of the Tea Party joined for this reason.

Is it sad I don`t find this at all surprising, considering the cheering for letting someone without health insurance die? I`ve become so numb to the republican party`s antics that it barely fazes me anymore. YAY for Texas killing lots of people, at least one of which is actually presumed innocent. YAY for taking away women`s rights. YAY for gay bashing, racism, and bigotry. YAY for asking for the *BIRTH CERTIFICATE* of our president(if you don`t think that`s racist, I don`t know what is). YAY for taxing those with no income. YAY for no taxes on the wealthy. YAY for saying that *teachers* make too MUCH money.
Seriously, anyone that votes for a republican next election is a complete moron.

If a straight man or woman mentioned their spouse/significant other... nothing happened.

If a gay man or woman mentioned their spouse/significant other... they were possibly discharged.

"If so, why not just have co-ed showers?"

Gay men/women almost certainly share showers with straight men/women now that DADT has been repealed. In most scenarios showers are communal, but not open, so you`re not stare at other boobs and penis` anyway. The few that are open are generally due to space, such as at boot camp, where straight people won`t get separate showers no matter what because they`re in boot camp.

As to why Co-ed showers will almost certainly never exist. Trust. Women still aren`t allowed onto US submarines for a reason. Commanding officers and the US government simply do not trust 225 lb 7% body fat roid juiced men to NOT rape the women they work with.

Generally speaking, the military doesn`t trust men to keep their dicks in their pants, which becomes a problem when their dicks lead to combat readiness impairing afflictions such as syphilis or pregnancy. Which is why I found it brilliant condoms could be bought why I was in Iraq. They KNEW we were having sex over there, just so long as we didn`t get any of the mission critical women pregnant, "fine" by them.

But "forcing" co-ed showers is far different from "forcing" co-sexuality showers. Male on male rape just doesn`t happen in the military. Male on female is still a common enough occurrence. Anything to avoid it from happening further is in the best interest of the military.

I think the fear of homosexuality comes from insecurities in their own sexuality. I mean, look at who the staunchest anti-homosexuality people are, the ones that get found in an airport bathroom giving bj`s. They think that "teaching" homosexuality will cause their kids to be gay, and the only way they could feel that way is that they don`t feel 100% straight. So they`re uncomfortable.
I don`t know about you, but I knew about lesbianism growing up, and even if I watched lesbian porn, I will not suddenly want to make out with chicks. Sexuality doesn`t work that way, no matter how much you fear that it does.
`Course, they also think that having a transexual on dancing with the stars will make their kids transexual, so sanity isn`t exactly their strong point.

Scuzoid: "Generally speaking, the military doesn`t trust men to keep their dicks in their pants..."

So how is that going to work? Honestly, besides the stress of training, actual combat, death of friends...is this a good idea to add the ADDITIONAL stress of open homosexuality?

Further, I don`t understand the difference between the danger of heterosexual rape and homosexual rape. Considering what rape is, it`s purpose...I don`t buy that co-ed showering/bathrooms would increase the risk.

Frankly, they should just build 4 types of bathrooms. Ridiculous? Yep. But the policy is ridiculous.

"So how is that going to work?"

I clearly spoke out of turn stating male rape doesn`t happen. I never knew anyone who heard anything of the like, so I just figured as was exceptionally rare.

That said, the showers ARE where this`ll generally happen. Co-ed showers are just a horrible idea, far moreso than co-sexuality showers. Heterosexual males are the predominate rapist. I myself just don`t feel comfortable allowing some 23 year old juice head or small pecker misogynist showering with a woman half his size. I don`t know. I can`t really emulate the thought process of a rapist, so I can`t say whether knowing the guy next to you is gay is really that big a deal.

I suppose I can see the use of sexuality separated showers.

As an enlisted male, I had a successful relationship with both a female officer, and then a couple years later, a female subordinate. The first relationship was perfectly acceptable in my mind to this day. She was very mature about it and even though she was a direct supervisor of mine, we both maintained a professional work place.

The second one though.... yeah. I don`t trust men and their peckers because I know full well when I had the opportunity to be the mature professional in the relationship, I decided not to and was hardly discreet with my activities.

I have many friends in the marines and army (I live in Louisiana); I have read bunches of comments of people against revoking the DADT policy.

The ONLY people who have a problem with it? Is the people who aren`t serving in the armed forces. This is just another way for the right winged idiots to shove their bible down our throats in the form of political emancipation of rights.

"Male on male rape just doesn`t happen in the military. But it does."

If you actually read the article you posted nettech98 you would see the male on male rapes are usually done by heterosexuals. This is from the article:

"While many might assume the perpetrators of such assaults are closeted gay soldiers, military experts and outside researchers say assailants usually are heterosexual. Like in prisons and other predominantly male environments, male-on-male assault in the military, experts say, is motivated not by homosexuality, but power, intimidation, and domination. Assault victims, both male and female, are typically young and low-ranking; they are targeted for their vulnerability. Often, in male-on-male cases, assailants go after those they assume are gay, even if they are not. "

He didn`t imply otherwise. It was just a response to my assertion there is no real drawback to straight and gay men showering together. In reality however, particularly in the gay comes out in boot camp or during MOS training after boot camp (The period in time where the bonds are weakest amongst soldiers) I can easily see multiple anti-gay gang rapes (and quite possibly "gang" brawls) by heterosexual males taking place in military communal showers in the next couple of years.

Well, in my book, a bloke that sticks his willy in another bloke, is most certainly NOT hetero!!! Power?...yeah,oooookay.
It`s about the queerest thing a guy can do to another guy. I think this speaker spoke common sense. With respect to gay folk, I think we`ve pandered to them for too long, now. I say put up or shut up. What the hell is a gay person doing in the military anyway? I thought they were supposed to be more sensitive, and here they are, taking on a career, that is, ostensibly, a licence to kill.

Dude, way to be stereotypical. A gay guy isn`t necessarily more sensitive than a straight guy. They just want to nail other dudes instead of chicks. They can be just as stupidly macho, they do still have that Y chromosome that makes you guys do what you guys do. They`re still men.

Saying that the rapists are heterosexual is usually true. Just like rape of elderly women is not because granny`s a hottie, but for power, rape of anyone can be for power.
Then there is the fact that there are more straight men than gay men in the world, and you come up with the fact that the raping is not always a gay guy. Hell, in the animal kingdom rape is OFTEN used for dominance. It shows that they are stronger, and in the rapist`s mind, better. Rape doesn`t come from affection or attraction, it comes from dominance.

@Iderlee The issue isn`t quite what you think.

In the days of Don`t Ask Don`t Tell (and before then, when matters were worse), if a soldier was caught with gay pornography, or if it was discovered that back home he had a same-sex partner - he would automatically LOSE HIS JOB.

What other business can claim that? If a guy working at Wal-Mart marries his male roommate, he won`t get fired. If a Congressman comes out of the closet (it has happened before), he won`t be kicked out of office the next day.

What this assmuncher in the video doesn`t understand is that it`s not about "sex in the military". (He seems to believe that every man in uniform will be too busy having sex with each other to do their duty? Dumbass.) It`s about freedom for ALL persons on the job, no matter what they do in bed at home. The man who sent in the question should be able to receive letters from his boyfriend without fear of being fired. THAT`S the issue.
