Plus-Size Nancy Upton Enters Model Search [Pic]

Submitted by: fancylad 5 years ago

This is Nancy Upton from Dallas, Texas. When Upton heard about American Apparel"s search for a plus-size model to promote its new XL clothing line (a contest the company is calling "The Next Big Thing"), she decided to submit her application. Not as a chance to ignite a modeling career, but to out American Apparel for what she thinks is segregating larger women from thinner women.

"I dont believe that beauty should be qualified as BECAUSE of someones size or IN SPITE of someones size. Beauty is beauty, its fluid, its objective and it doesnt need to be justified to or by anyone," she writes on her blog. You"ll find lots more photos of her there.

The funny thing is, Upton is currently in first place (out of 991 submissions) in the Next Big Thing contest (which looks like it"s going to be reader chosen). Go vote for her and let"s see how this thing turns out.

Good luck, Nancy.

PS: I"d hit it in a non-chauvistic way.

American Apparel is holding a search for its next model, a plus-size model. Upton is entering out of protest. Her story:

This is stupid. She`s arguing that modelling is art and that bigger can be better and all that crap. Fact of the matter is, no. Modelling isn`t art, it`s marketing. A fashion douche/guru makes a piece of clothing using specifications so the clothes fit the model. How big must the model be? Exactly the sizes that sell the best when put on an ad. Tall, thin, pretty and whatever else helps sell their crap.

It`s ludicrous for her to expect to be a model if she isn`t the right proportions. If you can`t make yourself fit in the clothes you`re going to be modelling, then the problem is with you, not the agency.

@Haveheart Sweetie, you don`t know if she`s unhealthy. What she is, is a far more realistic representation of the vast majority of women.

I get the gist of what you are saying, and I don`t necessarily disagree. We should promote a healthy example for people to emulate. Problem is, that just as beauty is subjective and diverse, so is health, more or less. BMI are so incorrect, and what a healthy person looks like is, well, just as subjective and diverse.

We should be lauding the fact that in magazines, and television, a far more realistic and attainable standard of beauty is being portrayed for the young ones growing up, who have a much harder time developing a sense of self worth than previous generations had.

P.S. I for one think she`s gorgeous. Even more so for being comfortable in her body

i don`t think anorexic should be put on a pedestal either. but everyone`s like "omfg those models shouldn`t be that skinny, lets yell at them and then bring OTHER unhealthy people into the fashion world! that makes sense!"
i think models should be "normal" sizes, not too skinny or too fat. we`re killing fire with fire. i don`t know why we all yell at an anorexic model but then we put someone else unhealthy but on the other side of the spectrum and everyone cheers.

poo she`s hot. Like, perfect. I don`t understand how anyone could not want to drat that.

Also, models are so skinny because they literally want the clothes to drape over them. They are displaying clothes. Think mannequin or coat rack. Plus size models are the same. She probably doesn`t wear plus size clothes. Don`t believe me? Go into lane bryant.

also I guess for the hell of it, I`m fairly healthy (okay, not really; I smoke a lot weed) but I walk almost everywhere and sometimes this means miles and miles a day. I`m just naturally a size 6-8. If you don`t like that I`m not a twig, you don`t have to drat me.

When I wrote "She`s a bit off healthy unless she does more cardio-vascular exercise than you`d expect.", I did not mean that anyone who`s a bit fat is sickly. That`s not the same thing. It`s not even similar.

Lol, get it? It`s her cherry pie.

Also: You have to divide your models by size because different sized clothes fit different people. A little twig can`t model the same outfit as a bigger gal.

Less idealism, more pragmatism.

"wtf obviously a fat chick cant fit in a size 0. and not every store can afford to have EVERY size, so they`re gonna have to be segregated a little bit. lose some weight, its not cute. i dont know why we`re putting unhealthy on a pedestal."

A size 0 isn`t healthy if you have to continuously alter your eating habits and exercise to do so.

I`m naturally an 8. I work out, I jog, swim, bike, run.. and I don`t eat very much. This is just my "size." I`ve been an 8 since freshman year of high school, 5`8", 140 lbs., and it hasn`t varied much since then.

Some people are a little bigger, some a little smaller. Sure, if you can`t run down the street without gasping for breath, you`re unhealthy, but plenty of skinny people can`t do that either.

@haveheart, the irony, you have no drating heart

beauty is subjective, just cause you think every girl has to be a skinny bitch like you to look cute doesnt mean everyone does, your personality alone would turn off countless guys, how about you gain some weight and get drating jolly

@ haveheart, you`re forgetting that being too thin is also unhealthy. someone 5`11`` and a size 0 isn`t necessarily healthy... but sure - being a huge size isn`t going to be good for you. being a size 12,14,16,18+ doesn`t mean you are unhealthy and a lot of fashion lines target smaller sizes and frames.

Angilion: she may not be a perfect model of fitness. She may not be able to run a mile or carry 50 pound boxes. But she`s not dying of high cholesterol or blood sugar either. It`s possible to be a little fat and not be sickly. She`s healthy enough, she`s just not fit or in good shape.
"to out American Apparel for what she thinks is segregating larger women from thinner women"
This is such a stupid Chick Thing to do.

Women complain the beauty industry puts unrealistic standards and expectations on them to be thin and pretty. Then when they get a product line that caters to larger size gals they complain it`s segregating thin/larger women.

And women can`t understand why they drive men crazy?
So glad I`m gay.

@Angillion "Off on a tangent, does anyone know why the obscure and inaccurate way of measuring women`s clothing sizes is different in the USA and the UK?"

It`s because when a woman see`s she fits into a smaller size she`s more likely to buy because of the rush of self esteem. That`s why sizes keep getting bigger.

Off on a tangent, does anyone know why the obscure and inaccurate way of measuring women`s clothing sizes is different in the USA and the UK? She`d be size 16 here, maybe 18. Definitely not 12. Although it would depend on what manufacturer she bought her clothes from, of course, since the scale is inaccurate.

When modelling clothes for a commercial clothing company, size is genuinely relevant.

I think she probably meant to say that beauty is subjective rather than objective. I doubt if she intended to argue that beauty is completely independent of the observer, that every person appears identically beautiful to every person. She probably meant the opposite.

Neither is completely true, but it`s certainly a lot more subjective than objective.

Which is irrelevant to the issue of selling clothes, since whether your clothes fit you or not is a different thing entirely.

I`d hire her to model clothes. She`s pretty, lively and confident (and shows that in body language). She`s likely to be the best person for the job she doesn`t want.
